Hi Jon another really great video. As a skint teenager i used to slow bake whole slices in my mum's Aga and pulverise them with a rolling pin! My section on the GUC is always heavily coloured and bread works better than any other bait most days. I produced a video using the short pole, top 3, and had a 4lb plus fish second put in and loads of good skimmers on a 7mm punch, i think, and really sloppy crumb, got a lot of views,40,00 plus. Of course not being a 'known' match angler a lot of people missed the video! Kindest regards Bill

Very very similar to what i do. Anybread I have left over, I put it in a baking tray with the light/sun having a bash of its Wordly gifts on it. Fill the tray up...stick them in a bag... and continue, the bag goes in my spare room and just does what ever spare room magic does. ( by the way, this is weekly). Anyway... when the time arrives... the bags come out as long as they are over 3 months gone. I then spend a shit load of time with two coffee grinders giving it hell...regarding the oven baking. I use this when I've perhaps a lot of bread in my possession. and not quite stale.. so i rip it apart, give it some hell and put t on the lowest shelf on the lowest heat whilst I'm Netflixing...switch oven off... get up, get ready for work and just check bread.... spend a minute or two seeing whats what and putting it in trays and leaving it out for the suns rays getting to it.......once again it goes into the coffee grinder and I get dust out of it 999% of the time. Sieve it... pot it in 25kg barrels and that is the GB I use at all times... whatever the venue. Most of the time its River fishing..in fact it's nearly all...but....you can't beat...making your own bread crumb... it's just fun and very so pleasing. I can't emphasise anymore than what Jon has said...it's your bread...you know whats in it ...you can read the ingredients from the packaging as what is in it...I prefer the saltiest breads going, salt is a must in my opinion in winter. especially in cheese paste....I'll shut up now.

The reason this does not bind is that baking takes out the gluten in the bread.This is how we used to make "proper" bread paste years ago.If you get your baked slices and put them in some muslin or cotton cloth and soak the bread.Then if you start to squeeze out the water,after a bit you will get cracking proper bread paste.However it is soft and thats how to roach like it and tench etc.We caught stacks on this back in the day.

Better way to do it Jon is to cut the bread into one inch squares. Then place in the oven for about 15 to 20 minutes until all the moisture is out of the bread and it’s crispy to the touch. Then put it into the blender for a minute and you will have perfect breadcrumbs and no lumps.

Absolutely brilliant video John.Must admit don't do punched bread fishing over liquidised bread for roach( used punched bread for carp)at all but really enjoyed that vid and loved how the bread worked in your tests.Just wondering how it would work mixing it up with other gtoundbaits to catch big skimmers/F1s etc ,or would it pull in to many small roach etc which you wouldn't want when match fishing in commercials.Thanks for the tip.cheers.
@JonArthur
@JonArthur 2 года назад
Hmmm in my experience on a lot of commercials you’ll get lots of tiny roach on bread. But on one venue I fished I had a great run catching f1s on it and way way back in the day I used to bag up with carp at Makins on bread over bread feed. I think there’s definitely still some mileage in using it though…

The reason the white bread sticks together is that it's not cooked properly, bread The's days the way they bake bread is not the same as when we were kids 30+ years ago. If you mix beadfeed from the tackle shop, it's like glue after a few minutes.

Hello Jon, enjoyed the video. A canal related question rather than on bread. Uder what circumstances on a canal (where a pole can reach any area) would you use a waggler in preference.
@JonArthur
@JonArthur 3 года назад
If it was a match there are only two situations for me. Firstly, if there is too much traffic behind you such as cyclists and joggers. Some venues I have fished you have no space behind or any time to ship back level with the towpath. Another reason is speed as sometimes casting a little waggler can be faster than shipping in and out. A long whip could be another option, but only if you are only expecting small fish. For out and out pleasure though, without any competitive element, it's hard to beat the enjoyment of fishing with a rod and line and a little waggler, as I've shown on one of my earlier vids.

Hi, thanks for your video. Total beginner to course fishing so wondering if there would be any advantage to adding any additives to this mix or is it good enough as is ? Thanks for any thoughts. Cheers Bob

You can try, but bread in itself is the best attractor. I've added fenugreek and similar spices in the past

I get the same effect by blizting it in a blender and then put it in the air cupboard for a week.

Do you think it's worth trying putting a bit of black bait dye in the crumb on those tricky winter days Jon?
@JonArthur
@JonArthur 2 года назад
Honestly no, fish love bread and know what white bread feed is and eat it readily in gin clear water. Some people even increase the white cloud with additives. It is such a weird phenomenon why we all swear by black/dark groundbait in winter, yet happily use white punch crumb, but both certainly work well in clear water.

@@JonArthur cheers Jon, fishing is full of these type of contradictions, love it but it does my head in 🤣

Interesting that it doesn’t bind... I often use panko which is also a toasted bread crumb and it binds quite well...

I've got some panko crumbs in the kitchen cupboard but never tried it for fishing!

How will Polly make any money now John? Just as a footnote, I`ve found that bread only goes mouldy if it`s kept in the bag, so what I do is tear it up and put it in a bucket on top of the bait fridge. It dries out rock hard, then when the bucket`s full I toast it in the oven like you in 2 or 3 trays and coffee grind it. I often get a kilo bag full out of a bucket of scraps using less electricity. We`ll put Sensas out of business at this rate...............

Think my mice would love it if I left mine on the bait fridge, but that’s still great advice. 😂👍

The biggest benefit has to be that it doesn't fill the fish up like liquidised bread does.

Thats certainly one of them. I just like the fact I can knock some up in seconds and it keeps for ages.
