Ok, I need your opinions. I just got the Duchess of Hamilton version of this model and the front left handrail on the model is crooked and the water scoop on the tender has been snapped off and did not come with the model. Should I send this model back or not?
Hi Sam, thought I'd add to this thread. I purchased a R3677 Duchess of Hamilton a few months after it came out last year, and observed some slight 'clicking' and inconsistent slow speed running as you've mentioned in this video. This also had an annoying problem which required sending back to Hornby - was shorting out. The pickup / plunger area inside the locomotive had contacts with too much solder on, touching where it shouldn't. Hornby resolved this for me without issue - THANK YOU HORNBY! I've JUST received a R3857 6220 Coronation. TOTALLY DIFFERENT BEAST!! Same superb detailing. Slow speed IS consistent, and is running better now it's run in more-or-less - approx. 1 hour so far. I noticed when I did my 'routine lubrication review', on lifting up the inspection cover for the motor gears, all appeared dry - no sign of grease. I checked over the screws - all fine - then greased up the gears, and gave little dabs of oil in the places required, including the axle bushings ... perfectly smooth, and QUIET! So far it seems a little slower than Hamilton - may change with running as Hamilton has at least 10 hours' running time. I routinely add weight, and particularly the tenders. Coronation is up to 600g loco / tender. By coincidence, I weighed Hamilton, and without changing anything, with the extra I'd added at the time, it actually weighs 602g - just 2g more - pretty well matched. I'd managed to get the front lamps the wrong side initially - stripes for the outside, were on the inside! Sorted. I fitted all detailing - looks great. Main problem I had was adding artificial coal. Looking at the plastic cover removed coal bunker it looked a solid moulding, so I inserted a 'decent blob' of PVA, then covered with a part load of this 'coal' - correct 2-3mm size - and worked in, covered the white with some more and a 'spattering' of superglue to hold in place - ONLY inside and no glue 'issues' ... then left to dry. One hour later I saw a white splodge covering a front tender wheel and down to the track - YIKES!! Clean up time went smoothly and with occasional cleaning up, all was left on a radiator to accelerate the drying ... All is well now, and this is one SUPERB locomotive. Purchased on 'special' at a well known outlet for £40 below the £190 list despite being relatively new. Only negatives for me are: 1. Paint finish for a 'Premier' locomotive should have more sheen to it - not full gloss, but definitely a hint. It's really quite dull. 2. The wheels' blue paint is noticeably darker than the loco / tender bodies. I'm passing it off as dirt from the track, but it is quite obvious. Al.
Hi Alan, Thanks a lot for sharing - interesting about the clicking issue, useful to know what was causing that! Also strange that it was under-lubricated, as my last few Hornby locos have had far too much oil! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@SamsTrains I'm a 'keen follower' of your reviews, so yes, I've picked up on the apparent over-lubrication recently, and have observed this myself with some of my recent new locomotives, Hattons' 66 included months ago. There were no indications of surface oxidation - lubricant free metallic surfaces exposed for some time - so I've no doubt it is a brand new locomotive. Another self-inflicted 'problem' I had was the smokebox door handle - accidentally broke half of it off. I broke the rest off, leaving the silver-painted nub / centre, then ... I have various grades of piano / guitar wire, for just such occasions, and after several attempts at cutting an appropriate length, managed it, dipped one end into a drop of superglue and ... you wouldn't know the difference - perfect! Looks better as it's obviously finer and metal, not plastic. Very happy with the locomotive. Alan.
I love the term some apply to the rebuilt Coronations of 'semi-streamlined': i.e those that still had the curvature on the smokebox top edge required for the original streamlined casing. I'm sure it reduced its drag coefficient massively!
It's still a beautifully done model. As a streamliner it's quite simple as steam locomotives go but the shape has to be right. A lovely model of a lovely locomotive.

Hey Sam i'm Samuel but with a new name how does she perform because i want it for Christmas and if i get it i'll do a live stream not to mention i will do one but if i get it i will be soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo happy cause i love those Coronation and Duchess Class i have a train shop near me and i saw a 6229 Duchess of Hamiliton so i said i want that for Christmas and glad to see a same class being reviewed they need to run those class again also i am glad you did one cause then i have a lot of confidence of getting one Thanks Samuel
Hi Sam I bought one of these way, way back in 1977...I think, I was an apprentice cobbler and walked past my local model shop which had Lord of the Isle and this blue coronation. Seeing it every day I decided to buy both, earning about $25 per week, took me a wee while to pay them off. That is what got me into model railway. Cheers
Great review. Received same model in the post yesterday. Posted my want of the model, on a Facebook group last week and a retailer responded with a price of £135. Happy with the price and is a beautiful model. Just need to fit sound now. Your subscriber base is coming on leaps and bounds.
That's fantastic to hear mate - for £135 this is a real steal - glad you're enjoying it! Thanks a lot for the support mate! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I recently bought Duchess of Hamilton from my model shop, it’s a fantastic model, I was a little sceptical about the price, at my shop it was priced at £171.99 but when I got it home and onto my layout I was amazed, it’s a fantastic, it runs so smoothly even without a flywheel and the gold lining just makes the thing stand out on my layout among the sea of LNER apple green and black, I don’t usually buy LMS engines but I made an exception as the Duchess is one of my favourite Locos and I’m glad i did, these are fantastic models and I highly recommend them
Good review Sam. It does look good but I’m not sure it’s worth the extra Money when you can pick up 2nd hand 2001 models for £80-£100. It might be that Hornby had to use a different manufacturer for this which is whytey needed a new model. Otherwise I’m puzzled at the expense of a new model when the old one is pretty good
I agree Russell - the 2001 version is indeed going for £80-£100 now, and I'm not sure the improvements warrant nearly double the price! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Wow! What a lovely loco. I don't know what to do about the noise because in real life all engines would be loud and all parts would make their own noises but in model form I do like my motors to be quiet. If I was to want a noisy loco I would put a sound chip in it. Lovely video with lovely locos! Cheers Daniel:)
That's very true Daniel - they were noisy things - but they didn't click and wine like this did ;) For sure - a sound chip would make the right noises! ;D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I'm currently re watching this video of the Coronation Class streamlined version in the LMS Blue because it is my #1 favorite tender locomotive of all time on your channel! :D This is a treat for my 16th birthday!
Wow!! Sam i honestly didnt expect you to get one of the new coronations until later next year as there really expensive but still she realky is a stunning engine
Late to the show but I just got one of these for Christmas from my dad. I really wasn't expecting one of these, let alone with DCC and sound fitted. Running on DCC I have found this to be 100% reliable and smooth and has now supplanted my Bachmann limited edition Silver Fox Elizabethan as my best runner. I'd totally recommend getting one. 😁
This is one of my most favorite steam train locomotives from you on your channel! I love the blue paint on this train since blue is my favorite color and I like the sick streamlining look for it to go fast while picking up passengers. This is my favorite locomotive from your channel next to the 4468 mallard. I wish they add this train in a future update for Train Sim oh the iPhone and android.
I am impressed with what Hornby can do these days with regard to detail. However, I bought a highly detailed A4 recently, found many details to be very flimsy and have discovered I don't really care for them. I would love to add an older version (in the same colour) with matching coaches to my collection, though
I agree - it is super impressive! Sadly a lot of the super detailed models can be a bit flimsy - something that's always bothered me! In that case, you might like the 2001 version - those are much less fragile! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Simply beautiful Sam, really shows how far the hobby has come! It is a shame though that everything has to be super-detailed, as all it does is increase the price. But gosh, it does look good...
The Coronation is one of the most beautiful steam Locomotives Britian has EVER developed and all those wheel details are absolutely sublime. I think it might be the best looking Coronation model yet.
I can just imagine bullman is saying " Ha, gregsby I'm on a better train than the Christmas train, I'm on the end of a prestigious CORONATION SCOT!!!!!! "
I didn't like the Coronation until seeing this model.. Goodness, the detail is absolutely gorgeous. I really do like it a lot, that blue and white livery is stunning..
WOW!!!!! That is a stunning model!!!!! And of all your streamlined engines, this new version of the Coronation would have to be my favorite. The painted cab however completely blew me away. I also REALLY love the detail on the wheels; that is beautiful!!! Gorgeous locomotive, and by far your most beautiful streamlined engine. :)
Thank you Chris - ooh yes I agree, this outshines the rest quite easily! The painted cab was a lovely touch, especially given how shielded from view it is! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hi, Sometimes Hornby saying 'new tool' means almost nothing. Take the Hornby Patriot. The only difference between the old and new is that the tender has a wired connection. All detail is the same! Love the look of the coronation! Merry Christmas William
That's very true William - although this really is a re-tool - you can see the differences - they're just not as extensive as you'd expect :( What you say is right though - they do have a tendency to call models 'new' when they're not ;) Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hi again, Sam. A very fair review. I guessed you'd be right on to this new model and so was I! To my amazement, my unit (from Hattons) reached me last Sunday evening, 23 December '18 - less than a week after it hit the UK shops. Not so remarkable, you might think, until I explain that I live 'down under'. In terms of general appearance, detailing, features and livery I think it's very impressive. I've only had the chance to run it (with two s/h Coronation Scot coaches) on a one metre test track with one point leading to a spur. There was slight unevenness in the (necessarily) slow running but the point was negotiated well and I'd guess performance will be smooth after running in. It should be a good puller, as it seems to be just about the heaviest loco in Hornby's current range (some well-known steam outline models are not). I, too, have the maroon and gold City of Birmingham in the earlier tooling. That remains an excellent model; the new QE is marginally better, but whether it would be worthwhile acquiring by anyone owning the earlier blue coronation is a decision only they can make. You make a very good point in calling for diecast metal bodies for important releases like this - my thought exactly. No doubt it would drive the price up, but I'd sooner have fewer but better models in my stable. Others may see things differently. Cheers!
Thanks a lot Rob! Blimey that is very good, considering where you live! As you see, that unevenness was evident with mine too, but it seemed to clear up as time went on! Definitely - diecast is expensive, but hey - the model was pretty damned expensive ;) Thanks for watching - Sam :)
You should get an American streamlined K4 engine used by the Pennsylvania railroad and compare it with this engine as a way of comparing US streamlining with British streamlining
I recently got this model (Duchess of Hamilton though) for £130. I did not have any of the performance issues before running in as it was super smooth running and quiet out of the box
Coronation trains have always been my personal favorite. They're appearance is certainly fitting for a king or queen and I would love to have a coronation for myself :)
She's certainly stunning, even allowing for the "blind baby whale" looks of the prototype. I imagine the re-tooling is tied to the recent release of the unstreamlined version, presumably they share a chassis/wheelset/motion and Hornby took the opportunity update the streamlined model.
That's a stunning Model Sam, and clearly shows the very high standard now available in RTR locos from Hornby. Shame about the early glitches, but I'm sure this will be a very popular model.
Absolutly beautiful loco. I much prefer the Blue to the Red, but thats just my opion. Would love to get one of these as I have the coaches for them (Both the Blue and the Red ones) But I only have the BR red unrebuilt one of these. Great video mate, really enjoyed.
Got mine today from Hattons. It is a stunning model but a complete pain to remove the tender cover to fit the DCC and even worse to refit the cover. Having to bend the plastic clips back and bend the plastic ladder was terrifying! Why couldn't they just use screws all round? I had a much older tender drive model which this replaces and it is a marked improvement on that. I agree it is quite noisy but don't have the squealing problems from the tender. I think Hornby's price was taking the mickey and Hattons was just about ok if you really need to buy it, although I paid £156 for the pre-order and it's jumped up to £171 as soon as it was released (cheeky!)
Is that so John? I haven't tried to take mine apart yet, but sorry to hear it was such a pain! I don't know why they couldn't just use a few extra screws either - very annoying! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Great review Sam.... this train is wonderful! Justa thought .... if your pickups are "scraping" on the wheels but ARE right, then one thing you can do is wipe a SMALL amount of a substance called GRaphited Mineral oil.... and this CURES any sound they make related to the pickups... the way it works is that the graphite in the oil allows it to transmit electricity, yet still lubricating properly and without power loss. It really does help even though traditional wisdom says not to oil pickups.
@@SamsTrains Now i never knew that!!!!! Im imagining that its a case of wipe on and then wipe off again to get a thin enough film to make the electricity flow unimpeded?
These engines are freaking massive they deserve to pull the heaviest, fastest and most luxurious express passenger train. Also the streamlining is really elegant and I love the color
A good review again, Sam. The new tooling and detailing is a distinct improvement on their older version of this model, and the new livery/lining is streets ahead of the old version. The main colour is 'Caledonian Blue' which is correct to the prototype, and the silver lining has the correct dark blue edging/piping as per the prototype also, which was used by the LMS to accentuate the silver. The next steamline version in 'Crimson Lake' should have its gold lining piped with maroon as per the prototype. Incidentally, I'm not sure whether the NRM have included this livery detail of maroon piping on their version of the Duchess of Hamilton's streamlining, as I have not yet seen it myself.
Dear Santa. Please get me this loco for Christmas. Lol. XD Fantastic video Sam. I’ve seen the plannings of this in this year’s catalog, but never expected her to be so beautiful. She’s absolutely gorgeous.
First of all princess coronation with PULLMAN'S not done. L O L Great video Sam. Beautiful beautiful BEAUTIFUL locomotive. STUNNING. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟Can't wait to get hold of No 20. Happy Christmas Sam 🚄🚅
Looks good... But out of Bullied Pacifics, A4, and Princess Coronation, these are the ones I'm not a fan of when streamlined. But give me a unstreamlined one any day of the week!
Have you ever thought of adding a 009 section to your layout? Problem is, 009 is very expensive for such tiny models, and there really isn’t very much RTR out there, compared to 00 or N. It all depends on whether it would be worth it.
Oh I didn't really get a Coronation Class in LMS Blue on my birthday I just re watched the video since it's my #1 tender locomotive of all time from the UK. It would be cool to get one if I decided to get into the model train hobby. :P
I love the blue paired with the white stripes! It would be cool to see the Duchess of Hamilton and the Queen Elizebeth on a race. Great vid Sam, keep up the good work!
Hi Sam. Very nice indeed. A shame, as you said, about the plastic whistles and the converging white lining at the front not quite as good as the Princess Alexandra. Doesn't the addition of the matching blue Coronation coaches make it an astounding combination? Much prefer the blue livery to the crimson!
Excellent review Sam, top quality as usual. All i can say is WOW, what a stunner. Hornby really are maintaining the quality, lets just hope they can keep it up. I look forward to your next video. Be well and keep safe, regards Gary. P. S. Have a Happy Christmas and lets hope Santa brings you some more stunning locos.
Thanks so much mate - yes WOW is a reasonable response - definitely very impressed with this one! Let's hope they do keep it up! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
An extra front bogie for different radius sizes?? Never seen that before. I'd love it if Hornby now made a new set of coronation coaches to go with it too! :-)
Hi Sam, wonderfull review. The Coronation model was a very good model, with a very nice perfomance and detail. Its a good improvement of the original model, but I think the reason why the tooling is very similar, its because there's not too much to improve, since the tooling is already very good. I may get attacked by this, but I think the streamlining is a little bit weird on the Coronations. I mean its not bad or anything like that, don't get me wrong but the non-streamlined version looks is a little bit better to me, and I quite enjoyed the loco. Anyways, I hope you're having a very nice day, and I'll see you soon.
Hey! Thanks so much for that - yes Hornby did a really good job on this! I agree - there's not much to improve, which makes it a strange choice to re-tool! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Thanks a lot Ian! Yeah I'm not too sure about that - I can't see the real thing being as messy as that, especially looking at the NRM one! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
20:41 The stripes on the tender line up with the coaches which didn't happen with my earlier (2001 ?) Coronation loco. I had to file the bogie pivots to get the coaches to ride lower.
Hi Sam, Cracking video bud. I have the BR blue duchess of Gloucester which I got from hornby direct £205 for mine. Mine looks and runs amazing. Yours looks very elegant with the streamlining applied. The blue and silver is a striking contrast against the old one. I think the De-streamlined Pacific’s is where the retooling was necessary as there’s a lot more on show possibly? Cheers Ross.
Hey Ross, thanks a lot, glad you enjoyed it! Yes I agree - I can see why they retooled the unstreamlined version.... but not too sure about this one! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I got myself the Duchess of Hamilton in the nice crimson, has the same squeak with the tender wheels too, so must be common across them all, tolerable though.
Not the biggest fan of the streamlining but I can't deny it's a beautiful locomotive. Would love to see you do of the newest tooling of the un streamlined version.
That's okay mate, not everyone is a fan of the streamlining! Yeah I would love to do that, but those really would be too expensive :( Thanks for watching - Sam :)
@@SamsTrains yeah I saw your review from one of them last year where you mentioned to the price. I'd love to get one of those things but it's even more expensive getting it over here to America.
Hi Sam, Another great review, I have this on my wish list. There are other reviews on here that make reference to the clicking and noisy/uneven running. Can you tell me if your example improved with further running in.?
Hi there, thanks a lot for the comment! It's a little quieter now, but it still does it's fair share of clicking and whining - no idea why really! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Yes I noticed that on playback too - it isn't actually on a pony, annoyingly it just hangs below the chassis, unsprung... I could try oiling it, and then it may go around! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
To be honest Sam, the improvements are numerous and fundamental. Everything, including the moulding and livery and fine details are now all far more representative of the prototype. I would even say that the older model was a good toy, and by comparison this new one is actually a finescale model. Incidentally, the new lining has a dark blue border to the silver stripes as per the prototype, and not black! Will look superb running with their new Coronation Scot coach rake!
I'm thinking about ordering this locomotive, the Queen Mary version. How would you compare it to the best models hornby has produced lately? Like the P2? Thanks!
I have the QE and the Duchess, great models like you said, one thing though, the bogie below the cab is fixed and the wheels are flangeless, looks great on straight track but a tiny hint of a curve, the wheels looks derailed looks silly.
Great to hear that! Yes the pony is inaccurate - presumably a compromise - if it moved, you'd have to have a huge gap beneath the cab, which would be even less realistic! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
My family and I sailed on that ship from Southampton to NYC in 1965, when I was 12. Five days of luxurious comfort and brilliant food. I got quite upset when she burned and sank.
Dutches of Hamilton is such a good looking streamlined engine! Also this is my first time here on this channel, and already, 10/10 with my favorite steam train! :D
Seen out for me at 1150 minutes into the video I find the lamp irons on the old one of better handrails on the new one that's better the stripes and body panel gaps and nicer but when you get below the part where the straps converge you have have much more sharper detailing in terms of the step plates to lower lamp iron the drawbar hook ladder steps
Nice review Sam! Hope you have a merry Christmas and a Happy new year! Also Hatton's have a sale. They are selling A two locomotive Pack. I can't remember the name of it but Dad says it was £250. Good value for 2 loco's and rolling stock and a loop of track.
Thanks a lot mate - all the same to you too - have a fantastic Christmas! That is very good actually - I'll look into that, thanks! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
