Brain Power + Horsepower: Testing The NEW Variable Hardness Coating

Total Seal Piston Rings

Dr. Peter Lee from Southwest Research Institute teams up with "Dyno" Don MacAskill and Lake Speed Jr. to put a new piston ring coating. Soft on the outside for a quick and gentle break-in, but it gets progressively harder as it wears in - a variable hardness coating.
In this video, we took some rings with this new coating and put them on the dyno to see what happens during the critical break-in phase.
For the dyno break-in process, follow this link: • Don't RUIN Your Engine...

Its so comforting that so much development continues for ICE technology. The fact that too many hobbiest engine builders are still using iron rings and performance piston manufacturers still offer shelf pistons with 70 year old ring groove technology is part of the problem.

A quality bore job was always my biggest concern when building a motor ! You can buy the best piston and rings and setup ! You’re left with the bore as being your weakest link in blow by !

It’s is awesome that Mr Shaver shares his team to provide open knowledge gathering with the rest of us mere mortals. Giving so much back to us all with Dyno Don and Lake Speed❤❤❤. We get to learn and test engines and components for free and help all of us “Do better, Be Better”

This has got to be a great thing. Don is one great guy. This man has seen a lot. And knows even more. Thanks for the videos.

Thanks as always 😎. It seems as though the softer initial wear coating could reduce the Rv number (clog it?). I did see that you rechecked. Looking forward to the rest of the test!

analog blowby meter should have neodymium magnet as a ball. and backplate should be made from thick copper plate. (with grove for tube). that will behave like manometer filled with oil/glycerin.

The factory said change my oil at 500 miles, 2019 ZO6. Now for the C8 they say 7500 miles 1st change. I think this is wrong!

Thank you for sharing. Us engine nerds are a weird bunch that get exited over this stuff:). Can you tell us what vacuum the dyno mule pulls at the 80ftlbs, 3k rpm so I can get an idea of what that load is?

Don is not a Shaver although he's been there over 30 years, the owner is Ron Shaver but he's not the live recording type so Don gets the honor.

Would think the next step / extension of this analysis, would be integrating individual cylinder combustion analysis, to identify any other potential variables.

I'm getting ideas for the bottom end rebuild of my engine. Wondering if this coating turns out to be a good long lasting thing and if it may have any applications on top end parts?

Generally you would want to coat something in copper, before you coat it in something else if doing dual layer stuff.

If you bond a lubricant to the rings and bore you can drop the friction dramatically while reducing wear and improving compression. This approach would work on any engine and would not require replacing the rings. Even your improved rings would benefit from this approach as it's synergistic. 🙂
@MichaelCzajka
@MichaelCzajka 14 дней назад
There is only one lubricant that forms a permanent bond with the metal and requires a single application: XcelPlus The highest friction part of the engine is the interface between the piston and bore. You can treat both via the oil and via the fuel. The Combustion Chamber Treatment (applied via the fuel) is the one with the greatest potential to reduce friction in this critical area.

The guy in the hat keeps butting-in and talking over the professionals like he has something to do with what's being tested here. The reality is, he is just being used because he is providing engine dyno time for their convenience. He doesn't have a skin in this game, and is just there for slave labour, so to speak. So stop jumping in and talking over the technicians, and just pull that string when you are told to.
