Harry has said numerous times he's been practicing rapping since he was 12, he's in his early 30s now, so close to 20 years of this. If you go back even 3 or 4 years on his channel you can see he has some rough edges. So, I think he's still getting sharper. His ability to expand on the topic given to him has gotten pretty incredible. He won't just rhyme the word "dinosaur" with something, he'll name specific dinosaurs and relate characteristics of them into rhymes. And then effortlessly bring it into a topic about wormholes.
@JokerInk-CustomBuilds
@JokerInk-CustomBuilds 2 года назад
he has been freestyling for fun since 12 yrs old... but he also said that the past 5-6 yrs he has been treating freestyling like work: Spending hrs and hrs practising daily. and when he practice he breaks freestyling up into skilsets like cadence, flow, rhymin, double rhymes, tripple rhymes, double speed, tripple speed, schemes etc... and then he will practice each thing seperately. ex. when practicing rhymes he just focus on rhyme and not flow or cadence. or if he practice flow he doesn't focus on schemes or rhyme... when he masters each part he wil move on and work on combining them all... So he is prolly the first dude in the world to approach freestyling like it was an olympic dicipline. He went pro in a sea of amateurs! and then he has some uncanny talent to back it all up, but I think his university degree in jazz drumming is prolly what tought him to approach freestyling in this way!

When it comes to freestyling, you usually have a glossary of words in your brain that rhyme together. That's the easy way to do it. Harry is just on a completely different level. He sets up his rhymes and flow 10 steps ahead almost instantaneously. It also helps that he's a Jazz drummer which is a huge factor in why his flow is so clean and seamless. I work with musicians every day and have been a hip hop fan most of my adult life and i can confidently say that no one is even close to Harry. The man is an enigma.
@Funkytrip73
@Funkytrip73 2 года назад
he doesn't sets it up 10 steps ahead, just like all good freestyle rappers he rhymes in the moment. He knows he wants to end with AAA, so in that moment he comes up with another AAA, and if he has multiple bars to go, he thinks of another AAA. But it's all right in the moment. He doesnt come up with 10 AAA's instantly. It just flows. 1 by 1 by 1. You can see it clearly when he goes into double or triple time. He starts with something on-topic, then double or triple times all fillers (coming naturally due to muscle memory but generally little to do with the topic) then ends up with the AAA on topic again.

There are exceptions of course, but when he does it consistently, I will be the first to go wow. Neurogal creates another winner. Thanks for opening up this fascinating topic. I'm really curious about the link between gesturing, body rhythm, and speech. My grandson enjoys it much and freestyles. He's twelve and on the asd spectrum. He always uses his hands and body, walks around while he does it, says crazy things that rhyme and, like Harry, make some sense. Thanks for mapping out the neuroanatomy. And, thanks for mentioning morning pages. I appreciate you and your channel.

I'm super happy that the algorithm put this video in my radar. It's super dope to see a reaction to Harry Mack from this perspective. What's even more amazing about him, is that he IS able to reconnect with his conscious decision making on the fly. He sometimes makes tiny mistakes, or changes his mind within a rhyme, and is able to switch to a new direction or decision almost instantly. You should definitely check out his "rap god" freestyle, where he raps super fast while reading and reacting. It's insane.

Would have loved to see your first reaction/introduction to Harry Mack! That must have been something to see! The man isnt just a rapper, he’s an artist, an intellect and an educator (his mom was a teacher) Edit: sorry, i got mixed up since your intro, you seemed to already know Harry Mack. I would definitely recommend you to finish reacting to the whole video and not just the first freestyle. What’s interesting about Harry Mack’s freestyle is that it’s not just limited to the same style of freestyling (ie limited to object/visual recognition, not just singular word scheming), he’s able to story-tell using his imagination, create hooks/chorus’ on the spot and remember the rhyme scheme, open up deep about societal situations like substance abuse, citizenship, depression, etc all the while freestyling, changing his cadences, his tempos, inflections and emotion into his music. The man is something else…

That was a great fresh perspective - I have always wondered how he is able to do what he does - you may not know this but he is an accomplished jazz drummer and you see it when his arms and hands are moving to keep him on beat and flow. What really boggles my mind is how he sets us stanzas to breaks in the beat and has a natural drummers gift in anticipating changes in beats/breakdowns and uses his arms and fingers to help guide the words that flow of him. A unique unmatched talent and seems to be a humble great guy as well. I’ve been watching him for years and he continues to improve - he is way past 10,000 hours that Gladwell speaks about. Thanks for the reaction. Please do more. Maybe some Sacks type analysis on what he does ;)

Thank you, Anna, you literally just explained how freestyling and rap have gotten me through a dark traumatic life. I've been in and out of psychiatric wards for a long time and many asked if I was hopeless then why am I still here. But honestly, it's hard to explain, even PTSD and other diagnosed conditions just disappear when I get up on the mic. While only temporary, It has proved stronger than any medication and therapy to date. While I still carry many scars, rap keeps me moving forward, and shout out to Harry Mack, dude is from an entirely different dimension. I understand how he does it but the speed and level of skill to do what he does is on another level.

Harry's level of skill is due to him putting in that famous 10k hours of practice, and more. And doing it methodically, I think that is the most important part. He studied violin for sime time and jazz drums for a lot of years, and he talked about how he took methods from music school and made practice methods for himself to train himself in freestyle. So he does an exercise to improve a specific skill (eg just making a rhyming couplet, or just making a setup), then he trains another specific skill building on some previous one (having the second part of a couplet be a sentence that makes sense with the punch word, then practicing to make the setup part of the couplet a sensical sentance with the setup word; or practicing just some cadence and switches, etc). He does a specific task, and practices that a bunch, doesnt allow himself to hide mistakes by going into another skill, he just hammer in that one skill, makes mistakes, hones the skill. Then he does freestyle and uses the skill but as soon he cant keep it up he can freely improvise by using another skill, switching the flow, going into a different rhyming pattern etc, so it all flows well, without a hickup. But when he returns to practicing he just does one skill at a time. And he has been doing for over a decade. Maybe some people would think it takes away the magic, but I find it fascinating, he invented a professional-level method of practicing for himself, and used it to reach incredible levels of skill, never before seen in freestyle.

This was short, yet the most informative, motivational video I watched in 2022, thank you so much Dr for this analysis, it's actually funny, as one of the best ideas from life, were immediately when I wake up, even better, is when something happens the previous day, and I just assess it more accurately when I wake up the next day. I kept getting blown away because some of the things you explained made perfect sense with stuff that Harry has mentioned in his videos and interviews. He's talked about not being judgemental with the ideas that come up in his head and letting free, instead of worrying if the bar/line is good enough, appropriate, etc. He's also incredibly positive and has often talked about self-love in his raps, and he's also mentioned his daily habit of writing pages in the morning! I love when people point out that Harry Mack worked hard and EARNED this skill instead of minimizing his focus, discipline, and hard work by talking like it was a special gift he was born with. Harry is amazing at what he does but the main difference between him and everybody else is that he fully committed to developing this skill and has been drilling it with consistent, highly targeted practice for over two decades. Nobody can do this on this level except for Harry Mack because nobody has committed and practiced on this level except for Harry Mack. That being said, though, I wouldn't be surprised to see a number of kids who've been inspired by Harry grow up and become as good (or even better?) in the future. It's like how people used to think running a 4 minute mile was a physical impossibility until Roger Bannister beat it in 1954. Now, there are high school kids running sub-4 minute miles. Sometimes it just takes a dedicated individual to show people what's possible and thereby inspire others to put in the work to reach the same heights and beyond.

Would also need an explanation to how he even can keep the words he's been given in mind the whole time while rapping thousands of other words, even I as a listener forgets the words and I don't do shit. He can be given 8 words and he goes through them in correct order and everything. Harry's brain is amazing.
