The game where "Pitching a Maddux" became a thing? Makes sense to me, as Greg Maddux uses just 77 (!) pitches in a complete-game win over the Cubs at Wrigley, from this TBS telecast July 22, 1997.
Just wanna swing by and say thanks for the upload. I've been wanting to do a project on this game for a long time, but only now was I able to do it thanks to your recording.
Once again, this individual wins the internet. I still remember the Sportscenter highlights of it the next day which showed every pitch in an abbreviated 60 second video and the anchor said something like "this is no exaggeration, you're seeing every one of Maddux's pitches today." It's funny too because MLB's RU-vid account lists it as 76 pitches, but Pete Van Wieren states it was 78. It's also amazing to me that he gave up a run and 5 hits while still using less than 80 pitches.
What I remember about that sportscenter highlight was during the interview clips after the highlights, somebody on the Cubs was mouthing off about how it's embarrassing because "he can't throw hard enough to break a pane of glass and you look at him and he looks like a nerd" but you still can't hit him. Well Stuart Scott had a hilarious rebuttal for this guy. While the screen showed the postgame graphics, Scott goes on this little amusing, poetic rant "Well a nerd is a square, and a square is ice, and ice is water, and water is nature, and nature is beautiful!" Stuart Scott would have none of that nerd shaming on his show, esp not at Maddux's expense. I was in stitches laughing and wondering what the hell I had just heard. If Matt Taylor can remember that sportscenter highlight like it was yesterday, please tell me you remember that part cause that was the cherry on top haha.
Somebody finally uploaded this! I always remember this game very well, and besides a few clips, I haven’t seen it since 1997! Thank you very much for uploading this!
Glad you like it! Feel free to share our channel with anyone you want -- we don't do this for glory, for renumeration, we do it because we're sure there are baseball fans like yourself, and us, who want to watch old games. We're just happy to share our collection with as many who want to watch.
Oh thank you for finding and uploading this brilliant gem by Maddux! On one of my Braves Facebook pages, this game has been brought up before. One said it was 76 pitches. But it can be concluded it was less than 80 pitches.
Technically this wasn't "a Maddux" because it wasn't a shutout, however giving up a run and still pitching less than 80 pitches is almost more impressive.
That’s not funny man…and still too soon,I’m still convinced that Fat POS had $$$$$ on the fish in that series…WORST Umpired game I’ve ever seen…it’s definitely up there with any game Angel Hernandez ever called SMH 🙄🤦🤷♂️
We don't believe so, not with the plethora of personally-recorded and uploaded games on various channels on RU-vid. One would imagine one would attract the wrong type of attention from MLB's barristers if one would be, say, selling copies of these games -- which we do not do.
Foolish Baseball fan here, too. Check out the video on this game if you haven’t already done so. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WHKo7f99kZE.html
