►About the Game -
Bramble The Mountain King takes you on a gripping and unsettling journey through stunning environments. Take on the role of Olle, a young boy setting off to rescue his sister, kidnapped by a dreaded troll.
Not everything in Bramble is exactly how it seems - in this strange land with creatures big and small, you must be careful when to approach and when to hide. Many hungry and spiteful beasts lurk in these forests and caves. Watch your step....
Call upon the Spark of Courage, an enchanted fragment granting the gifts you need to endure the pitfalls and trials in your path. Defeat the horrid creatures you encounter in different and unique ways. Be warned, courage without kindness can take you down a dark path.
Key Features
Adventure as Olle, a brave boy who sets off to rescue his sister.
A beautiful yet dangerous world to explore.
Encounter twisted, mythical creatures from Nordic folklore for epic-scale boss battles.
Tense, heart-pounding moments with hi-end visuals to match.
Throughout the game, you will meet and defeat monsters in the form of bosses. These scenes will be violent and bloody. Some of the monsters may have human traits, but all are monsters/creatures in Nordic folklore. In addition, you will be able to see dead creatures or animals in magical forests, these create storytelling around the trolls' everyday life. Some fantasy creatures have bodies that resemble the human shape, sometimes they appear semi-nude or wearing revealing clothing.

What was your favourite section/boss fight?
@sekijawi
@sekijawi Год назад
My favourite section would be the short but exciting escape from the näkken. The best boss fight is against the mountain king. It got different phases with increasing difficulty surprising you several times with unexpected moves and killing you. Also, what could go wrong in a boss fight using a remix of a metal song with a fitting title?

My fav is when you enter the plague village and the song called "Du blomstertid nu kommer" starts. Its the song all the kids sing on school graduation every year. Weird to hear it while Olle is walking between all the crucified witches. Gives me goosebumps

I really love that Swedish folklore games are taking off more, our culture can really offer an adventure when given the chance. When Olle opened the book and started reading of the girl who went out despite being told not to I instantly knew what this was about; the old traditions from the times of my grandparents and back were that of using stories of the frightful woods and many dangers and supernatural horrors to dissuade children from straying, as Sweden is incredible rich in dense forest, vales, dales, many a treacherous terrain at night where children could injure themselves or die, not to mention wolves, bears etc. But conventional dangers do little to dim the gleam of curiousity, thus, many old legends of folklore were used to impart obedience and safety. Fun fact: I know an older lady who's named Lillemor, it's a very antiquated name by now but many of the older generations still bear it and it translates to "little mother".

@@alexanderb5726 Nah, Nøkken and Huldra and pretty much all of that stuff is Norwegian and Swedish. The 4 best known Norwegian creatures are Trolls (due to our very mountainous landscape), Nøkken (inland bodies of water) and Draugen (sea), as well as Huldra (forests). It's Norse mythology and folklore, not specifically Swedish at all.

Very beautiful game paying homage to Nordic folklore. The gnome sounds and society are so cute. I really like the intentional decision to narrate the game like a fairytale, without the characters having voices. The 3rd-person POV and swooping angles are really cinematic. Every little aspect is fantastically done, such as the movement of Olle through different mediums like guts and vegetation. Love the horror elements; although the character death animation and sounds can be a touch too realistic for me 🫣 The snap of the Näcken's head in Olle's direction upon first contact was really unnerving.

Clearly one of the best games of the year, (aside from the glitches), this game has really caught the interest of several of us. Norse mythology is one of many that have very grotesque stories that would unfortunately not be seen as appropriate in today's society. I was told these when I was a kid and I had many books about these. Something that I then thought of, Olle is only 8 years old and has already been through far too much that an 8 year old should NOT be involved with. Once he found Lillemor, he must have changed mentally. even mentally scarred for life... But if you go back to Norse mythology, it was often like that. Among other things, the myths were used to scare the children - a method used by the parents to make sure that the children listened to what the parents said
@nidhoggsvrede

This is Norse folklore not Norse mythology. With exception of Skogsrå none of the creatures in the game appears in Norse mythology.

What an absolutely phenomenal, epic game! Tuva and many of the visuals reminded me so much of The Dark Crystal, and if Jim Henson was alive today, I could honestly picture him turning this into a movie. The visuals were stunning, the music as epic as Olle's saga. Despite one or two minor glitches (which didn't detract at all from the game, I'd have to say this is about as good as it gets. 2023 has been a mind-blowing year for video games, but I have to agree, Bramble blows everything else we've gotten thus far out of the water! Can't wait for Shesez to do a Boundary Break on this one.

Your joy over this game just makes me happy. An incredibly beautiful game that isn't afraid to show the ugliness that is seen in some fables and myths. They also made what was already an epic song even more amazing - so smart to make it the background to the climatic battle; the music while they were escaping in the end was also pretty incredible. I hope this game gets all the recognition it deserves.

Game of the Year! Seriously, what an awesome experience and story. Just within a 3 to 4 hour play through this game delivered so much of an experience, more so than a number of triple-A games can deliver in 20 to 30 hour play through. Bravo to Dimfrost Studio, WELL DONE! Larger studios need to pay attention. This game was cute and ugly, tender and violent, heart warming and heart breaking all at the same time. It delivered on all fronts. I'm so happy you did this in one play though, I would have been driven mad if you would have broken this up into multiple videos. That sign said roughly translated "punishment awaits the blasphemer, and a flogging for the fool" Mjöl = flour Gud välsigne = God bless Thank you so much for this playthrough, this game is amazing. I am born and raised in sweden but feel sad that i know so little about our folklore. Näcken i do know of course 😅 Also, the song that is sung in those beautiful scenic moments is an old hymn/psalm about how after winter is over nature comes alive again and flowers start to bloom, a sort of rebirth, winter turns to spring and then summer. It is often sung here when students leave for summerbreak. Roughly translated, the song is called the flowering season is upon us ( den blomstertid nu kommer). This game also shows the swedish forests beautifully, it is so spot on. I've never run into any of those monsters but the scenery is very familiar. Such a good story and such a beautiful game. Like I think lots of us have requested Chris to play things like the Fatal Frame series, Point-&-Click games like the Nancy Drew series, many obscure PS2/Wii Horror games, etc. But of course probably one of the reasons Chris might not play these games yet is do to the issue of viewer counts (Reason he abandon A Plagues Tale 2), but when it just one playthrough video that would be much less of an issue.

Agreed! I know there’s logic behind splitting up a popular game because you get more viewers as people want to see what happens. But I truly enjoyed this in one video, which kept me immersed in the story so there was a catharsis of emotion at the end. That’s the way it should be!

There were some minor hitbox issues with the platforming, but considering how much work went into the game, a little hiccup isn't surprising. The developers did an amazing job with this game. Also gotta give them props for not shying away from the darker elements. The only issue I have is them trying to make Olle feel guilty for killing the monster in the woods. She lured him there to tear him open and use him like she did with lots of other people. Why should we feel guilty for retaliating? Not sure what they were trying to convey there, but it fell a little flat. Otherwise, everything was a joy to experience.

Very relieved they didn't pull a "it was all a dream". It was more a coming of age story for Olle, learning independence through strength and perseverance. Also glad that the sister carried him through the final leg of escaping the castle. He had done so much, but not in a triumphant knight in shining armor way, more pushing beyond his limits to do what needed done. The sister (presumably) carrying him home also gave her something to make up for putting them in danger in the first place.

This is definitely one of the best indie games this year, made even better by Chris's commentary. It has so many great things about, pretty much everything that was already said in the video & I am glad we got it all in one. I do have some random thoughts about it: I am curious as to why killing the shapeshifter was considered something worth regretting. It was clearly a malevolent creature, unlike the fiddler who was actually a tragic monster. The shapeshifter should of been glad it wasn't an American kid otherwise it would of been the Glock of courage. Lastly, I don't think those were supposed to be zombies but are most likely ghouls. which are actual mythical creatures that the modern zombie is based on (more or less).

You know the games that just make your whole week, and you go on talking about such a game long after you've played it? Bramble: The Mountain King is definitely one of them. With epic music that rivaled some in the newer God of War games, to ensuring you have quick reaction for a satisfactory escape not only in boss battles (think the plague village), this game is a true fairytale wonder. Boss battles ensure you're not starting over from scratch because they don't want you too stuck on them (which allows you to keep on with the story, not get frustrated) to cutscenes placed frequently throughout the game, it's narrative never slowing the story down, and keeping you on your toes. Plus, with all the morbidity we see, it makes us truly wonder what will come at the end. (I'm not spoiling). Thank you Chris for giving this game a platform, and the praise is so deserves.

Beautiful. A fairy tale in game form. Stunning visually and endlessly creative. Very dark thematically in places as all great fables and fairy tales can be. It doesn't hold back with the death of kids. Reminds me in places of The Tale of Two Sons as well as the more obvious influences like Little Nightmares. A must buy for me. Well done for uploading the complete game, having breaks lessens the experience.

Alrighty, I am back after playing the game myself. SPOILERS BELOW - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - This game is phenomenal. The soundtrack has to be one of the best things I've heard so far this year. In The Hall of the Mountain King was an incredibly on the nose and appropriate choice for the final boss battle, I think I kept dying so much because the song was distracting me lol. The game was unfortunately not as long as I expected it could be, but the content we got is so incredible I can forgive that. Each boss battle felt different, even if the ball of light was utilized as a tool for a repeating mechanic it didn't feel reused because each setting and chapter was distinct and brought a fresh new feeling to the game. The dev team did an absolute banger job in combining a fable world with some real, truly horrifying historical elements, and that's probably one of the best ways that I've seen a story being told; with fiction and facts intermingling. Honestly, if this game isn't nominated for something, there may be riots in the streets. Now time to go back and make sure none of the baby gnomes get got by a bear trap. D:

Oh wow, what a game... I have to ask, did anyone else notice the plague witch standing in the background of the village at 2:21:19 watching while Chris was trying to cross the roofs? 😱 CREEPY. Also, the fight with the plague witch had to be THE coolest, hands down! That was sufficiently creepy and interesting to watch! Also, the Hall of the Mountain King remix for the final battle was just epic chef's kiss! Thank you for playing this!

Nordic folklore and a sumptuous looking environment made for a very enjoyable play-watch in two sessions, a three hour vid!? the best boss fight was obviously in the halls of the mountain king with the appropriate music to accompany the table dancing action. Thrilling action and man chomping zombies and best of all a good ending. A magical game.

I'm only one hour into this (I'll have to watch the video in several sessions), but it's already pretty amazing, the hype from the demos was more than justified ! Edit : finally finished the video, and yeah this was great. Along with the beautiful visuals and the audio, I think the biggest selling point here is the variety : I don't think more than 15 minutes went by without a change in the gameplay and/or the environments. Serious contender for indie GOTY for sure !

Yesterday, I saw this was the update and forced myself to wait until my day off (luckily, that's today); And the wait was absolutely worth it. It's silly and light when it needs to be, and is perfectly contrasted by the dark creatures and intense horror elements. Visuals are lovely, creepy *and* unique. Story is compelling. Music and sounds suit every arc beautifully. On another note, I love how (lately) I can hardly sit through a 2.5 hour movie without getting bored or antsy....But a 3.5 hour long video from you, and I can't get enough! 1:47:15 You really said "Swiper No Swiping!" Kidding aside, I actually felt really bad for Olle by the end of the next part. This game covers some really dark elements, and Olle has been through a LOT of trauma in a very short period of time. I thought the ferryman might be an equivalent of Charon or a reference to Hárbarðsljóð? Like Olle needs to prove he's worthy before he can officially cross the river to get to the mountain and save his sister? 3:16:35 Edvard Grieg - In the Hall of the Mountain King playing in the BG was somehow unexpected, but so cool and added to the intense atmosphere. I appreciated that the shadows of the scepter and the rocks falling gave you a little advantage in where to not be + that the blows came pretty much in tandem with the music. I got chills with this part. I can't pick a favorite part, because every part was stellar and I'm amazed at how much they could fit into one game so perfectly. I DO wish there was some way to learn more about this world they've created though. The world building is so vast and detailed that I wish there was a way to learn _more_ about it. Another future game, a book, a podcast, *_something_* I'm almost desperate to learn about this world. I'd even love to hear about how they went about creating this world before the game. How much planning went into it, how they organized it. I am in awe. The only time I can remember feeling this way was when I read the Kingkiller Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss (anyone who loves this game and loves the amount of detail going into their world building would probably appreciate this series, but be fair warned it is not complete yet). Speaking of which, 2:15:00 reminds me of Felurian, which I like very much ✨ I enjoyed watching you have SO much fun with this one, your commentary was great as always, and your excitement was infectious. I agree that it deserves awards.
