Here's the story behind one of Cyberpunk's most addictive and useful forms of technology.
What if you could relive moments of someone else's life? Imagine you could see what they see, touch what they touch, and feel what they feel, all from the comfort of your own home In Cyberpunk 2077 this kind of tech exists, and it’s called Braindance.
In this video, Jake Dekker looks back on the history of one of Cyberpunk 2077’s most popular forms of entertainment, Braindance. Although Braindance shares some minor similarities with VR headsets, the technology couldn’t be more different. Unlike virtual reality, BD can engage all five senses by stimulating your brain in a variety of ways. This results in a fully immersive experience that lets you live out scripted moments as someone else. While the most obvious use for this tech is cough porn, it was originally used to rehabilitate convicted criminals. But like all revolutionary technology, it became a crucial part of culture and its uses extended far beyond just those two things.
For more Cyberpunk Lore, be sure to check out our other videos, including our deep-dive on Adam Smasher, the cyborg who almost killed Johnny Silverhand. Cyberpunk 2077 comes to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on November 19.

We are doing it already in some form. Living vicariously through other's experiences. Nothing is essentially new, culture is constructed, or learned behavior passed on through social cohesion through the need to belong. Braindance will just be a novel form that transcends even further the need for imagination by decreasing the possibility for suspension of disbelief to be broken. Weak ego slaves create, and use these types of escapist fantasies, since it is never enough, never completely fulfilling, and keeps feeding the dopamine complex that says I need/deserve more of this feeling. I find it totally ironic that I will be playing this game on a monster computer that is part of a link in the chain towards the type of future. I love the social commentary of this genre and this iteration in particular, but consciously/unconsciously we are spun into the web of its eventual emergence by financing its creation and experience.

That will kill the game, it’ll be the new Mass Effect 3 ending.
@yellowbeard1
@yellowbeard1 3 года назад
That would be a really shitty twist. But going off your idea I think a fun subplot would be if after the main game a side quest opens up where V could sell a modified version of their adventures and make a bunch of money off of it. So instead of the whole game being a dream your main character can sell their play through as a dream for others. It would get really meta and as an optional side quest I think it could be fun. Some people really wouldn’t like it but if it’s optional then it will be fine.

@Nospam Spamisham Not all crimes deserve death. What if some people merely did it out of need.
@mutantbearbear5245
@mutantbearbear5245 3 года назад
@Nospam Spamisham Clearly this does not work either, as this method has been employed in various societies over the course of human history. The human condition unfortunately cannot be reduced to a simple set of clean cut problems and solutions, otherwise we'd have done that by now. Inequity is a complex problem embroiled in the needs of the individual ego and its need to exist within a greater social context. Given that variation in biology is already a complex problem, imagine what happens when social pressures get added to an already frail cultural approach to openly dealing with psychological and social problems... chaos, as we have it. Greed and inhumanity reigns supreme, squashing whoever cannot cope in the status quo off the Modern production and consumption paradigm. Therefore opportunistic crimes will perpetuate through systemic 'pomp and circumstance', organized crime thrives because of corruption perpetuated by those in power. Without these narratives, leaders may fear an immanent obsolescence of the brand they're selling, hence politicking until they get their fill, and moving on to the next cash cow rooted in human weakness, they can exploit. Don't get me wrong there are leaders that do exhibit a sense of urgency to create more equitable intersectional interactions within societies, but they are generally bound by bureaucratic tape that exposes a rather dysfunctional inertia inherent in our 'coping mechanisms' or production/distribution/consumption systems, thus negating the rapid change most ask for, yet are not that willing to painstakingly invest in. Life takes work. It will always take work. Pride yourself in your contributions to understanding the human condition, and it may ease the suffering of its complexity, if you care to really look and understand beyond shallow assumptions we generally tend to project onto 'others'.
@mutantbearbear5245
@mutantbearbear5245 3 года назад
@@yellowbeard1 Ethnically homogenous societies generally have lower crime rates and more functional social cohesion, multicultural societies do tend to be more inequitable, hence more social discord and thus more incoherence. It is unfortunately an observable fact, not a rule mind you, but still a general tendency widely observed and recorded in sociology and anthropology. The only way past this is either homogenization of general values (as will be a pervasive value found in multi-ethnic but not 'multicultural' societies) or an educated and actively practiced respect for what we perceive as 'the other'. Epistemic differences are a major source for lack of social cohesion, and epistemic and ideological views are difficult for the average Joe to comprehend and put into practice. Not impossible mind you, just not currently part of the status quo in education.

That would be INSANE. And if they could get it to work with rehabbing criminals possibly, without the horrendous side effects, might be much less people in jails for their whole lives. Probably not, but still interesting. But imagine if you could just take a drug and live out someone's day, and if you could take the drug at home, some people would live in there. 1000%.

the first cyberpunk stories came up at the beginning of the 60's .. and I did a little research .. : already in 1933 Laurence Manning wrote a series of short stories called: "The Man Who Awoke". In one of them people could program their choice of dreams and sleep their lives away... I find this fascinating how someone can come up with ideas like that at that time..

Looking forward to this game BUT my head-canon is that Braindance is just the updated versioned the tech from the 1983 movie Brainstorm where they use a (muffled laughter) type of VHS tape to record people’s thoughts and experiences and allow others to replay them. The tech was advanced in the 1995 Strange Days making it slightly more digital and now perfected in Cyberpunk. Sooo those movies are canon in my odd world.

I want a BD where I build a homestead, off the grid and deep in a forest. In fact, skip the BD, I just want to do it IRL, then sell my experience to people and make them rethink their life decisions.
