It's quite obvious if you ask me red means danger and there's barriers blocking you from crossing and there's signs telling you what to do, so what's the point of traffic lights then?

@@GBLCUK Completely ignore the point of my comment. What would be the harm in using traffic lights that everyone understands because they see them day in and day out?

While there are some similarities between a wigwag and a regular traffic light, the rules vary slightly between them (although this mainly applies to emergency vehicles). With regular traffic lights, emergency vehicles are allowed to pass them at red. However, with wigwags (i.e. the ones used at level crossings), emergency vehicles *cannot* pass them at red, as level crossings present a much higher risk than a traffic light controlled junction.
