Brandon's Cult Movie Reviews: THE FINAL TERROR 

At last, an 80's slasher movie with the word 'final' in the title that was actually the final one!

Oh you didn't! You reviewed my first film credit and now this. This screenplay won our film school's only horror screenwriting contest. Ronald (Alien) Shusett, brother of my boss, re-wrote the script. Gary then got Joe Roth together with Samuel Arkoff to get the thing made, hiring the future director of "The Fugitive" with Harrison Ford (Andrew Davis) to make his debut. It was a first for so many of the cast and the first slasher to suffer at the box office because it didn't have enough victims.

I actually met Joe Pantoliano last year at a con. I told him I was an indie filmmaker and gave me contact info in case I wanted him to be involved. Really cool

I love seeing Mark Metcalf in a horror movie. He ate in my restaurant a few years ago & could not have been any nicer to our staff.

I like how he foreshadowed that he is going to do the trilogy of terror which is a pretty damn good movie even though most people only remember it for one part

Hmm.... Mushroom Guy would actually make an interesting horror movie villain. Imagine: After his experience in the woods, he discovers that stalking and trapping in the woods gives him a thrill like no other. He starts by setting traps for animals, but finds that only humans can sate his newly-awakened bloodlust. So he starts preying on hikers and campers throughout the national forests, setting elaborate traps and living in the woods. That'd be pretty cool story.

I remember seeing ads for this film as a kid. The trailer was edited in such a way as to make you think the killer wasn't a standard psycho, but some moss-covered, furry, bigfoot/swamp monster thing. Even the poster alludes to them being attacked by something from outer space. Guess someone in marketing really wanted this to be a monster movie instead of a slasher.

The Final Terror sounds like a Resident Evil style Final Fantasy Game series. That might be kind of fun if done right.

Well now we need a Bob Ross themed horror movie. "And right there, we'll put a happy little axe murderer. Right at this tree line. Or whenever you want to put it. Maybe down at the dock. Maybe hiding in the cabin. Wherever you feel, there are no wrong places. Now let's get some bright red for the blood spatter."

The movie also starred Rachel Ward, who would go on to star in films like *"Against All Odds"* (the 1984 remake of the '47 film noir: *"Out of the Past"),* *"CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS: The Discovery"* (5-time Bond film director John Glen's rival 1992 film to Ridley Scott's *"1492: Conquest of Paradise"* - where she replaced Isabella Rosselini as Queen Isabella I), and the 2001 TV film *"Johnson County War"* with Tom Berenger, Michelle Forbes and Burt Reynolds.

I also raise my hand for Adrian Zmed who not only was in Grease 2 but was Officer Vince Romano in T.J. Hooker with William Shatner for four seasons in the 80s.

Rachel Ward was an 80s staple... The Thornbirds, Sharky's Machine, Against All Odds. She became a household name after the Thornbirds miniseries, this came out later that year and if you look at the poster, her name is above eveyone else. Daryl Hannah became huge in 1984 with Splash (Bladerunner was a bomb at the boxoffice)... so she wasn't big name when this was released.

The idea of a killer murdering and stalking a bunch of campers in the woods using a homemade ghillie suit is actually very interesting and sounds cool honestly. Also, please review Planet Terror after this, just to complete your trilogy of terror here lol

Agreed, The Fugitive isn’t really like the others as it is a really well made adaptation of an old tv series.

I'm surprised there was no mention of Lewis Smith, Buckaroo Banzai's Perfect Tommy and the greaser in The Heavenly Kid.

I’ll give this movie props. It had the nerve to not only have a black character live but had two black characters and they both lived. Subverting expectations, especially for this time period.

A pretty underrated 80s slasher. Andrew Davis is an underrated director.

You could also do the post-apocalyptic sci-fi horror movie The Terror Within (1989).

The camouflage in this movie makes it my favorite of all slashers. The scene with the killer moving off the rock is amazing. I also like to think it could be a pseudo sequel to “The Prey”, even if it came out a year earlier.

originally this was titled "3 blind mice" hence the singing in he bus scene. It has several different titles associated with it .

Not gonna lie, the biggest revelation for me was that the dad from "We're not gonna take it" music video was also the Master from season 1 of Buffy.

Cindy Harrell was the girl with Metcalf in the sex pond. She was known more for modeling and was the girl in the Ray Parker Jr Ghostbuster music video. Most of the people in this went on to do bigger and better things.

I heard Disney is gonna buy the rights, cut out the gore and rename it 'SPLASH2: IN2 The Woods'...may just be a rumor though. 😜

Unless the movie takes place in Maine then the killer isn't Stephen King from Creepshow. Of course he could have wrote the movie and doesn't know it.

Personally, I thought that grainy, Texas Chainsaw Massacre-style cinematography in this movie was fantastic; super aesthetic and eerie.

Damn, the cover fooled me into thinking this would have been a monster movie.

Trilogy of Terror fascinated and terrified me when I was a kid.

Damn. I had known of this as Andrew Davis' first film. Glad to finally see it - and through your lens. But damn - that kill taking out the killer was pretty crazy well shot!! You can see that even early Davis has some skills. 🙂

I watched this a couple of years ago. Not bad. I found it refreshing that most of the characters were still alive at the end.

Yeah, I don't see what the problem is from those bleeding hearts in the 1980s. The message was clear drugs alcohol and a potential loss of one's virginity equals painful, horrifying death.

This was one of my favorite slasher films to discover. I found it at a dollar store bargin dvd bin as a double feature with Christmas Evil. Although it was titled Carnivore on the title card. The print was so dark you couldn’t tell what was happening but I loved the vibe and that shot of the killer coming out of the tree was perfect.

I didn’t realize that this film was directed by the guy who did the Fugitive. I literally saw this movie without knowing that.

I wonder if “The Burning” is up next, with Jason Alexander.

Heh... Last time I saw an open screen like that, talking about the rebuilding from salvaged footage, I was watching my Kino Lorber cut of "Metropolis." Only source I really trust for films from that period.

This survival/slasher is underrated imo. Plenty of atmosphere, good cinematography, competent characters for 80s slasher standards, cool killer suit/weapon, and the rock theme is a bop! As always, thank you for your contribution to cinema, youtube, and sarcasm!

I suddenly vaguely remember this film after seeing this scene at 1:40, just never knew what it was titled.

Curly haired guy singing in that high pitch voice has also been in other stuff. I recognize his face, just don't know his name. Apparently he's Adrian Zmed. Ah yeah, I remember now, he was the leader of the T-Birds in Grease 2.

You could totally remake this one today. Military Vet snaps and starts taking it out on the campers, one by one. You could have some really gruesome traps.

It's a shame you aren't planning a movie named terror month, I was thinking you could review The Terror staring [a very young] Jack Nicholson & [a very old] Boris Karloff. I think this was the first slasher horror movie I ever saw. And probably the first one before Scream to show that there can be more than one killer in such a movie.

I watched this one the other night when I saw you were doing it and yeah I thought it was a pretty mid slasher but did have some cool nature shots and locations

So for your information, the forest ranger trainees. Is the California conservation corps? It was established in 1978 by Jerry Brown, it’s a paramilitary youth development Corp . The motto is Hardwork low pay miserable conditions, and more the job they’re doing is salmon habitat restoration back then they thought that they had to take logs out of the river for the sounds of spawn and they found that. I pulling logs into the river was way to go. I was in it for two years. They get you up Hella early in the morning and you gotta get yourself up. You don’t got someone nice to wake you and seeing those guys work even allowed to be that slow this movie brings back memories. I never seen it good review.

I like this film. There were a lot of movies like rhis made during this tine... Deliverance, Southern Comfort, Just Before Dawn, The Burning.... Friday the 13th...etc... Thoygh, Its more of a survival film than straight up slasher movie, as you said. The fact that most of the people survive and the ending kind of make it different than many. Its fun, but its easy to see why it didn't catch on like many of the other slasher flicks of the time.

No shout out to Adrian Zmed? He got big in the 80's too, starring in 'Grease 2', 'Bachelor Party', and co-starring in the TV series 'TJ Hooker' with William Shatner and Heather Locklear.

Can you so some Tor Johnson films? "The Beast of Yucca Flats" was one of his films and it was hilariously bad. Tor Johnson was a 300 pound Swedish wrestler turned grade Z horror actor. In real life he was a great guy he often had sherbet parties at his house for all the neighborhood kids who were his fans. He was also in "Plan 9 From Outer Space".

Saw this on cable in 83 or 84 and I loved the group survival bit. The final girl while not named at that time to my knowledge was already becoming predictable.

I saw this on HBO back in the 80s. I mostly remember it for having Adrian Zmed in it, who would go on to co-star in the show TJ Hooker. I sometimes get this film mixed up with the similar Just Before Dawn. Not completely mixed up, just sometimes I remember a scene from JBD and think it was in this movie.
