BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) -Brazos County commissioners are proposing a one-cent increase in the property tax rate as they work to close a significant budget shortfall for the upcoming fiscal year. The move comes after a contentious debate over the FY 2025 budget, which has highlighted deep divisions among the commissioners and concerns from local residents about rising costs.
During a meeting on Tuesday, commissioners discussed the proposed tax rate of $0.4197 per $100 of property valuation, a one-cent increase from the current rate. The increase is intended to fund the multi-million budget shortfall and provide additional funds for upcoming capital projects. However, the proposal has sparked a heated exchange, with some commissioners advocating for the increase while others push to maintain the current tax rate, also known as a no-new-revenue rate.
