I have never clicked on a video faster! Been wishing for you guys to listen to this one. Current issues aside, Brand New are one of the best bands I’ve ever heard.
What great commentary, obviously y’all know some history, amazing band, I’m sold on you guys. Keep it up, keep learning, compassion for your fellow man!
Same here buddy. I think this album came out when I was just turning 17 and that was a rough year for me. Had the pleasure of seeing them live that year.
@@DJ_Rmpg it was kind of a weird show, it was Brand New, Motion City Soundtrack, and the Weakerthans 😂 good, but weird. Brand New played first and I loved every minute of it.
Such a powerful band. Jesse is an insane lyricist. Got me through a lot of stuff in high school and the music continues to be a metaphorical shoulder to lean on lol.
"I'm scared I'll get scared, and I swear I'll try to nail you back up." It's also the idea, that every time we sin, we nail Jesus back to the cross. If Jesus wasn't nailed to the cross, our sin would lead us to eternal damnation. So all of us constantly nail Jesus back to the cross every day.
Criminally underrated band. So many songs from that album are worth listening to: "Millstone", "Tommy Gun" and a few others. The band is definitely worth digging into deeper.
I don't blame him for feeling that way. If you look at what Jesse Lacey is accused of and how he hasnt really denied it. It makes this song so much darker
@@kasper301615 I've always loved this music and Jesse's ability to write music. Now, we know he's (accusations deleted), we hear the remorse of someone who has done bad things. 'IF they don't put me away, it'll be a miracle'. Lacey cannot be pardoned for his transgressions. But the music stands true, regardless, it's harder to relate to the music, but to me, it's almost more interesting now. His pain is not really an existential pain like i used to think. It is actual regret.
Mine too. I listened to The Devil and God one night and I didn't really care for it. But then You Won't Know came on and I was floored. I listened to it like 5 times and then restarted the album. And now it's my favorite album of all time.
Brand new is one my favorite bands they helped me get through a lot of tough days same with blink-182. God the things I’d do to hear these bands for the first time again :’)
Brand New -one of the best concerts I was able to as a a youngster. These guys were my absolute favourite, I still listen to them all the time. I saw them right after "the devil and god are raging inside me" came out. They were still playing small shows then. Saw Jesse Lacey in the parkng lot. Really cool!
Around that time or before they played a big theater in Phoenix. They were damn big back then, they had Thrice open for them. It was dodge theater in Phoenix. Damn good.
Yes! My favorite band of all time. This album "The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me" is a lot about the lead singer struggling with depression and his faith in God. Its my favorite album of all time next to "Animals" by Pink Floyd. I hope you guys react to more of their stuff.
As an ex-Jehovahs Witness, I understand the immense pressure and paranoia that comes with breaking from organized religion. You're taught as a child that disobedience results in banishment and when Armageddon arrives, you WILL die. He's holding onto these beliefs even though he's clearly separated himself from them. This is a song of desperate fear and identity crisis.
I love Brand New. Such a good band (in terms of their music rather than what the singer has done). I’m an atheist so I interpret their music in a different way.
Great band & song. Jesse Lacey writes some very poignant lyrics. It'd be awesome to hear some reactions from some of their older stuff too; like the Deja Entendu album.
the lead singer has experienced death left and right when the band wrote this album, this album was when he was experiencing his most loss. i think snowing season explains the albums pretense better.
Brand New isn't a Christian Rock band but they do have a lot of Christian references and themes in their music because of the singer, Jesse, going to Catholic school growing up
Thank you for this reaction. Such a deep deep dive into the meaning and what you both felt. It’s crazy how interesting this was. If you want another “desert” is deep and has a lot of political points, also “limousine” is something you can read into (wild story) and “degausser” is a good one that’s not easy to dissect
I know it’s an old video, but this album was written during a time in which Jesse was pretty damn near hopeless and really coming to question his religious upbringing.
I've gone down a Thrice rabbit hole on your videos only to end up here.. My two all time favourite bands =) You should check out Dustin Kensrue (lead singer of thrice) do a cover of this song. P.S. That pause near the end gets most people too lol
Deja Entendu is a great album front to back. Shit I bought that CD back when it released, almost 18 years ago, and it's still one of my favourites to this day.
@@possumlodge5368 it’s amazing. Picking a favorite album from them is like picking a favorite child (I assume lol). I fell in love at age 12 in 7th grade thanks to MySpace and now I’m 30 and they are still my absolute favorite by a long shot
Jesus’ mother was pregnant out of wedlock traveled w/ jesus all over,@12 genius n taught spirituality w/ 1 suggestion:: love others AS you love yourself.
I think this song is about a rough time in life where it all seems to be happening to you and feeling completely alone with the pain you’re holding, as well as contemplating suicide. Asking “god why is this happening to me?” Because you know God/Jesus is suppose to love you unconditionally yet he’s put these dark and difficult times in your life so you’re almost like simultaneously losing faith in him. At least that’s how I can relate to the song. Plenty of times I lay in bed thinking everything good is happening somewhere else, I myself am not scared of death but if god does exist I’m afraid of judgement because i know I’ve made mistakes.
Interesting perspective - hoping you get the answers you’re looking for. I take a more literal meaning, a “confession” of sorts about the guilt of some shit he may have done. Things always changed meaning when the circus started around him:.. best to you friend
Mene by Brand New is an on the nose song about people who struggle with faith. Give it a whirl. They were wrapping up as a band a few years ago when old accussations came back to light about vocalist. Though was all done by then and the singer took amends, and from what was published those affected had forgiven transgressions. I think people knowing they were calling it quits tried to tarnish them again. They didn't really challenge it publicly and just ended the band as they intended.
Brand New is my personal #1 favorite band. Not many people are reacting o their music… could you do Play Crack The Sky or anything off their Science Fiction album?
it would be interesting to see them visit brand new a lot more considering jesse is an amazingly clever lyricist and has a lot of songs intertwining with religion type themes.
Not christian myself, lvoe this band and to me the song is about how christians treat themselvces and others. About how no one is deserving of heaven, and even Jesus himself wouldn't meet the qualifications.
This songs about a Christian that is struggling with sinning and doesn’t know for sure if the life of sin will allow him to get into heaven. And if he does get in, he won’t know anyone because of the people that he loves aren’t believers.
Wow, you guy's actually listened to this song. You surprise Me all the time. @VinAnd Son This song got Me through a really messed up time. Was not in a good place... Again.
Jesse the singer was raised by evangelicals n it Fd him up. He’s spiritual, anti-organized religion just like Jesus. I’m from NJ, BN is from Long Island. I saw them before they got huge, their merch had F Brand new, or F TBS. He formed Taking Back Sunday but left over some member F’ing his sister. Some juvenile sh*t like that. It created a rivalry that made both bands big. No one knows if it was real, but the marketing worked wonders. It seemed very genuine.
Jesse, the lyricist/singer went to a Catholic school growing up, so he definitely had religious influences growing up. Not sure where he is at right now.
still think often how brand new ended in such a sad and anti-climactic way. My favorite band, most depressive music ended in a sad way. kinda fitting tbh
“Jesus Christ that’s a pretty face, the kind you’d find on someone that could save, if they don’t put me away, we’ll it’ll be a miracle” I always heard it as him saying it to a girl, “Jesus Christ that’s a pretty face” then “if they don’t put me away, it’ll be a miracle” is a confession in hindsight because of the allegations against him, I never thought he was saying it about Jesus but I could be wrong
“I’m not afraid of death I’m a lil afraid of what comes after”. Is a juxtaposition. Jesse uses I all the time. If I go to heaven n won’t no anyone, how is that heaven?
Just found your channel, noticed you don't do a lot of main stream music. I like that. An artist you might like is Amigo the devil...too many good songs to name
Interesting. I usually don't listen to the videos that aren't Weird Al or old Metallica, but the name of this one made me check it out. I can sympathize with a lot of it, but I'm the opposite in that I'm not afraid of death, but dying itself is what i have... fear, dread, unpleasant anticipation of... not sure how i would word it, but some combination of those. I would hope the writer would find the peace that comes with knowing it isn't up to us to be perfect. Perfection is something we are brought into, not something we bring to the party.
You should listen to the whole album if you enjoyed this song. Its all about the lead singers depression and questioning his morality and his faith. Its called "The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me".
This song actually gets a bit darker once you read some news articles from around the time and figure out what sin he's repenting for. Those pretty faces don't belong Jesus. On the subject of loneliness I think there is another way you could take some of those lines if you wanted to go a weirdly political direction with this. In the book of Acts the original Christians lived in communes where even sick and tired strangers were afforded cots. Given their economic condition (they had sold everything) this means they were sharing beds with strangers in a different sense. Biblically speaking the people closest to God and their own community were so close in fact that they shared a communal sense of belonging (both figuratively and literally). The more people relied on this idea of prosperity the further we got away from the teachings. I maintain that you can't both be a Christian and a capitalist, and that Dorian will likely get Satan's bottom bunk. On the other hand I'm also not a Christian so take this entire paragraph with a couple grains of salt and a pinch of pepper.
love you two :D followed you for a while. love you taste in music. christianity really is beautiful. it´s such an amazing story really. maybe some parts are really just too good to be true. but that´s quiet describing the dark times really. people got scattered. and what we think of "bible" has many versions. all mixed from different pieces of the dead sea scrolls.
God is not gonna get fooled by any of us. Also God: “The Lord sent a pestilence on Israel from that morning until the appointed time; and seventy thousand of the people died” "Even at Horeb you provoked the Lord to wrath, and the Lord was so angry with you that He would have destroyed you." “And in the greatness of Your excellence You overthrow those who rise up against You; You send forth Your burning anger, and it consumes them as chaff." “By the breath of God they perish, And by the blast of His anger they come to an end. Seems this God of love that can't be surprised by anything needs some anger management. As for Jesus' suffering. One cannot suffer for another. If so they lesson gets lost. Quite the opposite if one would know that his actions are of no consequence because ultimately others will suffer those consequences this would be a very bad thing for humanity that's for certain. It only holds psychological value of solace to learn that another person suffered as well and suffering ultimately is part of life but can be endured with dignity and some sort of grace, yes. That’s why shielding parenting is so bad for kids who never learn to endure loss and disappointment. On the other had parents suffer for their kids or even die for them on a daily basis. People die for their ideals, Tibetan monks burning themselves for example and for me their sacrifice is even bigger than Jesus' one. Why? Because according to the bible Jesus KNEW he will come back. Those monks KNOW they won't and still the sacrifice everything. So what did people do? Invent some additional suffering into what Jesus did to get that argument out of the way. If you want it to be special you make it so I guess and yet we forget those living right here amongst us doing unspeakable things for others and to stay true to themselves (that never include harming other btw) but sure let's praise Jesus instead. It’s so comfortable to praise something from the distance, far away millennia ago vicarious in it’s execution (double meaning intended) and nature. Yeah in a way Vin you are blessed to be able to believe in all that. I’m working towards to be blessed in a way to not needing to believe at all and just accept what is. Now. Not shift my focus on what was 2000 years ago, not lose myself in some book and thoughts of someone else not in same doctrine not in some bigger picture and context. What is is enough. That’s the real truth imo. It's right in front of you in the silence of things and within you. If you want there to be more you distort that and shut yourself of from the truth. If you want it to be in the words of someone else you can't hear it anymore. Of course just my opinion. Everyone feel free to life live in whatever way they like but better not make that unsurpriseable god angry because he might kill you - out of love that is ofc.
I dont know this for sure but its coming from someone who is contemplating suicide and what will happen to them. "This problems going to last more than the weekend" "The ship went down in sight of land"
@B H ok - as a producer I wouldn't have accepted this song as it is. The "Ie Ie Is" and "shi-e-e-eps" etc.. the way he sings those few words is damn annoying. Otherwise the melodies, the vocals and general tone + lyrics are great. There's a flaw in the song and that makes it just ok for me. It would've been an easy fix. If you don't hear it then GL, it's a good song for you then.
Jesse from brand new began to despise organized religion bc of his evangelical parents. He knows the Bible like the back of his hand. All religions are fear programs, churches want to control the pple who are easily manipulated. Some churches are great, I’m thinking black churches. They no how make it a party. Hallelujah! The Thief in the night is actually how Jesus will come back n F up any church that preaches peace n safety. Jesus never came here for peace. The New Testament gave free will, bc the old divine plan 💯 contradicts itself. So when anything awful happens, u can’t blame Jesus or god. Humanity is to blame, n the old says god created us in his image which is BS. A god is indifferent to our primitive violence. He just observes. Jesus is our defender n whether or not he’s real does not matter, trust Jesus, u will trust urself to act when “evil” sh*t is happening. Faith takes incredible courage n maintenance. Just live, meditate n help those in need. Simple.
you guys have only reacted to 2 Annihilator songs. I've got another one for you: Imperiled eyes. Its a technical song, lots of tempo changes, and interesting bass lines for nice touches.
Bruh not caring if you die isn't normal? Like deadass? I'm just like meh if that car drove over me I wouldn't care like is that bad lmao I've no idea tbh?????
