BRANDY MELVILLE / BRANDY MELVILLE HAUL / BRANDY MELVILLE TRY ON HAUL / I SPENT $1000 AT BRANDY MELVILLE / CLOTHING HAUL 2019 / BRANDY MELVILLE ONE SIZE FITS ALL / WORKING AT BRANDY MELVILLE
10:31 Haul Starts
Today i'm trying out One Size Fits "Most" clothing from Brandy Melville! The whole "one size fits all" motto that Brandy Melville has adopted is seriously damaging for young peoples self esteem, and I have a lot of thoughts to cover in this video. The brand may have become popular thanks to influencers like Emma Chamberlain, but how long can they continue like this?
In this review and try on haul, you'll see a range of items from Brandy Melville 2019 (so many of which I feel as though you could find while thrift shopping...) but let me know what your favourite items were, and if you'd like to see me make a Brandy Melville vs Thrift Shopping Haul!

The fact that she covered the part about the stores sizing, reputation and such makes me very happy. Fashion is much more than just clothes, the background of it and deatils really matter and needs to be talked about in order to stop discrimination. Also this "one size fits all" thing needs to stop right now, it's horrible to say the least. People are beautiful just as they are. Never forget to love yourself, respect others and just do you boo. Nobody should be able to tell you that you aren't gorgeous, and ABSOLUTELY not a shirt in a store.

5:08 One size fits all in Asian countries is not healthy at all and no one should condone that. I’m a Chinese girl who doesn’t have the usual Chinese body shape. My weigh distributes to my upper arms, chest and hips/thighs (normally, Asian people’s weight distributes to their stomachs and cheeks), but I’m in no way overweight, just a curvier body shape. I go back to Japan and China a lot, since I’ve got family there (I currently live in Canada). And honestly, thank god my body is still quite petite where I’m not that curvy, but so many things fit so awkwardly when I go shopping in Asia, because it’s “one size”. I’ve got a friend who’s chubbier than I am, but in North American standards she would still not be considered overweight, yet she completely broke down when we went shopping in Asia, because barely anything she liked fit her. I understand the usual people in Asia are very petite, but that shouldn’t mean they should make “one size fits all” more than any other brands from any other country.

I so relate to the experience you had as a teen and the experiences of those young girls in the Facebook comments. I hate that this store exists, hate how it treats both its customers and employees. But I really appreciate the fact you spoke about that rather than leaving it as just a haul. You speaking so candidly about it just brought me to tears. Side note, I always thought it was a big store only in America, until I moved to a different area of the UK and discovered one near my house. Won’t be taking a step into there 💁‍♀️

As a woman who is plus size, I personally have no problem with a brand that chooses to be size exclusive. We do not blink an eye when a brand singularly sells plus size clothing and choosing to sell a smaller size is no different. That being said, the customer service and way this particular brand chooses to do business is extremely disappointing and it’s surprising that it continues to have so much success.

Most "plus size stores" ie Torrid and Lane Bryant being the main ones, carry a size 10-24. A size 10 isn't exactly plus sized. It would be fine if Brandy was carrying XS-L because even then MOST people could fit something. Even though I wear a 16 jeans, some of my tops I buy in anything from a S-XL because of cut and material. It's the fact that it's 1 single size. Plus size stores don't just carry a size 16 and that's "plus size". It's completely different

Girl reading those reviews from people who worked at Brandy Melville it is INSANE how similar their experience was to mine when I worked at Abercrombie & Fitch when I was 17. They claimed that they no longer hired people “based on their looks” because they’d been recently publicly exposed for doing so - but EVERY SINGLE person that worked on the shop floor was white, skinny and pretty and every guy was toned and tall. But all the people who worked in the stockroom were POCs. We were all expected to wear A&F clothing as part of our uniform BUT received no clothing allowance, were given nothing upon being hired, and our discount on clothes was only 25% excluding sale items. All my managers were in their 20s and all had absolutely no idea what they were doing. I received almost no training and yet it was my fault when I made mistakes and was berated for it. They were all incredibly rude and cliquey as well. Boy am I glad to be out of there

I worked at Hollister when I was 18 in 2008 and that was my exact experience too. I had to buy a few tank tops and a pair of shorts to wear while working. Just a small discount and no allowance to buy the clothes. At the time our dress code was white, navy and gray. Upon me leaving the company they had changed the navy to dark red. I was told that if you had a bachelors degree you would be hired as a manager. All of my managers were 22-25 year old men and all very immature.

People talk about inclusivity/average women in this case but forget there are outliers in both directions. We come in all sizes some of us are really tiny too. "Real women have curves" "We're not all 14 year old boards" but some of us full grown women have barely grown past that, and it's disheartening to feel passed over or like less of a women for not being sexy model skinny, just petite. But that's a completely different fight.

The reason "one size fits most" works out ok-ish in Japan is the way the clothing is designed. For Lolita fashion, one dress is usually 4 or 6 dress sizes via the use of sewing techniques like shirring panels (shirring is when you take a very wide panel of fabric and sew multiple lines of elastic into it so that it will expand or contract to fit the body wearing the garment). As a result, most Lolita dresses fit between a US size 2 and a US size 8 or 10. Sadly this means girls who fit into a size 0 need to tailor the dresses down and girls over a size 10 need to carefully research which brands size their dresses larger (Metamorphose tends to cut their one-size dress to be a US 4 to 14). But all of that background information aside, the moment you reduce the clothing design to not include these elastic sizing tricks, the situation suddenly does get really uncomfortable really quickly. However, the best way I think we can combat the issue really isn't to go after the companies who have decided they want a very specific customer, instead I think we need to look at ourselves and question why we project onto brands the way we do. Why are we giving up all of this emotional power to this company? Why are we letting their decision hurt us? Why are we not simply taking our money and instead supporting companies that do fit us and do cater to us? I use to also be that tween in the dressing room who did not fit Old Navy. My self image turned from negative to positive not from trying to impose or project my feelings onto a specific brand. Instead my outlook shifted by learning about business and consumer choice. If you don't fit a brand, it's not your problem or their problem. You two just don't line up. Sure, writing a one-time letter makes sense, but then you need to say; "they don't fit me, so I owe them nothing". When we raise huge tent issues around clothing brands that don't fit, we are handing over emotional power to them. We are teaching our daughters that they are not the ones in control. You are in control; you are holding the wallet. Support who fits you and don't give the emotional value to a brand that does not equally value you.

@PinkAgaricus

I'd also add support brands that cater to both genders as in the case of me I think the places where I tend to shop it's the women's/juniors section that's the problem, and those brands in the men's section fit me better because the bottoms are measured in actual measurements (inches [US]/meters [rest of the world], or is it imperial inches for that elsewhere as well?) and not seemingly random number sizes. The issue with women's/juniors clothing in general is that there are too much liberties with sizing to the point where there are whole groups of people being excluded (I think the notable one being midrange women [those in-between standard and plus size]). I think there's a point where cut and style stops being an excuse and the company making the clothing needs to be blamed, especially if there is a pattern going on there (such as very crazy vanity sizing and OSFM that aren't actually One Size Fits Most [that being what the commenter mentioned about the lolita dresses that are sewn with the sizing trick - which is why elastic is a lifesaver in this case]). I don't think the definitive One Size Fits All actually exists, it's just One Size Fits Most. Also I'm writing this as if were 2-3 years ago, not in 2022. Though I don't really think very much has changed.
@TeaCupCracked
@TeaCupCracked Год назад
@@PinkAgaricus It's cool. In the last two years I've moved from Lolita to Cottagecore/Historic sewing and learned even MOAR about fit issues and clothing construction. A fun one I've found out is if you really, really wanted to break-down how to size a bodice (the upper-half of a dress), you could (if you hated yourself) take up to 20 different points of measurement to shape the fabric around the boob. Now... Nobody does that; but if you REALLY wanted to, it is documented as having been done by some people in the fashion industry. That said, for commercial sizing it would be insane to try and utilize that level of specific detail. One way it could all eventually get fixed is if consumers placed their confidence in say, a sizing chart created by a company outside of garment-making, but still fashion adjacent. It could work like the organizations that monitor fair trade and then will give their 'stamp' for a company to then put on their project, showing they meet to approval of, or meet compliance with the sizing chart of this 'size czar' company. It would be difficult to organize, but whoever could do such a thing would be both doing a good service to the public and would eventually turn a decent profit (to make the early years of effort worth it). Lastly, I want to go back around and mention that clothes, historically, use to be much more size-inclusive. In the 18th centaury (the 1700s) clothing was highly adjustable partly because there was an extreme amount of fabric in use and because of how clothes were layered; stays (what became corsets) weren't actually tight-laced, they were highly adjustable (people who tight-laced were seen as being vain, or having body dysmorphia) and worked as a base to hold up all your other clothes; skirts were tied on so you could leave it loose or tighten it up; bodices were pinned into place (the pins were secured to the stays) and the front was usually completely open; you'd pin a "stomacher" piece into place, or the bodice would wrap around like a robe and either be tied/pinned. So basically each piece could be adjusted daily, or you could have it re-made (for cheap; labor was cheap, material was expensive) or, at worst... Buy/have made a larger/smaller-cut bodice (maybe save money by brining in an old skirt to get chopped up). This kind of adjustability carried on through the Victorians, but kind of fell apart with the Edwardians (1900s/Titanic-era/WW1) when clothing suddenly fit the body tighter/more closely and no one wanted volume. This is when women's fashion shifted to numbered sizing; previous to that shift, women also used just their measurements like men (that's why the men's pants you like are still sized like that). Now, again, going all the way back to how do we fix sizing, how should be treat companies, so on.... Yeah, it's a mess. I do agree with you at wanting to hold them to some kind of accountability, it's just that without a "size czar" I don't know what standard we can really ask them to hold to. For me, personally, in the last two years I've just gone to buying oversized and then tailoring it a bit to fit. It's really not something I'd recommend, though, and still agree with you that something needs to change.

As someone who has been on both ends of the size spectrum (a US 6/AUS 10 at my smallest and a US 14-16/AUS 18-20 at my largest) I COMPLETELY agree with you 100%. I have been BOTH the thin friend who fits into everything, AND the friend who can’t fit into ANYTHING while watching my smaller sized friends try on everything in the store. So, I too can attest to the fact that brands like Brandy Melville who promote the idea that “one size fits most” are super damaging, on a deeply personal and emotional level. Edit: if those first jeans were an AUS 6, then even at my thinnest I STILL wouldn’t have been able to fit into their clothes, even though I only weighed about 125 lbs (56.69 kg) back then. Let that sink in... even a small, healthy, in shape 125 lb/56.69 kg body is apparently still too big for Brandy Melville jeans. Un-freaking-believable.

My mother and sister would hand me a dress while I was in the dressing room simple because I knew most of the dresses wouldn't fit and didn't want to even look. I remember trying to keep from crying and being mad at them for handing me dresses that were clearly not gonna fit over my chest while the dressing room next to me had a girl my age with her mother and grandmother oooohing and awwing over every pretty dress she was putting on since they were all fitting her. Ethel I don’t even bother with looking for cute clothes to try on anymore simple because it’s so stressful, I stick to more simple comfy clothes for most days. 17 year old me would cry trying clothes on in dressing rooms. I agree that the fashion industry really does affect lot of people horribly. Quick fashion definitely doesn’t help as most places want more bang for their buck and a lot of places don’t take into account people have different shapes or are different heights. I hope you are doing well btw.

Ok, here are my thoughts: If you’re going to have a store that targets a very specific size, that’s completely ok. For example, how many dedicated plus size stores are out now? HOWEVER, don’t go saying that you’re clothes fit “most” persons. Be honest about your clothes and honest about the group you’re targeting.
@LeBlehGabrielle

I was going to say something similar. As someone that's 5'1 and petite, it's been more and more difficult to find clothes that fit me properly. I also get told "well just shop in the kids section" I'm almost 20, so I want clothes that are cute and trendy. I don't think there's a problem with only catering to a smaller size, but like you said, they should advertise what they sell rather than passing it off as "one size fits most"

Most plus-size brands offer a range of sizes though. I agree they should be more transparent about their target demographic and advertise it as such, and hey they’re a business so they can do what they want with their products, but I don’t know, them only having one size it’s kind of jarring to me, it’s not even like they’re catering to one size group (like plus-size brands or petite brands do) they’re catering to ONE size period. That seems a weird choice for them especially if you think about sales, wouldn’t it be more profitable to have three sizes (s, m, l) for example instead of just one? I don’t understand how popular they are especially because the clothes are nothing amazing or groundbreaking, like Alex said, it’s stuff you could find in a thrift shop

Only problem with that, is Brandy sells size XS/S...whereas a plus size store typically carries a size 10-24. Not just a size 10/12. That's the problem. It's ONE size. Not one range or demographic. Unless their One size actually was made to be most people like a M/L so it's over sized or fitted depending on your size then it could work. But really not "MOST" people are 00/0 sized.

No hate, but I can’t understand how she is claiming she had no idea the brand was so size exclusive and that she didn’t realize it could promote body dysmorphia or body image issues. She went shopping in the store and said you could clearly see the brands catchphrase or whatever of “One Size Fits Most” all over the clothes and store. Also wouldn’t you notice while shopping that the clothes don’t have sizes? She obviously did notice they didn’t have sizes, because she showed video of her friend looking for clothes to fit her different body type and couldn’t find any. I just felt she was contradicting herself a lot by saying she didn’t know it was a problematic company, and then later talking about how she doesn’t agree with the way the company chooses to only produce the one size. I kind of got the vibe she just wanted the clothes since they fit her and she thought they were cute, but wanted to try to cover her butt by addressing the Brandy Melville controversy. But in reality she still is promoting this company and spent $1000 on their clothing, even if she claims she doesn’t like their business practice. I also assume she’s making money off this video. She’s free to spend her money any way she likes, and support whatever company she likes. I just think it’s strange she keeps saying she doesn’t want to support them, and yet she definitely is.
@telinhajp

Exactly what I was thinking! She has a degree in publicity or marketing, I think, so that's how she gets away with it so easily, all the while, branding herself as the RU-vidr who addresses those important issues, besides the clothes. To me, that was the same strategy as the video that really made her famous, the lipstick one.

I noticed this too! I just admit to liking the clothes and buying them, but I can understand why others would feel differently. I get sized out of most stores because if vanity sizing, I don't have to worry about the clothes not fitting when I buy online, even in clothing stores that do fit they get the proportions wrong and it lays weird. She should just say she likes Brandy and move on, because she came off as verrrry fake in the intro, it was very hard to watch.

I completely 10000000% understand and agree with what the majority is saying about toxicity in brands but can we talk about people like me because i know im not the only person. please tell your children that their bodies are perfect and a size doesnt determine their worth/value/meaning, etc. these stores everyones getting mad over are the only stores where i can find jeans that 100% fit me in the right places. you can find a top or a hoodie anywhere else but its hard to find a place that sells good jeans. (All sus business practices aside obviously) While fighting for body positivity women who actually are shaped like those models and smaller get swept under the rug. I'm happy my Mother always emphasized that people like that aren't the standard of beauty (being black and ever '''pretty''' girl being white) when I was younger. it's not the fact that they sell small clothes that is toxic! of course smaller more petite girls need their clothes too and also have struggles finding properly fitting clothes! it's their marketing that is toxic, it's the "one size fits most" statement, that is the shitty part about it because for me for example, i didn't even really know about brandy melville, but if i went in and saw one size fits all and then i went to the changing room to try it on i would have an absolutely breakdown. if brandy just changed their marketing to "clothes for smaller sizes" it would be a-okay, but as it is brandy does promote body dysmorphia because of the fact that it's telling people one size fits all/most and so if you don't fit in that size then you're wrong and you don't get to have the nice pretty clothes until you lose weight

Before I write this I just want everyone to know at my biggest I was 235lbs and a size 18 us. At my smallest/currently I'm 137lbs and a size 7 us. Just so there is no confusion or accusation about any biases or "loyalties". I also have never/don't shop at brandy. Without touching on the race/employee issues (which I do not support). I just want to say so what if they only sell 1 size... 99% of the stuff on wish/amazon/ebay are all one size. Also there are plus size only stores everywhere and nobody says anything. I used to shop in them... if the clothes in a store do not fit you then don't shop there. Again I say this as someone who used to be obese... I DO NOT UNDERSTAND why when your a size 18 having a store just for you is looked at at as being game changing/heroic/gets positive national media coverage... but if a store caters to a size 4 they are encouraging body dysmorphia/eating disorders/bullying. I don't see brandy as encouraging that stuff... I see them as a plus size only store but instead of plus size they only sell petite clothes. I had a friend who was 5 foot 3 inches and weighed 90lbs. Do you know how hard it was for her to find clothes that she could wear?

I think really the issue is in the wording. I totally agree with you, I used to shop so much in kid's departments because nothing fit me nicely when I was 18 (now my boobs and butt are too big.. Smh). So a petite-focused store in itself is not the issue, it's purely the slogan. "Westerners" are a VERY heterogeneous group in terms of height, weight and bone structure. "One size fits most" would have to go after the average or median of the target group, not towards one of the outlier ranges, as Alex mentions in the beginning. This is why one size clothing is somewhat more on point in many Asian countries, not because there are no variations, but because they're overall more homogenous and one size may be more matched to an actual average. So, this brand absolutely has a right to exist (In terms of the clothing they provide), but they should be marketed as a petite brand. Claiming to "fit most" when that's factually incorrect, that's where the problem lies - and I definitely see how this perpetuates body pressure.
@makeda6530
@makeda6530 4 года назад
Thank you! It only seems to count as body positivity and inclusivity when it's showing love to 'larger' women. They bumbled with branding and service but they're a specialty store. I wouldn't shop there for a slew of reasons, but I do get tired of some arguments on body acceptance vilifying petite frames when there are just as many small women that don't fit the 'ideal'. Everyone should feel beautiful and accepted but also, not everything is for everybody. Learned that a long time ago.
