Thanks for sharing this info, when you put on brand new strings just to sound good for a gig you're in for a surprise. This is the way to keep that guitar in tune. Here I am an old dog learning new tricks.👍

It does make sense. Warming the strings will help speed up the process of breaking them in. I am curious how this trick affects the capacity for elastic deformation. I would imagine that the overall lifespan of your strings would be diminished. It seems like a very useful technique for emergency situations like you described, but you are most likely accelerating the onset of plastic deformation which in this case means another broken string.

It’s funny, after this video I used these strings for a couple of months no problem. Then I put on a fresh set (without a blow dryer) and within a few weeks a string spontaneously broke…

@@TheVersatileGuitarist Perhaps it helps then. Sadly it would be expensive and time consuming to test it extensively. In theory it would be better to warm strings to facilitate the stretching while breaking them in. An example might be how warm rubber bands will stretch and cold rubber bands will break easily.

Would love to see you playing a gig. Any possibility you record one and upload?

Not a fair test: the "hairdryed" guitar had several retunes, the other did not. You need to retune BOTH guitars at the same time but only hairdry one. And then see what they're like after a few minutes playing.

Doesn’t every guitarist already know the answer to this? You’ll be tuning and tuning and re-tuning for days and days, and that’s the point. I recorded this five days ago and the blow dried guitar is still completely in tune.

@@TheVersatileGuitaristMy method is to tune 'g' a semitone sharp, 'b' a tone sharp and 'e' (yes you've guessed) 3 semitones sharp. Leave for ten minutes. Retune downwards and you're good to go. (Ps for some strings pretuning 'E' and 'a' a semitone high helps. Never tune 'd' sharp as its tension is always very high to start with).

I have always tuned my guitar sharp with new strings (much higher than you do) when I put the guitar away. I still find myself having to tune my trebles up over and over again for days on end

@@TheVersatileGuitaristOoh err.... now I'm thinking there's something else at play. How's this: changes in temperature and humidity badly affect nylon strings. As I no longer gig, my guitars are permanently stored and played in a temperature controlled (20 degrees 24/7/365) and humidity controlled (47.5%, via a very large humidifier and a dehumidifier!) room. So I guess I'm not having the problem you - and others - have. Well, it's a theory !
