Great performance by Hahn and great conducting by Putin. edit: In all seriousness though, I think that Hilary Hahn interprets Brahms the best. Beyond her phenomenal technical skill to master this tough concerto, she plays with a natural "heaviness" in her bow and vibrato that perfectly suits the richness of Brahms.

@xbqchm
@xbqchm 8 лет назад
I don't like her dancing and her gestures towards the orchestra (they are totally useless), but I normally don't look at the video, only listen to the music. I like her playing very much, altough this very Brahms performance of hers sounds a bit too "disciplined" to me. I look for more heaviness and fire and all kinds of drama. But this is still an excellent performance.
@1Aldreth
@1Aldreth 7 лет назад
this whole movement thing while playing is not something musicians do for show. most of the movement comes from feeling the music and is quite substancial for expressing rythm and dynamics. it is really hard to play energetic pieces without moving. in addition when playing with an orchestra as a soloist movement becomes the way of communicating with the conductor.
@polarbear9968
@polarbear9968 7 лет назад

@jonathangriffith4227
@jonathangriffith4227 7 лет назад
+xbqchm That's the thing about Brahms, there is no room for interpretation. Brahms was a extreme perfectionist, meaning that with any of his work, how it's written is how it's suppose to be played. The fact that you think she is too "disciplined" remarks quite a bit on her skill

@TiqueO6

Yes! Hillary is often not shy about leading the music, the orchestra, in tempo or feeling to where she feels it should be going. I wonder if she has an agreement with the conductor ahead of time about these kind of things, I have a feeling that she does and that the conductor has a responsibility to know the tendencies of the soloists. Her sense of interplay with the orchestra is so excellent and rare to see that I hope that people are noticing that as well because it is a true collaboration and sharing of inspiration in the moment that we are witnessing in the moment. The first time I saw her perform there were two things that stood out that don't always show on videos, that she moves her body with the music from the feet up is if she is slightly dancing, also that she turns and listens to different sections of the orchestra intently when she is not playing shows that she is also listening that intently when she is playing and that you can see and hear that connection very vividly is also apparent.
@schm4704
@schm4704 4 года назад
@@TiqueO6 I agree about the moving, or "dancing"- to me it seems that in the more intense passages, she gets her tone almost out of her legs, like a javelin thrower or something of that nature. I don't play the violin, but it sure looks lime a full-body exercise.

Such a lovely performance. Hilary Hahn is a super star and I do appreciate the fantastic violin music she creates in this performance. Brahms is smiling down from heaven at Hilary who truly mastered the piece and interpreted it with the fidelity that Brahms would admire. Hilary’s point must be that Joachim’s cadenza is so familiar to listeners that it is sometimes rushed by soloists wishing to show off. Here she just allows it to breathe (and show why it is still beloved beyond the notion that it is the first one for this concerto).

The fact that Brahms initially planned four movements for the Concerto reveals that he had in mind a kind of Symphony with solo Violin. Only gradually matured his decision to replace the two middle movements with an Adagio. The premiere occurred on January 1°, 1879, at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig, with violinist Joseph Joachim as soloist and Brahms at the pulpit. (WDR 2022)

My dad plays in this orchestra and his girlfriend is playing violin in this performance and they practice to perfection and the orchestra expects each member to maintain an incredibly high standard. That is how such an incredible performance such as this one comes about and the work that goes into it should not be taken for granted. I was lucky enough to see Hilary perform with them many many years ago and it's impossible to describe the force of her performance. She demands your attention.
