Tim takes a part of a branch and turns it into a beautiful one piece vase. Fun and fire ensue to make the turning into a unique sculpture. Special thanks to Tim's good friend Maurice Clyma for the inspiration for this project.

You don't want the new neighbors to see you burning wood outdoors in the yard because that might make you seem like a crazy person... I get that but... you're SOL if your woodworking room has thin walls because unless you've told them you make videos for your RU-vid Page, all they know is that your burning stuff "indoors" and talking to a bunch of invisible people that are not there and going into laughing fits every few minutes. LOL BTW: my lady walked in at the beginning of this where you were talking about finding downed wood being rotten and she just chimed in with the words "you should see a doctor about that" and I had to pause while WE had a laughing fit of our own. Even when you don't know it and didn't say it you still make people smile. Thumbs up and see you in the next one.

Fun project! I love the field trip in the beginning. Great contrast from the gorgeous once-in-a-lifetime piece last time (huge teak slab 1 meter x 1 meter x 25cm) to a great learning project for no cost at all. Also... I have some ideas for Out Of Round. o_o - Soap - Chocolate - Wax? I know you did the crayon blank clock one time... maybe turning a big candle? until next time, keep turning! 8-)

I was wondering if you could leave the top solid (maybe turn it so that it looked like the vase had a lid), then bore up through the bottom and hollow out the walls of the vase itself more so its walls were thin, and run some wire and a red or orange LED lightbulb up there to make a lamp of sorts. Given the burn job and the clear coat, I think it would look really neat if the vase sort of glowed from within, as if it still held the fire that charred it, if you see what I mean. Not sure if it's feasible or if the wood could take that kind of stress, but it's a thought to play with.
@goldbunny1973
@goldbunny1973 5 лет назад
That sounds like a great idea, you could infill with low power LED's making it look like the log lamp is on fire...

I'm so jealous, LOL! Wasn't allowed to do woodwork at school but I'm actually pretty good at it, I must find an Evening Class but I think you can do a lot even using hand tools and dremel drills etc. What about sticking something light reflective over "the dangerous bits" so you can see them more easily and avoid accidents?.

Since the gentleman you got the wood from is an arborist are you going to give him a vase in order to possibly get some good turning wood from him in the future? My gardener also does tree trimming and removals and for some wooden Easter Eggs for his kids and a few custom wood pens with his company name on them I get first look at his work trailer before he heads to the recycling center.

Not the same as Tim uses in this video, not new ones anyway. Ryobi no longer makes them, so you might be able to buy a used one. I own two of them, one that I bought new and one my father owned and never used. I use mine quite often, I carve out large burl popcorn bowls and other things with it.

I apologize in advance for my lack of knowledge of tools. May I ask the models of your chisels? I see they are Thompson’s I’m new to the hobby and I like how yours look. The seem comfortable in the hand. Also what size lathe do you have. Right now I just have a small table top Delta. It was given to me and I’ve come to really enjoy turning small projects. Thinking of investing in a larger system and just pay this one forward to my friends boy. Thank you

Just wondering, I get a lot of mesquite. My family doesn't want the mesquite trees so I harvest for stuff. Do I leave the bark on or take it off. As rough as it is, could it ruin tool edges?
@lenmullin3216
@lenmullin3216 6 лет назад
Michael, all bark is hard on edges, it can dull tools quite quickly. Especially, if the logs are yarded over mud and rocks.
