16:23 I wasn’t sure, either, about how Lisa got rid of the poison….but I watched another recap and they said that when Lisa’s “Mother” touched her, “she” pulled/extracted the poison out and THEN she transferred it to Boro, which is why Boro’s face became disfigured, immediately, after and, subsequently, “she” began to deteriorate. That is when Boro began to contemplate finding a NEW human host to take over.
Many frames in this show could be paintings where you see Lou shrink himself to her anger. (Lisa Nova) Rosa's eyes speak before she gets words out. I really love watching everything she does. Katherine is such a great villain. She portrays the calmness of someone whom has seen hundreds of years but doesn't care.
I don't think the toad was ever going to kill her. I think it was another trick, and the sex/blood magic meal was ment to help with the jump into Lisa's body. She was saying there's not much time, after having mentioned several times that she was tired. Boro actually seems to truly care about that, because she really ment that there's not much time left for herself.
The frog was poison. When the spirit finally touched Lisa it took the poison out and transferred it to Boro. That’s why her face starts rapidly decaying. It’s now killing Boro and that’s why she has to accept another body and not wait for Lisa’s.
But it might have been weakening Lisa in a way she would be deadly to a weak Boro. Boro probably has a way to remove it after she takes over, but Lisa is far too powerful for Boro so she has to poison her to get access… but it backfires because Boro didn’t realize how powerful the jaguar was in Lisa until it was too late.
I think that Boro never really held up her end with the curses and was manipulating Lisa the whole time. Making her think she owed so that Boro could have access but Lisa was already powerful. Lisa was able to hurt Lou at the party before ever doing any rituals. She set the guy on fire with her eyes and everything she wanted actually happened.
The poison left Lisa when her 'mom' spirit touched her and then went to touch the face of Boro. Hence, why Boro started to fade so quickly afterward. I missed it too, but saw it in another reaction. :)
I loved this show! But I also loved Channel Zero 'Candle Cove'. I agree, some episodes were a little weaker. Rosa's acting blew my mind. She was so amazing. I also loved the colors and lighting and the overall atmosphere. I will be rewatching it again soon :).
One of the choices I love about this show is that almost everyone knows about the curse. Even the guy being cursed and he even gives her a key ingredient for it. That's not something you see that often where so many people are in the know about something. It's also interesting how people in the show don't really react to the supernatural elements. Where in any other show people would be freaking out and trying to rationalize everything. I really liked that here.
So did anybody notice at the end when boro jumped into Mary's body... Katherine's character said who are you? Am I Jennifer? So did boro leave the other soul behind when she left the body to take it back? Anybody else catch that?
I think boro is so open cause at the end of the day she can make the people who walked into her home zombie food. And I think the dad seen her around and tried to find answers but never got anywhere with it
I loved this show as a limited series. I love a limited series cuz it has a chance to complete itself with payoffs.. if a show is constantly picked up they leave on cliff hangers and what if it gets cancelled without giving us payoffs? We're left edith an incomplete scramble of events that inevitably mean nothing. The Firefly series had the wherewithal to make a movie to give it's fans a chance to be fulfilled by the storyline. Payoffs. We can only get that these days in a limited series. That said, bring back Im Not Okay With This!!!
I adore this show so far. Nothing predictable. Great acting. Funny. Everything fits. I'm surprised and that's a good thing. Edit: after episode 5 this show went to the nonsense realm. Too much added. Otherwise good stuff.
Just finished the series. I enjoyed it. This may seem like a dumb question but did Lisa really not know what changed in regards to Lou stealing her movie or did she simply want him to admit to what we already knew? Seems like she should have definitely known why he flipped on her.
I think she knew, but Lou treated her like an entitled child who didn’t understand how the film industry works throughout the series. Lisa just wanted him to come out and admit to what actually happened.
@@millyringworm4164 I think I’d addition, she didn’t know if he was truly a villain (kind of the theme of the whole show to me how power can portray a villain, but it doesn’t necessarily make you one… your choices do) until she found out if he was a true evil like she felt in her hurt, or as she found out at the end and why she spared him, that he was just a petty has been tired old man taking his life for granted and living off of the tail of his career… it dispels the illusion of his imposed power and how shallow he truly was.
...Imagine if Guillermo Del Toro could have lent his "eye" to the twisted mysticism of this tale. I can only IMAGINE 🤯 Thanks so much for this, Steve!!
Am I the only one getting serious Marina Abromavich & Lady Gaga vibes from this entire series? Anyone familiar with all that disturbing dark shit that goes on in Hollywood and the music industry? Idk, this feels like it’s representative of Marina and Gaga & all that dark crap they’re into. Seriously.
Would've been much better if there was someone to root for. Good acting, but I hated pretty much every character. Really feels like there should be another season. I think I would like it more if there were. Great review!
I took the line "she told me you were an actress" when Mary and Code speak about loving Lisa, as sort of hint that Lisa didn't *feel* loved by Mary. Like. "She is acting, she's an actress. " I mean, basically Mary got to see Lisa's "true" face but that made her crazy and ripped her eye out... so... yeah... she probably *didn't* love Lisa's true self. Mary is also very much fucked up in the head before this I think... cutting herself to please Lisa pushing for the drug thing and then you know... killing Code. But I feel like these nuances might be overlooked by many people. You can even contrast it with how Code and Roy treat Lisa and how they react to the weirdness around her.
To me Mary represented someone who was willing to sell their sold cause it couldn't get any worse which is why she was willing to let boro take over her body because she was already messed up n the head
@@zasmonroe3579 I mean. Sure. That's the whole concept of the "deal with the devil" trope. It's the same with Lisa. But underlying that, there was a bigger issues, which also is a thing in that trope. XD it's just different for different characters. Which is fun to figure out imo. I think Mary is a sort of empty person who needs to be needed by people, like she doesn't have a purpose without anyone else needing or wanting her. But that can be selfish too. (And sort of narcissistic) And her actions against Code proves that she isn't just "normal wanting to be loved" or like... that her *need* to be needed isn't unselfish. And yes, boro totally took advantage of that. But that's just the surface of the matter. She expressed violent selfish actions and feelings long before she met boro. And the scary part is that she's blaming Lisa for it and Lisa believes it.
The post kitten birth sex scene was a close deal breaker for me so yeah not everybody’s cup of tea 😂 I absolutely loved the show apart from that disturbance lol I would def watch more if they decided to continue the show !!
Eric Lang also played Lyle in Escape at Dannemora. Took me a few minutes to recognize him, he really does have a ton of range. And yeah Rosa Salazar was absolutely incredible. Not really "my kind of show", the paranormal woo-woo stuff usually just makes my eyes roll, but I liked it a lot. Feels like there's a goldmine of subtext waiting to be dug out.
I enjoyed The grittiness of the film making, the cast, and the horror elements. But I felt like their were no redeemable characters to root for. The only thing that interested me was the host of Jennifer/ Boro obviously 🙄 wanted the main character to be her next body snatched candidate. But the gore .... was something.... Great breakdown Steve, with that conclusion I was thinking 🤔 how she gonna find her mom in Brazil and she didn’t make the effort years prior? At this point do we even care about her Art house film she went all the trouble for? Do we want to go on this anti-hero journey?
Great review! I really loved this series. You helped me understand why. I liked the first season of American Horror Story, but lost interest in later seasons because there was so much shock and gore that only seemed to be there to shock viewers. There was no shortage of shock and gore in this series, but it was almost always relevant to the story, not to mention creative and bizarre.....throwing up kittens for Pete's sake. They actually made throwing up kittens a relevant part of the story...that's an accomplishment! And...yes the performances were awesome! Keener was perfect, while IMHO was really out of her normal element. Rosa was amazing! Gotta try to find more of her work!
This is my favorite show since covid started. I like how they had her in the bathtub. They used nudity in such an innocent non exploitive non sexual way. This series reminds me a bit of William Burroughs' Naked Lunch.
So glad you not only reviewed this show but also broke this series down - I’m not sure if I’m the “niche” demographic that would REALLY get a kick out of the bizarreness of this show but I have to say, I appreciate this series for being original and intentional. You made such a good point about the whole Jaguar story being stronger had we gotten a visual (beyond the chaise lounge in the “basement”) - I loved the flashes of the faceless woman in the jungle in the first couple of episode so it would’ve been cool to see Bora’s origin story play out in the jungle. The last episode didn’t totally stick the ending for me - Lisa just running away from Bora’s home after Roy was killed left me wanting more, but I did like other aspects of the ending (that ironically the person that started this whole vengeance quest for turned out to be one of the few survivors) & that she ultimately deserted her movie. That said, I’d be totally fine if this stayed a one & done season/limited series as they had originally intended it to be.
I love weird shit and this was definitely weird. I embrace weird with open arms. Where I believe this show fell flat was with its ending, there didn't seem to be any satisfying conclusions and closures, nor were there any satisfying or well-done explanations for things (I'm absolutely fine with stuff left unsaid for ambiguity, what I mean is things where they think they've explained it but I saw it as poorly executed). I appreciate it, but I couldn't help but feel it was just setting up for a series two...
I would kinda like a second season that still followed Lisa's character. I think there is still some things to explore with the character. It could be focused on what happens after revenge, the redemption and the learning.
I would eat the world, characters, cinematography, score, mood, absurdity etc up for every meal… but I kind of hope they don’t. I think the only way her power could be told even in a 90’s waking haze of a dream was when she was in the trap in that city, where Boro found her… the magic is in the moment… I think they could do something successfully that I would like, but in my heart, I hope it lives in that moment forever.
I think the mother was telling her that Boro was stringing her along with pointless ‘tasks’ and the poison was long gone, that’s why she didn’t need to eat the omelet.
The show is way better than the novel, in my opinion. The novel was used well as source material, but I support all the changes they made to Lisa and the story. Edit: The lack of profound reactions to all these crazy things happening is something that really bothers me with the book. Like everything is just mater of facktly
I’m halfway through, I think worth the watch and quite interesting. I don’t get hype for rose Salazar though. Unless something craze happens, she seems like a bystander. I haven’t seen any chops or anything worth the chops
in episode 7, the poison is gone because it seems like her mother/the jaguar(?) has mystical powers to save her from dying. the same thing happened in episode 5 when she was killed and her mother brought her back to life (you could hear the whispering as she was brought back)
