This is funny. Specially because I'm brazilian of russian heritage. And yes I do think these languages share many similar sounds. But portuguese is like a spanish spoken by a russian.
@JooJ As a brazilian studying russian i can confirm. Phonetically speaking they are very similar. Of course the alphabet is different, but generaly a brazilian wont have many difficulties with pronunciation. For instance the russian 'r' and 'u' sounds are typically confusing for a native english speaker, but for a portuguese speaker is just the same.

Here comes a long post but I beg of you non Brazilians to read it. For non Brazilians here goes the context: Rafinha is one of the pioneers of modern stand up in the country, and at the time was one of three hosts of the, at the time, the show that disrupted completely the format of tv comedy by always going as far as possible in provoking corrupt politicians with surprise interviews, doing very important stories about outrageous inequalities throughout the country and giving comics a platform to show their talent nation wide (being in a non cable network). The singer in question not only is married to a guy who is close to a ton of big companies, tv network owners, soccer club owners and agents, and all the ones responsible for putting money on these shows, but also the daughter of an idolized country singer, and always supported by the biggest communications empire in the country (Globo) which pretty much controls tv journalism as a whole and had in this particular show, the only ratings losses in all possible hours, days and such. The guy stood up for his right to freedom is speech but got no support from the show producers (due to popular support to the singer and threats from sponsors), the network got afraid of what Globo could do to them in branding hurtful strategies, his comic partners didn’t side with him claiming religious reasons, defending PC limits, and his co host was a personal friend of the singer’s husband. The rest is pretty much whats he said in the video. The guy got really screwed for at least some good 5 years by not being booked for stand up tours and even festivals he himself helped create and make popular. The general crowd in Brazil decided to really go against him due to media influence (even though he had previously made jokes way heavier, bolder and more controversial with most of them sharing all of it in social networks) and only recently he has been able to slowly get back on his feet by doing Netflix specials, his RU-vid channel and some tour dates. Personally, I feel ashamed as a Brazilian that we get known for being really ignorant when it comes to free speech rights while having absurdly daily corruption scandals and even common citizens atitudes and not revolting against it. We were even able to elect a new president (which we had to for the last 16 years were ruled by the same party which was responsible for the biggest corruption cases of our modern history) that is clearly unqualified to even run a gift shop in a subway station, let alone a country as big and broke(n) like ours, not to mention already being linked to corruption scandals, possible ties to militia (police officers that, when off duty, join forces to profit from all trades from black market, to bribe slum citizens to provide them “safety”, control any form of services provided inside the slums, and to top it all frequently do hits by contract), defends torture practices done during our military dictatorship times, cuts a ton of civil rights, ignores the premise of a laic administration (being a radical Christian), to mention just a few things disclosed in only 2 months of presidency. Seeing Rafinha on JRE makes me really happy for him. Hopefully now he gets his rewards after very harsh times in his career. Sorry for the long post. But this case in particular really ticks me off.
Brazil sounds like the US, in many respects. One of them is amplifying world trends, while the US amplifies European (and first world) trends, Brazil amplifies third world trends, I myself come from a third-world country and I understood everything you said and yet because Brazil is so big everything gets multiplied to insane proportions.

We say things like "The supervisor is coming, you better get your white ass back to your machine" or ill say "Aye, boss man is coming, yall better get to singing and shuffling" and we laugh our asses off. Obviously we are particular about who hears us bc some are sensitive and do not understand context. But between us 5-6 guys, its literally hilarious. Rafi Bastos (Rafinha) is one of the forerunners and one of the biggest names in Brazilian stand-up, it's good to see him gaining notoriety outside the country as well
Judges in Brazil are more concerned with suing people for shit jokes than arresting corrupt politicians, who are involved with drugs dealers. This is a fact that shows that Brazil is not for amateurs and for cool people like Rafinha. Sorte Rafinha e sucesso.

I know this is an old interview, but it just popped up on my suggestions. I just discovered Rafinha on RU-vid late last year. I'm 60 years old, a woman, and off all the stuff I've heard him make jokes about...I knew that in my generation, very few would be offended by them, but I KNEW in this current generation of cry babies who's feelings get hurt so easily, that he probably had a lot of hate directed at him. I'm very sad to hear that it even went as far as law suits...that he Lost! Unbelievable. Seriously, if I hear an off colored, misogynistic, joke... I don't get offended as a woman. It's freaking joke...get over it. And often those jokes, while sometimes stereotypical ....are funny, just because they are stereotypical and often stereotypes happen because they are based upon true patterns of behavior. :P

As Rafinha said, if now his case is being used in law schools, it’s because most judges out there can’t and didn’t studied in depth the satirical aspects of moral judgments that despite said by comedians through jokes doesn’t mean at all that they’re judging any persona or group. Actually comedians are only putting themselves where most people(including the judges) prefered not to go.
I'm also a Brazilian living in the US. All I can say is that Rafinha is giving the superficial reading of any "white dude". Racism in Brazil is deep, WAY deeper than in the US. We had 10 times more (real number here) slaves in Brazil than in the US. Just think about the fact that Brazil doesn't have "casts" like in India, but we do have more housemaids than India. And guess what? I'm talking about black and poor people. Racism is so deep, that small apartments in Sao Paulo have the housemaid room. A ridiculous small room, it is not big enough for a dog. This room is an "adaptation" of the room of slaves from the past. If you guys want to talk about racism in Brazil I believe you need to start by talking to a black person. You could talk to the RU-vidr and lawyer Silvio Almeida or to the biggest rapper in Brazil - Mano Brown. Fun fact: The Brazilian white man. They think they are white; a descendant of Italians, Germans and Portugueses. But for a white American or European, the Brazilian white isn't white, he is Latino. Most Brazilians don't understand that. Why would that be?
Like what a white Latina said: It's not race, it's ethnic background. Most people confuse this. And it's weird to me who is non-white because I know the difference between these two. It's weird why Americans can't identify the difference between the two.
I just wanna say that after this interview I´ve changed my whole idea over Rafinha. At first, following the trend, I really thought he was a bastard. After the podcast I realized that social media has a deep impact in our minds, making us believe in things in such a way that we overwhelmingly react to mundane stuff. Mistakes that we all could have done at some point become huge things online, much bigger than us. I wish you luck in the new path as a comedian in America bro.
Wish a friend of mine could think like you. I tried to talk to him about this interview and he went mad, never gave this point of view any chance. He is one of those people who wouldn't give someone who made a mistake a chance to explain himself. I got seriously disappointed.

Hello Something I have been in search for quite sometime is a connection with somebody that goes beyond vanity. It's very hard to do in this day and age. People can be, somewhat very superficial. On my quest to achieve this I have learnt a lot about human nature. It seems to me that those who are not given traits such as beauty or being wealthy are some of the nicest, kindest and generous people. While the "gorgeous" and well off seem to be the most arrogant and greedy people out there. Of course that's not to say there aren't beautiful kind people out there. I've been in the process of change for a while now and I have made some decent changes. I saw your profile and it intrigued me. I wanted to learn more about who you are and what type of path you would like on in life. Can we talk?
Rafinha Bastos deserved to lose every cent he lost. The comedian they discussed that made fun of lesbians also deserved it. You can't just expect to treat people like shit just to make other people laugh and not being punished because of it with the excuse "it was just a joke", or even worse, come with this shitty argument of "freedom of speech". You are free to say what you want. And people are free to sue you for being insulted. And then you are free to stop being a jerk if you don't like losing money.
e tem maluco chamando ele de vira-lata por falar em inglês com esse sotaque, acredita ? Este pessoal metido a intelectual são os mais arrogantes que existem!
"The best thing about this is that he got sued for his jokes, and he voted for Lula. Lula sues every comedian who says something about him. We are experiencing a dictatorship out there. Rafael Bastos supports Lula 😒 It's very contradictory."
Lula never sued anyone regarding jokes. Don't try to push defamation or injury as "freedom of speech". Also, Rafinha Bastos declared his vote in Ciro Gomes, not Lula.
It was a bad joke indeed, unlike that funny joke about "they" (I believe there is a spectrum of social genders and yet, I laughed my guts out). The difference between a good and a bad joke often is being implicit rather than explicit, meaning to move very close to the borders of political correctness. Freedom of speech alone, however important it may be, has nothing to do with the joke's quality, because then both jokes would be fine.
