Brazing Rods Challenge

In this jon boat project we'll experiment with brazing rods to get rid of 30 rivet holes. If this technique doesn't work I'll be sure to give you guys an update. I'm hoping it works but we'll just have to test it out. Once all the holes and leaks are taken care of, then the project really begins. I can't wait to see the final product of this year's project. I know it will be a better bass boat and I'll learn a lot from it. I've already learned how to use brazing rods..kinda. I can't wait to get Katrina back on the water but hopefully this time she'll be much more stable and comfortable. In the next video we'll be working on the inside of the boat. I'm thinking we'll probably be working on the floor but if not the floor then we'll be working on some decking. Thanks for watching and subscribing to my channel!

Thanks for posting this. I'm definitely no expert but I've done enough sweat fitting and soldering to see something you might want to think about. I see that at least one other person mentioned this. That is that shouldn't be heating brazing rod with the torch. The rod should be melted by the metal you are brazing, not the torch. So, what you should probably be doing is heating the metal that you are going to repair up while periodically testing it with the brazing rod to see if it's hot enough to melt the rod. When doing this, momentarily move the torch away from the area you are repairing. When it's hot enough, keep removing the torch as you apply more brazing rod. The way you are doing it, the torch is melting the rod and that would cause a poor bond to the metal you're repairing. It looks like you actually did get decent results but the method you used could produce brazing that won't hold. Again, thanks for posting this.

Bob Miller I should’ve mentioned that but the aluminum boat I have is so thin it just wouldn’t melt the rods before melting itself. I had to find a sweet spot to a get good mold but also not destroy the boat. What I learned is that if you preheat the boat to the point you see it swell or deform in anyway it was hot enough and worked out in my experience. FYI I used the boat a lot last year and all “brazing rod patches” are still solid including the one JB Weld. Also for anyone reading this, thanks for letting me share my experiment always practice safety when doing projects at your own risk and research.

I hey I'm getting ready to patch some holes in my jon boat but I didn't see what size rods and what type you used. I've read that there is different types that melt at different temperatures and I want to make sure I get the right kind without melting my boat. which did you use? size and type?
@DoingStuffChannel
@DoingStuffChannel 7 лет назад
mason eshraghipour just used 1/8 aluminum Hobart brazing flux. Has a 700 degree F melting point. If you continuously check to see if the rod will melt by continuously taping or rubbing the boat with the rod you'll be fine. The rod should melt way before the boat.

Heat changes the molecular properties of aluminum greatly = CRACKS ! Simple fix, for leaking rivets..1. Identify the rivet leaking, and mark it. 2. When boat is on trailer, have a pal hold small mall on the rivet head (under boat). 3. Use a flat punch and ball peen hammer on the same rivet (inside) DONE ! I've been making riveted hull's water-tight in S/E Louisiana, long before the welding stuff came along.

The irony in school/training. Nearly all education and training has little to no use in the real world. Although the irony doesn't end there. With over 12 years hands on experience in Military Aviation I had to attend a school where I taught my fellow students assisting the instructor to become "civilian certified". Having a certification/degree can get you very far but when it comes down to getting things done experience always saves the day. So there's huge problem there on top of the fact that soooo many people are in debt for an over priced waste a time. I hope one day we have leadership that will address these obvious problems...

A year later, did the brazing rods fix hold up in the longer term? Also, next time, don't be scared to pull the heat/torch back away instead of holding it on the same spot at the same distance. Brazing/welding/soldering is all about controlling the heat.
@DoingStuffChannel
@DoingStuffChannel 3 года назад
Yep they all held up! The only leaks since was from the boat plug being loose. The boat was perfect for the area I use to live in. Now that I live in a different place I'm in the market for a bigger boat with an outboard to fish most public waters.

After you clean up the surface . Come back and scratch the surface with a really coarse wire brush and scratch the surface good . Hot liquid aluminum need something to grab or like you say ...... it will slide right off on smooth surface .

Don't use the flame to melt the rod; use the heat in the metal to melt the rod. Aluminium is a very good conductor of heat so give it time to heat up the boat.
@DoingStuffChannel
@DoingStuffChannel 5 лет назад
This is something I heard from several sources prior to my experiment. I did do that at first but what I noticed is that when heating the boat to that point it would cause the metal to deform/bubble/warp. Luckily I was able to find a happy medium of heating the boat and rod for success. Thank you!
