What made BREAD SO GREAT WAS : Unique sound that no one else had. Also David Gates awesome song writing skill. His voice was simply "OUT OF THIS WORLD!"

One of my favorites by Bread is "The Guitar Man". Sadly, as I've gotten old and can finally go see the old bands I loved back in the day, sometimes I am reminded of that song

I’m 55 and so glad I got to see almost all of the great performers and groups. I got to go to Woodstock with my parents, but I was only 3, so does that even count? Be glad you’re “old” now, I would never want to be in my teens or 20’s nowadays considering how horrific the music is. I’d rather set myself on fire than go to a rap or pop concert. Just imagine all the great singers and groups we can go see when we die, there’s so many great artists that are deceased they must have some great concerts on the other side!

Every time I hear their Everything I Own; I break down and cry. He wrote it in honor of his father, and it makes me think of my own father, who died way too young.

Such in innocent song. Think of the way things sometimes play out now, with the "If I can't have it/him/her, no one will" mentality of some people. I'm sure they existed back then, but not on the scale they seem to now

My older sister interested me in music when I was 8 years old and she had me listen to her Best of Bread record. As soon as I had my own record player (when I was 11 I received a record player for Christmas)I bought the Best of Bread and another artist she introduced me to-Best if Jim Croce. Both were amazing.

@@daseguin My interpretation of the lyrics says that HE was hers until she found love elsewhere. The song ENDS with the other guy being her husband but he wasn’t at the beginning! Lyrics can be interpreted to mean whatever you believe. I’ve been listening and singing Bread songs for 50 years or so. We choose our own interpretation Dave. You are welcome to yours.

@@Peter-oh3hc A fair reading of the lyrics is that he found the diary, confronted her, she denied it but he assumed they would be married, but he found the diary again & realized that she was in love with someone else & she then married that man, not him.

I saw David Gates in concert on 2-25-2000 in Minacqua, WI and after performing this song he said to the audience "Maybe I should have wished a house would fall on them." True story!
