The story behind Limousine is soul crushing! This song is about the death of 7-year old Katie Flynn. Hours before her death, Katie was the flower girl at her aunt's wedding, spreading petals down the aisle. As they left the wedding, they all got into a limousine and headed home. Martin Heidgen, 25, had had at least 14 drinks that night and his blood alcohol content (0.28) was more than three times the legal limit in New York (0.08). He drove more than two miles north in the southbound lane containing the Flynn family. Both the driver of the limousine, Stanley Rabinowitz, and Katie were killed instantly. Katie was decapitated and her mother held her head as rescue workers helped the rest of the family out of the vehicle.
This was THE album that changed everything for me. Was 15 and completely shifted what I looked for in music. From here on it was Built to Spill, Modest Mouse, Polvo, Silkworm, Dinosaur Jr.
Limousine is one of the best songs of all time. Definitely one of the best emo songs of all time. The story behind the song is absolutely heartbreaking. It’s about a little girl who was the victim to a drunk driver’s car crash. I highly recommend reading the genius annotations for the song. Also, I’d love if you’d react to Today I Laid Down by Bl4ck M4rkey C4rt. It was made by a 17 y/o teenager who unfortunately took his own life back in October. It’s a rather short yet impactful listen which previews what Kai could’ve become if he never succumbed to his mental health. A definitive artist in the lofi indie/shoegaze scene. Rest in piece Kai Wesener.
Love love love the bridge on limousine a few minutes in.. I have fond memories of hearing that song the first time a few years ago walking the street in the gloomy rain and no environment was more suitable for it!
@@mothpigeh idk. I’d argue there’s probably some inspiration there, but they have vastly different vibes and I don’t find them to be very similar at all. Definitely disagree on the vocal melody aspect. As far as chords, well that’s a whole can of worms and if you want to go that route then most music is a “rip off” of something else
this album was the soundtrack to my highschool years, and boy oh boy did it inform my taste for years to come. even if the journey of Brand New ended poorly (to say it lightly) I will occasionally revisit it because very few bands can scratch a certain itch like they do. the self pity, the storytelling, the instrumentation, the flaws and all. it all encapsulates itself into this frankenstein of angst, sadness, and melodrama but in a sense that lends credence to the creation rather than something to roll your eyes at. awesome video as always
Daisy is even darker and rougher around the edges than this one. Science Fiction expands their sound but also brings back a bit of their pop-punk/emo lightness.
One of my all time favorite albums. Glad to see you responded to it so positively. There just ain't nothing else on this earth like Limousine. Still suggesting Giles Corey’s self titled record. Done by the sane guys who did Deathconsciousness!
This is my favorite album of all time, and Degausser is one of my favorite songs of all time. Brand New is a one-of-a-kind band and nothing can ever come close to their discography. You really do need to read the genius annotations to get the full context of these songs. Regarding their other albums, Daisy (the album after this) is more raw, distorted and unhinged, and their last album, Science Fiction is a more atmospheric version of TDAG in my opinion. Deja Entendu is their biggest album and has a more traditional emo sound and their first album is fully pop punk. I think Deja is a good next album if you want to listen to more Brand New. I prefer their debut over it but Deja has hints of TDAG in it
I'm 33 now and have been listening to this album since it released 2006. To this day, I can't hear a single track and not immediately want to listen to the whole thing from start to finish. I truly think its a perfect album. The progressions, the guitar tone, the lyrics, the production... it's perfect. If you only listen to one album from the band, this is the one. It's so cool to live vicariously through you and see you hear it for the first time, I wish I could hear it for the first time again too.
@@ladygeorge505that’s awesome. this album is always the first thing I play when it snows for the first time each year. i very heavily associate it with winter
Wrote a dissertation on Jesus Christ for an online class and was truly one of the most captivating few weeks of diving deep into the lyricism I’ve ever had. I knew it was deep and personal but the further I went the more every single thing tied together. Love the religious analogies especially found towards the end of the song! I always skimmed over them when listening before. Total work of art!!!
Seventy Times Seven is a direct response to Taking Back Sunday because they were touring together and the lead singer of TBS slept with the gf of the lead singer of Brand New and he wrote this as a diss track. TBS followed up with There's no I in Team.
Luca still gives me serious chills. The "You can drink up the entire ocean, We'll still find someone to be everything we know you'll never be." is like a physically painful attack to anyone hearing that.
TDAG is one of the best artistic albums, ever. Brand New may not be the most technically proficient musicians but they have a unique ability to weave together powerful lyrics with intense and dynamic music and create pure art. The concerts I have seen them at are the best concerts I have ever experienced.
Yeah that’s a great one, I think how it feels to be something on is better, but Diary is certainly the best first impression of sunny day real estate though
This album was such a discovery for me. Sowing Season was in Guitar Hero 2 bonus tracks. Then I looked for this band to check if they got more good tracks. When I saw Sowing Season as track 1 I was sure it will be only good track just put on the beginning to lure in. I was wrong.
Lyrics are incredible. Sad/Depressing/Emotional, whatever you want to call it. Need to be in the mood, but a candidate for the best rock album of the 2000s
Yoooooooo let’s goooooo finaly I’ve been wanting this for so long I love you Smags thanks dawg ❤️ Allso this album will definitely have to grow on you and it’s certainly Emo.
I’m so glad you enjoyed this album! This album means so much to me, I remember exactly where I was hearing it for the first time when I was 14, knowing nothing about it, and it’s been one of my favorites ever since. It’s really cool to see people’s reaction for their first listen. Keep it up man! 🤘🏼
Would love to see more Brand New reactions! All of heir albums kind of encompass an entirely new genre, and it would be very interesting to see you react to each one. Their earlier albums, Your Favorite Weapon and Deja Entendu definitely lean towards pop-punk/traditional emo, however their sound continued to get darker and more progressive as time went on. Daisy, the album after this one is incredibly dark and experimental, would be an incredibly fun reaction, and their last album Science fiction takes the band in an entirely new, more mellow route. both are projects that I could see you adoring
i’ve been waiting for this one with bated breath!! brand new is so intense in this album, the concept of the album is explored so beautifully and i listened to it so much during quarantine.
Degausser is like... Having the good things in your life and the best parts of who you are erased by someone you're in love with and taking stock of who you've become after those things were taken away and hating everything about yourself and feeling like everything happened because of how awful you are. It's a perfect description of emotional abuse.
Thanks a bunch for doing this album bro…super influential album across the “emo” scene back in the day. This was the album that Brand New took their music to the next level. You’ll get people asking for Deja Entendu but the next logical album would be Daisy, the follow-up to TDAGARIM. Hope you get around to it, it’s very abrasive but it’s worth it. Their last album, Science Fiction, truly is a work of art and easily their best product. I always want more Animal Collective but it would be awesome to see you do more Brand New. 🍻
Devil/God, Deja Entendu, and take your preferred order from YFW, Sci-fi, Daisy. Calling Daisy number 2 is wild…I mean maybe you could go 3 as this all opinions but damn. Even Brand New admits it was a misstep (it isn’t a bad album at all btw)
@@nostalgia_clinic wait…you got Sci-fi, DAGARIM, as one and two?! Daisy 3? You must have a bib to catch the drool coming off ya mouth…crazy as a Jay bird😂❤️
Can’t wait to watch. You gotta react to volcanic bird enemy and the voiced concern by lil ugly mane!! Kinda similar the dean blunt but also very diffrent
Love this album man, quite a few bangers on here. Great video as always. I thought of a couple more recommendations: Lift to experience - Texas Jerusalem crossroads Asobi Seksu - Citrus Silver Jews - the natural bridge
This is one of my favorite albums of all time. Not a miss on here for me! I don't know if I could name a better 5 song run than the first 5 tracks on this album if you put a gun to my head. Edit: make it the first 6 songs I forgot You Won't Know was right fuckin there...
This is reminding me that I wanted to request “Downward is Heavenward” by Hum, and if you like that you should listen to their excellent recent metal-infused comeback record, “Inlet”
i love your channel, i found it very recently and i subscribed since i watched your reaction to Bloom by Beach House! this album is AMAZING 😍 i’m excited to see what you think of it it would be cool it if you reacted to Fantastic Planet by Failure and the first album by TR/ST (Trust?)
still loving the videos my guy a few recommendations: Process - Sampha (experimental r&b, great production) Nurture - Porter Robinson (light summer electric with fun production) Koi No Yokan - Deftones (very heavy, sexier and heavier radiohead imo) Hypochondriac - Brakence (very experimental emo rap, glitch pop) Reading Writing And Arithmetic - The Sundays (the smiths ish, with beautiful female vocals)
one of my favourite albums reacted to by one of my favourite youtubers 💪💪💪 please please please do more brand new (yfw or deja entendu pleaseeeeee) keep it up man
I saw them a few times in concert and they had the best live show I've ever seen (I've literally seen hundreds of bands live) P.S. Deja Entendu by Brand New is one of my favorite albums of all time
Garden Window by o'brother is not very well known but it's amazing, it manages to sound whimsical and heavy at the same time, I think you'd enjoy it (and I really want more people to know about it lol)
Half these songs should have been huge radio hits, unfortunately it came out at the beginning of the era where mainstream radio didn't give a fuck about artistically good music. Damn shame. This is also sounds like all of my favorite underrated bands from the 90s mixed in one album. So I guess it's only fitting that it was pretty much ignored just like all high art.
for a different sort of emo,, i would rly rly love to see a video on Brave Little Abacus, their album Just Got Back from the Discomfort We’re Alright is amazing and loved and pretty much the father of all that current emo is doing
I absolutely love this album, but I can't listen to it anymore. I even have almost all of their albums on vinyl and won't buy this one. I used to drink myself stupid listening to this album and just curling up on my bed crying. This album got me through some dark times, but it's also tainted with that darkness. Glad you checked it out.
PLEASE DO MORE EMO BRO. I’m not crazy for this album at all, but I think it’ll ease you in good Title Fight - Floral Green Circa Survive - Juturna Brave Little Abacus - Just Got Back From the Discomfort Capn Jazz - Analphabetapothology Orchid - Chaos is Me (take the screamo pill bro…)
