Bratislava Trams - Route 1 - Driver's Eye View. 

Bratislava and Slovakia were almost unknown to me before this visit. I came away with a very good impression of this wonderful country, with its interesting branch lines, smart ski resorts, stunning mountain scenery, beautiful towns and villages, made even more enjoyable by the friendly people I encountered.

I hope someone can answer both questions, I was told the twin gauge section was part of some future plans that are unlikely to happen now due to funding cuts.

Twin gauge section was build to get EU funding for the route (since EU wouldn't pay for single gauge rail, for some reason)

This turned out to be really memorable tour for all the right reasons. I knew very little about Slovakia before this trip, now I know it is a place I'd love to return to, the railways and trams are really fascinating with plenty of variety old and new.

It is a little unusual in Europe too.

Hi Terry, this turned out to be an excellent tour. The tram system around Bratislava uses mostly modern trams, although there were a few older ones to add interest. The driver of our tram was really friendly and helpful. I used a GoPro Hero 6 Black Edition camera, a vast improvement on previous models.

Sony make a good video camera, that's why my main camera has been a Sony for the last 15 years.

Most of the country's that were once behind the so called "Iron curtain" are scenic, reasonably priced and surprisingly modern, often just as up to date as any West European country. I hope you get there some day.

I would actually rather visit there than western europe...from what I have seen from other peoples travels, its well worth it. So I am saving. Sooner or later, and just maybe I will get a train ride!

Hi Luke, I'm glad you enjoyed it. The mixed gauge section is a mystery, laid only over the new section of track including the new "old bridge". I can only assume there is an aspiration to use standard gauge at some time in the future.

For the double gauge, they were planning to lead the train through the city towards Austria. I am unsure whether this was supposed to be connected to the network in Slovakia, or just to speed up the travel across the city.

Dual gauge was intented for future tram train system (and only junctions in the direction of proposed tram train route are built on standard gauge). However, the plans have been abandoned and further extension of Petrzalka line will only be built with narrow gauge.

Bratislava is small for a capital city, with a beautiful old town surrounded by more recent suburbs. The Skoda trams are excellent, well built, with an extremely smooth ride. There were still a few older trams in operation, I will upload another Drivers Eye video from a tour of the system in a vintage tram as time permits.

Ah, you noticed. The camera picked up tracks from a local radio station, this would have created copyright issues, so I used the soundtrack from another camera in the passenger compartment, unfortunately it had not recorded the full trip and part of it was used twice. I opted not to replace the soundtrack with royalty free music because that really upsets some viewers.

Away from route 1 there were plenty of older trams.

Hello, i'm from Bratislava. On line 1 and 3 are only new trams (30T), on line 4 are only new 29T. On line 5 you can see 29T or old T6A5, on line 6, 7, 9 29T or K2S. And lines 2, 8 are old K2S only

Tram at 7:00 was old T3, these trams were in Bratislava first and now they're not using. You can see them on special days only

I don't really know the answer, but I would guess it was to move the switch blades to a place where they were less likely to trap peoples feet or bicycle wheels. Tram switches have always fascinated me, who operates them?

@@Timsvideochannel1 Tram driver with long metal stick (i dunno exact name of that tool :D ) or they´ve got it automatic inside the vehicle and its for switching tracks

@@NiktoPH Hi, on this tram system the switches are operated by the driver from the cab, although sometimes it is necessary to operate the switches by hand using a special pole when the switch has either failed or has not been fitted with a motor because it is rarely used.

It's not a beautiful tram station, but it does the job it was designed to do.

Bratislava is one of Europe's hidden gems, Slovakia is not usually the first place that comes to mind when thinking about a European holiday, it has a lot to offer, beautiful countryside, historic cities, pretty villages, sensible prices and the people are friendly.

You've caught me out there. I couldn't use the sound for parts of the video because the conversation wasn't suitable to broadcast, so I borrowed some from elsewhere in the video to avoid using music, I'll have to be more careful next time.

I hope you get to ride the trams, maybe even the old one. It would be nice to have a propper explanation for the section of dual gauge track.

Ursprünglich war beabsichtigt, das Straßenbahnsystem mit Einer Standardspur nach Petralka und darüber hinaus zu erweitern. Als ich die Leute in Bratislava fragte, wusste niemand wirklich viel über die vorgeschlagene neue Route, obwohl mir gesagt wurde, dass dies etwas mit der EU-Finanzierung für die neue "Alte Brücke" zu tun habe. Originally, the intention was to extend the tram system using standard gauge to Petralka and beyond. Hi, you live in beautiful city and you were correct to spot the false sound. Somebody was playing the local radio station and I would have hit copyright issues if I uploaded the sound as recorded. I used the sound recorded with another camera, to try and create an authentic atmosphere.

I asked the same question and the reply I received was that the tram system was to be extended with the possibility that standard gauge trams might also use the line at some time in the future; hence part of the track is dual gauge.

Thank you, the latest addition to the system over the new old bridge is dual gauge; but unusable at crossings. I can only assume this is to allow the use of standard gauge trams if required at some future date.

Timsvideochannel1 It was meant for classic trains via integration system but it was already cancelled due to idiots and lack of money.

I don't know for sure, but I would guess it is no more than 35 kph maybe a little more on the tram only sections.

You spotted that some of the audio had been repeated, the conversation the camera picked up might have offended some people, I had to choose between music or reusing audio from elsewhere in the video. I'm pleased you enjoyed it.

@@Timsvideochannel1 Nothing is better than most autenticity. :) Every normal people that are interested in Transportation and other cultures not have problem if hear some conversation in bacground. Of course even you you not like have some conversation in your video, then some editing programs have filters that able remove voice part from video. ;)

@@ManfromStars I agree the original sound is best, but you would be surprised at how much personal conversation the camera picks up. I have tried software to remove voices with varying degrees of success, it is also very time consuming to use. I don't think there is any easy answer.

All cities have problems, as a tourist visiting, Bratislava gave a good impression.

You are correct, I have not used the original sound track because someone had a radio playing and I would have had copyright problems had I used the original sound.

I've been caught out, you are correct, I was unable to use the original sound track, so I used the sound from a second camera. I should have paid more attention to what people were saying, then I might have got away with it.

I watch and listen to RU-vid videos through headphones mainly so I pick up a lot more detail. Your video is still enjoyable to watch though.
