So i've never done competitive IRL motorsports and last time I did any gokarting at all was at a birthday party or something like 15+ years ago, but I took up sim racing and rally games in 2020, and seeing this Andretti quote and shifting my mentality to that helped my lines SOOOOO much. I changed my thinking from a mentality of rather than simply "slowing down" with braking to using the brake to distribute the car's weight and convert forward momentum to angular momentum (especially on any type of loose surface). Even on the simulator getting a feel for how you're using the brakes to distribute the weight and convert momentum to your advantage is a big step to improving your lines, lap times, and tactics. DISCLAIMER: I am not good at sim racing by any means, i still fuck up and crash out on a regular basis, BUT i have made an improvement over the years (altho my current iRatings don't show that due to a recent period of just trying WAY Too hard when i needed a break LOLOLOL)

Brakes allow for forward weight transfer. In a kart it's important to lift the inside rear wheel to free the engine as it does not have a diff. The outside wheel allows faster wheel speed thus engine speed. More engine speed means the engine will be closer to it's optimal engine speed and you will be faster out of the corner. Now sliding keeps both rear tires on the ground and also means your speed is = to the average speed of both tires. It could work for corners that you are opening up, but at that point you shouldn't be slowing down anyway.
@Beregorn88

I just recently learned that in some karts only one wheel is connected to the engine, while the other is free spinning

I would say this aspect of "Not Braking" is more or less depenent on the karts and tracks. I have been to indoor places where you quite literally cannot make some corners without using the brakes, and other tracks where there are 0 braking points on the entire hotlap. K1 for example you can pretty much take the entire hotlap without touching the brakes as the motor slows the kart down enough to make most corners.

Thanks for sharing your experience! With the karting tracks I've raced at, lift is enough to get the balance shifted and not decelerate too much. The karts decelerate too much otherwise and can't accelerate out of turns as quickly as other karts I've seen. 🤙
@herrono4964

Lifting can compromise engine power whereas if you brake hard in short bursts you can decrease the speed just as effectively while maintaining more engine power, and as mentioned in the video turning under braking can be very effective in karts

What I have to say about this, it really really depends on the track layout. If you’ve only got medium speed- and flat out corners, you should use the breaks, but you don’t necessarily need to. But on a tight and twisty track, you would be stupid not to break

Some modern rental karts have a cut of system that allow you to keep full throttle when breaking. It will be a good comparaison to try the 2 tecniques (normal one and brake without lifting the accelerator). Ever wondered if this can save you some tenth of a second. Btw are you competing in SWS ?

Funny story (I'll keep it short) Years ago I was in a err... juvenile correction center (CORRECTION not detention) and for recreational things they would take us as a group on "field trips"...we went to a cart racing circuit. These were older style carts not the ultra fast ones they got now. There were more of us than there were carts. So we had to wait in line for a turn. I kept noticing they had this one cart that they kept to the side the only one. I asked what was wrong with it. One of the guys there told me that the brakes were completely gone. I said can I ride it anyway? He was like sure, you just won't have breaks, no one else wants to ride it. Not only was I the fastest guy on the course... I never had to wait in line to ride... I just kept on riding as everyone else kept on getting on and off and waiting in line for their next turn...lol

As said above, I've done a lot of indoor karting and definitely going sideways heats up tyres MUCH more. The sideways scraping, combined with the need to throw bigger angles to scrub speed, combined with the throttle overuse makes the rear tyres "go off" within ~3mins... Fronts ~5mins. Will take more than a lap of "rolling" for them to recover

I let off before the corner that’s all the braking I need and a bit of scrubbing. 😁 Most tracks don’t need literally any braking but the new electric karts scrubbing doesn’t matter as much because they have instant torque. The clutches in these crappy low powered karts need higher rpm to engage the clutch so that’s what kills your speed.

What about letting off? How does it affect? Because sometimes letting off helps rotate the car without slowing down as much as with braking
@kartingtips

My timing was slower (25.234) when only lifting off. This is because when you release your foot the kart coasts for a period of time. A quick tap of the brakes slows the kart down quicker and you’re able to get better exit speed this way.

I don't know... The tracks I've been to, if I touch the brakes then the cart's electric engine bogs way down and it takes a while to get it spun back up, where if I just let off the gas momentarily I can carry way more speed and keep the RPM's up.

Aren't the corners you are describing exactly like the ones at 0:32? To get through a section of corners as fast as possible it's important to keep the minimum speed up and get a good final exit. With a high entry speed you'll lose speed on that exit, resulting in a lower minimum speed than just having a little lower entry speed and getting a good exit. And being a heavy guy, your biggest hit is to your acceleration, getting a good exit keeps this to a minimum.

Lift a little earlier and coast into the corner if it's a relatively quick one. If its a slow corner, brake gentler but earlier as this doesn't unsettle the kart as much and therefore gives maximum grip at turn in, allowing you to carry more speed before you get the sliding

You are getting slower times without using the brakes because you are still driving the cars the same way you do with brakes. Try entering the turns wider and turning sharper once you hit the apex while also powering through, full throttle as soon as you turn sharply. The reason you are slowing down while skidding g is because you lost momentum by turning in before the apex due to your position so close to the smaller portion of the curve.

How does rotating your back tires work? Do you break a little when turning or just turn hard enough that the back tires slide a little bit to rotate the kart? I'm assuming the kart should just pivot and not slide.

You pump the brake and block the rear wheels, to let the back part move and place your kart in the best direction to leave the curve.
@Jortio
@Jortio 8 месяцев назад
No arguing with the points made here, since there is no denying the benefits of braking. But on the flipside, there are indoor carts out there with underpowered engines that are incredibly slow to pick up (the non electric ones with too little torque at low RPM), in which case braking less or no braking means you can keep the RPM in the optimum range for much faster pick up out of corners. That can more than compensate for the downside of not braking mentioned here. Again, it depends on the carts. With most indoor cart tracks moving or having moved to electric, this argument has indeed been settled though.

@MajorBuzzkill23
@MajorBuzzkill23 7 месяцев назад
The throttle "curve" in rental karts is usually quite poor as it's usually done by cable. Try to learn to modulate your throttle, one long lift to 70 or 60% is usually better than the complete short lifts. Try to visualise the pedal to an actual percentage and listen to the engine noise, make small variations every lap and feel/listen to the effect they have.
@Cardiakk
@Cardiakk 7 месяцев назад
Well, karts don't have anywhere near the horsepower to benefit from modulating the throttle, unless it's a 2 stroke or you're racing on a wet surface. In karting, being smooth and precise on the wheel is everything. When you make the decision of going back to the throttle, your approach to the corner had better been the correct approach and a highly experienced racer knows how to make the correct decision over 90% of the time. The instant you're back on the throttle, you need to be 100% committed because when you pedal or modulate the throttle with such low horsepower, it's more costly in the long run than just calculating the proper approach from the beginning without having to lift. In high horsepower applications, it's beneficial to modulate the throttle because the horsepower helps in rotating the car through the corner and modulating the throttle also keeps it settled because you're minimizing wheel spin which is lost time.
@edgarrosario8346
@edgarrosario8346 6 месяцев назад
Im gonna have to disagree on that statement if you are in a proper electric rental kart OTL storms are decent.. you have enough tq to modulate your throttle inputs to maintain the speed not only going in but going out of the corner as well. One big lift, zero counter and a couple pumps while rotating the kart in the apex will keep the momentum going. So long you get the weight off the inside by leaning out of lifting your bum a lil off the seat... But on gas powered yeah the fall off way to fast.

@edgarrosario8346 Nah. It's like an On/Off switch if they're electric. Still slower to 'modulate'.

@@Cardiakk not really if it feels like an off and on switch kart needs to be trickle charged... Or a power cable to one of the batteries is cooked. You shouldn't have that big of a delay on a freshly charged maintained kart. In fact if you get on it too quick after a big lift it should light up the rears..

@@edgarrosario8346 Dude, electric karts have abrupt throttle curves. I didn't say anything about a delay in throttle response. The throttle response is instantaneous. It's not a smooth curve like fuel karts.

So basically you want to avoid making your kart shudder around turns or slide, and you do that by quickly braking to get the speed down to just the right amount in order to be able to take whatever corner you’re at smoothly, right? There’s no really hard or fast rule other than try to go as close to this smooth limit as possible? Explains why my first time karting I was going flat out but was still slower than some lol.

i always wanted to figure out how to brake, when i brake i either lose too much speed or i brake hard like in an f1 car and spin out of control, or dont brake at all, this has changed my driving style, thank you Ktips.

I just found a local indoor karting track and they have there own "league" (nothing official) that you can join if you have consistent times they want. It seems like most karting places have somthing similar and that could lead to other opportunities if you're good enough

I work in a karting circuit and I can tell that so many people really think that they are faster with no braking and when I tell them the opposite they think that Im joking around or making them go slower for some reason. Easy 80% people believe that
