14:20 Fun fact: the producers originally wanted this film to be set and shot in Japan. They couldnt' afford it, so plan B was Paris. The director had lived there most of his life so he had to point out that the monster would have to swim up the Seine for hundreds of miles before reaching Paris. So London was Plan C

Fun fact: Gorgo (technically Ogra) is featured in one of the more recent episodes of Monster Island Buddies as an ex-wife of Godzilla. And she was a member of the World Kaiju Council along with Garuda and Maguma in that episode.

It really does all come back around full circle yet again, because Gorgo then influences the plot of "Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla" 1994 and also that awful "Gappa" movie that Nikkatsu Studios put out.

I love when you think the kid is mistaking the monster's name when Ogra is actually Gorgo's mommy

I don't understand why Gorgo never got it's own film series like Godzilla did. I think it would be interesting to watch Gorgo fighting other monsters from European mythology.

I'm surprised they haven't remade Gorgo. If the brits do handle themselves like Japan, why haven't they made more Gorgo movies? Wouldn't it be something to have Gorgo fight other monsters? Or have its own remake? Bring Gorgo back, god-dammit!!!!!!!!!

Gorgo also appeared in Gorgo comic books by Charlton comics for 23 issues.1961-63. With artwork in several by Steve Ditko that also drew Spider-man.

You know what they should have done with the diver? Said he'd died of decompression sickness, and wonder why a trained diver with plenty of air left in his tanks would return the the surface so fast that he gave himself the bends. That would have been highly realistic, and an unnerving clue as to what was lurking under the water.

My favorite giant monster film when I was a kid, because the "monster" wins. Let's face it--In this film and "King Kong", the "monster" is an innocent victim who is kidnapped for profit, so good for Gorgo. Also, I always hated that annoying boy, too.

Mother Gorgo would give the Original Godzilla one hell of a fight.

So some clarification, even if it's 8 years late: Gorgo is indeed the youngster. This movie was made right after The Giant Behemoth and the director's kid was upset because the military killed the monster, so he set to work making this movie in a somewhat hurried manner Ogra is indeed the name of the adult and it is indeed supposed to be Gorgo's mother, however they used the exact same monster suit for the mother and youngster, just different sized sets. Ogra is named after an in-universe legendary sea serpent known to the people on Nara Island which is why the boy keeps telling them that they ran into Ogra since she'd be far more terrifying for a diver to run into than the youngster.

One of my favorite monster movies when I was a kid,Gorgo does NOT die at the end of this film like so many flicks of this type back in the day.I understand there was a comic back in the 60's of this beastie.

Actually, this flick had some killer FX work for 1961. Great costumes too.

Gorgo is definitely no Godzilla, but the monster action doesn't appear to be all that bad, and I did like how it turns out to be the baby they kidnapped instead of the actual Gorgo.

The waiting for Godot reference at the end, Priceless.

In the novelization, the kid, Sean, is McCartin the harbormaster's son. Author Carson Bingham also added a grown daughter character for McCartin to serve a love interest for the lead. Also, the guy who gets killed by Gorgo's tail was seen before, several times. He's one of the Triton's crew and had a few lines prior to his death scene. To be fair, though, it took me multiple viewings over the course of several years to figure out who he was supposed to be.

This movie review of Gorgo is triple terrific terrific terrific, Mr. Tenold. All I can complement on this is never make Mommy angry.

Has anyone noticed that the little kid in Gorgo was 100% correct about the monster? I mean think about, The kid doesn't want "the main characters" to capture Gorgo because it's wrong, and YES! it is wrong! Haven't you realized that everything would have been fine if they never captured Gorgo! Has anyone also noticed that the main character (Joe Ryan ) is an absolute a**hole, I mean he treats the little kid like dirt multiple times, He disregards the scientists who want to study it, kidnapping the little kid who was being saved by the military, and refuses to set Gorgo free. And now the mother came and killed thousands of people and guess who's to blame for it? Joe Ryan, and the little kid was in the right this whole time.

My real gripe with the movie is Ill never know if Gorgo was leave or remain.

I've just noticed how many of the special effects shots involving the GORGO monster look very similar to Godzilla 1984... although it came out two decades earlier. Not the best movie, but the suit SFX are probably the best filmed in early 60s.

Well at least it's more like Godzilla than the 1998 Godzilla movie.

It was an odd choice to name the monster after the Gorgons - that is, Medusa. You'd think they would've chosen a name like Typhon, which not only sounds cool, but is named after a dragon-like (though that's a gross simplification) monster associated with the sea.

This is one of my favorite sci-fi films from my childhood, but, I have to admit, your review is a satirical new look at a classic that I have loved for years! I enjoyed it!!!

You know, since they have the Monsterverse; they should include Gorgo, Gamera, etc.

You should review Konga, another British kaiju film, and you should review the Korean Kaiju film Yongary. You can buy both of these in a combopack.

Brandon since you were confused about which one is Gorgo and which one is Ogra, here's the answer, the little one is Gorgo and the big one is Ogra. Or if you prefer, you can call her Mama Gorgo.

Funny bit of Trivia: The King brothers wanted Mum Gorgo to attack Paris, but director Lourie, having spent most of his life in Paris, pointed out how inland the city was and how long it would take for Gorgo Sr. to go down the Seine. Lourie also didn't want to involve the army at all, but the Kings thought audiences would go for it, and after they went overbudget they just used stock footage.

Yeah I was a little confused on if the mother was called Gorgo as well. But it turns out that the baby is only called Gorgo, and the mother is called not Orga, but "Ogra". Yeah it's a little confusing and I guess the Kenny was right all along.

Kubrick cast William Sylvester in 2001: A Space Odyssey after seeing his great performance in this movie.

"Ogra" is the locals' name for the creature. Dorkin was the one who called it "Gorgo".

I saw this movie in 1968, I was in high school at the time, thank you brandon, you brought back some wonderful memories.

You should review "Konga." It's a schlocky King Kong ripoff to be sure, but what makes it stand out is that is predates the '76 remake. A small tidbit of trivia: In addition to being released the same year as "Gorgo" (with some theater proprietors whipping up some ridiculously false advertising that depicted Gorgo fighting Konga, ala King Kong vs Godzilla), both films were adapted into comic book series published by Charlton Comics, and illustrated by none other than Spider-Man co-creator Steve Ditko.

Omg legendary studios needs to buy the rights for gamera gorgo and King Kong and put them in the Godzilla universe

Hello Brandon, Just caught your review, thanks for posting it. I guess I should say from the start that I am a Gorgo (1961) fan, as well as a fan of the original G'zilla. and Rodan, and most things Sci Fi/Monster. I must have caught every "Big" monster movie released. I appreciate your wit, and parody, yet all the while I am thinking, The movie was better then that. I was glad to see by the end, that you had a few good words to say. When I saw Gorgo at the theater, I was most likely the same age as the kid in the film (Vincent Winter) I was the perfect target audience, I truly related to the boys sentiments. I recall in retrospect that there was a article about Gorgo, in Famous Monsters of Filmland (6/1968) That went into detail about how the film was made. Very impressive Model work.mixed with live action (the men on the bridge as it is torn apart) short shots that elevated the film, The Mama with the little one walking by her feet.(Awww) Good effect in dealing with scale. Throughout the movie we have seen how large the young one is. It's tiny by the mothers feet. Wow. Thematically The 'Zilla and Gorgo have very little in common, save the likes of a three hundred foot tall creature with an affinity for knocking down buildings. Like G-dzilla, The degree of destruction increases at each attack. The Message of the 'Zilla, Stop building weapons, The Message of Gorgo, let mother nature be. Thanks. Ivor

I really love this movie. I like the older diving gear and diving bell used. Plus the circus and the idea of the bigger monster coming in during the last parts of the film.

I'm stuck on the artwork -- Dalek, flaming TARDIS, Mary Poppins, Brandon about to drop a teacup, some guy with a bloodied cricket bat, and whoever that is in the head rag. Looks like my kind of party. No wonder my British cousins don't come to the US often, but insist we go there...

honestly I still completely love this movie

I remember this movie was always on Television in Britain when I was a kid (on BBC2 mainly) especially on Saturday afternoons and Monday 6.00 clock slots alongside other sci-fi classics like 'Day the Earth Stood Still' 'Forbidden Planet' 'This Island Earth' and others. I remember the sight of Gorgo mother smashing up London landmarks and the photo of it trashing Tower Bridge was usually used in the TV listings magazine. I remember thinking it was quite sweet in comparison with the other movies because the monster wasn't all that bad and in fact got a happy ending which as you said is very unusual. In many ways it predates the Gamera series, especially with the 'boy and his monster' theme and the thousands of dead and injured overlooked in the happy ending. - Reason why I say all this is that nowadays almost nobody knows it exists and its never on anymore and I haven't seen it on sale here on DVD so this has stirred a lot of memories and given me a chance to catch up on it so thanks!

That kid loves watching Gorgo wipe out hundreds of people just a liiiiittle too much. Even Gamera's sidekicks were less enthralled by the carnage than the whole "wheee, a giant fire-breathing flying turtle that is friend to children everywhere" thing.

Well it was good enough for it to get its own cheap rip-off with Gappa: The Triphibian Monster.

The way that Gorgo was shot showing the red eyes and how momma was unstoppable force... well I watched the movie alot. Great narration from the reporter as well. In fact I bought a Gorgo tee shirt from G Fest in fact and wear it proudly.

Nice shot of the Friendly Giant. Even though he is considered Canadian, he got his start at the local PBS station in Madison, Wisconsin. I remember watching him during the 50s.
