That thermal paste is PTM7950, a phase changing material that is extremely durable due to almost zero pump out compared with traditional thermal pastes. Probably the best thermal compound for bare die applications. It liquifies with heat and hardens at room temperature.

I use phase change pads for my diy audio amp output transistors. It's amazing stuff for the price, way better than mica or silicone. However, phase change pads or paste need a specified degree of pressure to work properly and I'm not sure you heatsinks are clamped with enough force to GPUs.

These special thermal pastes are built to be dry, to counter pump out effect. They have pretty good thermal conductivity even when they are dry, but the huge advantage is, because they are dry, they dont get pumped out, which happens quite easily on baredie applications, due to a huge difference in thermal expansion coefficient of copper vs die.

Well, this is enough evidence for me to call this issue a dangerous design flaw. I've had 3 of this exact GPU (EVGA RTX 3090 FTW 3) over the last 2.75 years and the first 2 both stopped working and had to be sent to EVGA RMA. Of course, they denied both and sent them both back broken...but by that time I'd figured out it was how/where they put that PCI bracket. Even though my 3090's lived their entire lives with the PCIe connector pointed down with gravity and the motherboard beneath them (in a sideways cube case) this stupid issue kept cropping up. After buying the 3rd identical GPU (I know, during mining times no less, but needed the VRAM for work) I immediately removed the PCI bracket and secured the GPU PCB to my case via zip ties. This 3rd 3090 has been running fine for almost 17 months now and I hope for it to last several years to come.

This is why I have issue with most prebuilt setups. What they should be doing is packing the video card and memory in separate containers, and giving instructions on how to install them to people, including call in tech support to walk people through this who need help. THat would eliminate a LOT of the shipping issue problems. Mind you when fed ex kicks the box to your door, or you have porch pirates, that's another issue entirely.
@tourmaline07
@tourmaline07 10 месяцев назад
I agree - considering it's just three connectors and a slot to push into and a screw on the rear of the case it's not too difficult to install this , and would be easier to ship

Ah the dry thermal paste is suppose to be like that. They’re off some kind of phase change material. Which means when it’s under heat, it “melts”. This type of paste prevents thermal paste “pump out”

dude i love your videos, they inspired me to do some very light maintenance on my hardware, mainly just repasting. So far I repasted an "old" laptop with a mobile 1070 and reassembled it successfully and also repasted by strix gtx 1080 to great success, under 70c under load and 11c delta to hotspot I experience some issues with my 3090 from msi, the MSI RTX 3090 ventus 3x OC with 24gigs of ram. The hotspot delta is almost 20c or more, so I plan on repasting that card as well. it doesn't thermal throttle just yet but i want to prevent future performance loss. would you think I can do it on my own without breaking something or rather bring it to a professional? The pads should still be fine so it would really just be a repasting

Hardened thermal paste does not exactly indicate that the card is brand new, but may have overheated beforehand and the solder balls became brittle as a result. These fractures were certainly strengthened during transport. Sonderballs become brittle and dry out over time because the flux that preserves them and keeps them thermoelastic evaporates over time with heat.
@SianaGearz
@SianaGearz 10 месяцев назад
We suspect it's not thermal paste, because alcohol easily dissolves thermal paste no matter how dried up it is, and it did nothing. Phase change polymer pad is the thermal interface material of choice for high performance, high endurance direct die cooling, it looks just like this after use, and alcohol does nothing to it.

@SianaGearz 10 месяцев назад
Do you think these cards have paste on the core? Should be phase change polymer such as Honeywell ptm7950. It's applied like a pad but looks thin dry and grey once it's worked itself. It's not soluble in alcohols. When the surface reaches slightly elevated tempeatures, it melts and you have a circulating liquid polymer as a thermal interface. The performance of it is almost similar to liquid metal, better than paste, and it's free of long term degradation unlike paste, since because it's a polymer rather than a mixture, it cannot separate and dry out unlike paste. It's also not conductive unlike liquid metal. A safe and high performance thermal material.

The manufacturer warranty doesn't cover shipping damage for resellers, and the reseller needs someone to fix it. They would send it to a third party repair shop like this if they can. Odds are the purchaser did return it and the reseller sent it for repair.
