Listen from 13:15 to bypass the talk and intro stuff and hear this instrument well played. I love the sound of the lowest "harp" string. The timbre of the harp compliments the acoustic guitar very nicely. Beautiful sound!
@@dimitriospapadimitriou2498 to some. Some people geek about guitar brands and builders than the others so I think it's partly due to that :D If it weren't for a few names like this one on youtube I probably never would've known what that PRS thing stands for I mean
Two of my favorite guitarists that do RU-vid. You should collaborate on something. I'd like to see a harp guitar collab then an 80s song collab like your Hollywood Drive 1984 album.
I hung in until around 13:00 and finally got to hear it played brilliantly! I have never seen one of these instruments before and you did it proud! Thanks for posting. It looks to be beautifully made with a real artisan touch and can be a treasured heirloom for generations to come. And the deep tone and those wonderful harmonics took it into the clouds! Cheers 👍😎🇳🇿🎸
No, I love it! I’m a 68 year old former drummer/percussionist who was in a number of rock bands in the late 60’s, 70, 71. Unfortunately I had a catastrophic accident in April of that last year which left me unable to continue my musical life apart from listening…. I hope you continue to let us follow your progression with the instrument. Rodney Davenport…. Go Braves!
Sorry to hear about your accident. Making music is so important to me that I couldn't imagine having it taken away. But I guess that's just life and we are not in control of it to a large degree. But you still have your ears for listening, and that's a blessing.
That piece that you played at the end sounded so beautiful. I can only imagine how incredible it will sound when you have fully mastered this unique instrument. The sound is magical, haunting in a good way.
Dude splurge on an SE (Student Edition). I may be biased but pick up a used Custom 24 on Reverb/Ebay for $400-500. I was shocked how goodvit was with a Custom 24 I bought a Torero which features a Floyd Rose, Ebony fretboard (NO inlays), binding on the body and fretboard, and is mated with an EMG 81/85 set of pickups, I got an aqua one used for $600! I had a 1980 Les Paul Deluxe which I couldn't bare to keep when I got an offer of $2000 for it. Honestly my 2010 Custom 24 and my Torero sounded 90% and 95% as good as my LP, different tonally but "as good overall", so my Black Beauty went bye-bye!
@@Axe_Slinger +1 for the SE recommendation! I sold an LTD Axxion and replaced it with a Holcomb SE - such a fantastic guitar! I too just parted ways with my ‘72 Les Paul Custom (‘54 Black Beauty Reissue), but the replacement with be a whole lot more modern. I feel bad low key trashing LP’s after having been a Gibson guy for 25 years, but my playing has moved into a different space. I am much more drawn to the modern approach to building & most importantly: the modern sound. 🤘🏼😑🤘🏼
If you want the American PRS experience, though, get an S2 used. You won’t be disappointed. They’re not too expensive. I don’t own one (I have a CE 24), but I’ve played some and they are very nice! Definitely would buy one if I was on a search right now and my budget was limited.
It's just an acoustic/electric guitar and an acoustic/electric bass coupled. It sounds good because of the pickup(s?) and the delay he's using. He can play, but any gat would sound as good through the same setup.
Fell in love with this instrument 35 years ago watching to Micheal Hedges play one on VH1, Immediately went out and bought his "Live from the Double Planet" CD. The sound still gives me chills.
Strangely, nobody here in the comments (that I've seen) has mentioned the groundbreaking work of Michael Hedges, perhaps the most innovative acoustic guitar player of our times. Sadly passed and far too young. He played one of these and did it justice. Here is Michael in 1986 playing Because It's There. He was one of a kind performer, player and man. I had the pleasure of driving him from Chicago Area to Milwaukee for the Inaugural Fingerstyle Guitar Festival in 1986, I believe.
I agree. I think it's pretty weird no one's talking about Hedges here. I'd wager he's the premier player of this kind of guitar. His hammer-on technique really opened it up.
I am 67, always loved trying different instruments. I try to learn something new every day. Today I learned about the harp guitar. Thank you. Really enjoy your style.
I can only imagine turning up to an open mic night with one of these. Every guitarist in the audience does a double take and asks 'wtf is that' before turning to their bass players and saying 'you're fired'.
I watched because I saw Michael Hedges in his prime in concert twice. Bought most of his albums. Cried when he had his accident. I haven't heard anyone play as beautifully since. Good luck.
My experience mirrors yours. I actually met him the second time i saw him. He wrote down the tunings for Breakfast in the Field for me! An alien musician! Strange cat, but most geniuses are right?
This was incredible. I'm glad RU-vid suggested this video. Your attitude about learning a new instrument is admirable. This is the first video from your channel I've seen and you have a new sub. 👍
@@Bad.Rabbit For someone good. I suck at setting them up which i've actually just got my first guitar with a floyd rose so i'm not really good at it yet especially changing tuning
@@aidanbouw5224 Lol I know that I'm saying when I changed strings I decided I wanted to change tuning so I have it set up for D standard that's the only turning I have it set with.
I see stringed instruments and I play. In front of me hanging on the wall are a three-string mountain dulcimer, four string ukulele, five-string banjo, 6 string Les paul, four string tenor banjo, J bass and I'm now wanting to get a Harp guitar thank you.
I play bass but I am really enjoying your channel. This instrument sounds beautiful. I have played bass guitar fro decades and have recently purchased a NS WAV5 electric upright bass. I'm 67 and my left hand went through some serious changes for the first couple of months. BUT NOW I can rip on it and I'm loving it.
My family and I are musicians. This instrument defies descrition. The music it produces is - WOW. I sent the video to my sister who is the guitarist in our family. I am just a pianist.
videos like this help my confidence times a million. over the last few years I have chosen to pick up lesser played instruments and do what I can, it's cool to watch someone with massive talent do the same and figure out how they can make something work for them.
13:16 - The sense of loneliness mixed with darkness yet shocks of hope in this piece made me close my eyes and imagine sitting by an open window on a rainy night with a drink and a sketchbook. My god, the beauty and atmosphere of the instrument and the music you created with it...
It's a visually stunning instrument the first time you see one. It's not like anything you've ever seen before. But the sound is even more stunning. It must have been a real genius that created it originally.
Lost my mind watching a video of Michael Hedges play one of these in the late 80's. Watched Andy McKee play the same harp guitar last year(he has a whole story of how he ended up with Hedges' guitar). Those vids are worth searching for and watching. . .
Dude.... That piece you played at the end was simply mesmerizing. I don't know what style you call it, but it sounded and felt like "free-flow". I absolutely love that type of single-instrument play. Breathtaking.
Sounds great. I just picked up my Harp Guitar and it's different, but well worth the experience. I've been playing for over 50+ years and because of Jamie Dupuis's Harp Guitar videos I finally said I should learn to play one and pulled the trigger.
Decades ago in the 1970's, Michael Hedges recorded an album using the harp guitar - he was an amazing talent. RIP Michael Hedges, you are not forgotten.
Everytime I hear a harp guitar it brings chills up my spine. I cant wait to hear you become inspired and look forward to what you create with this beautiful masterpiece.
First time viewer. I don't know what to say. That was absolutely amazing. Ethereal. The harmonics, bass and chords just transported me somewhere else, somewhere totally nice. Amazing the treasures you can find falling down the YT rabbit hole. Also have to say the style of the video itself is completely refreshing. BRAVO TYLER!!
What a truly gorgeous instrument! The resonance is lovely and deep, and I like your approach to learning to play it jn a way that suits you. I am listening using a samsung tablet and excellent sony headphones, and I cannot believe how awesome your music sounds to me. I did not even know such an jnstrument existed. Thank you.
Psalm 144 I will sing a new song. Upon an instrument of ten strings I will praise you oh God! There are many mention in the bible about string instruments giving praise to God. Direct your talent to God and see it explode !
Andy McKee, Michael Hedges, etc... amazing stuff can be written with this instrument. And speaking from experience the sound of this thing is INSANE in real life. Not even comparable listening to it digitally
@@ironmonkey1512 Yep. I'm 50+ now and Hedges was one of the best players I ever saw live. His LP "Watching My Life Go By" was played constantly in my dorm the year it came out, but the first two records are undeniable classics. Such a tragedy.
I sang in an amateur rock band, but we had a seriously skilled kid on lead guitar. PRS comes back to the green room after one our sets (didn't even look at any of the rest of us) and talks the kid up about his music, plans, future interests, technique, shakes his hand and leaves the room. The kid looks at the rest of us and says "Who was that?"
I woke up at like 8 this morning and hearing the time-lapse of you tuning the guitar made me laugh for a solid 5 minutes, I don't know why but it was just the funniest thing to me
@@user-kg1kx5kt7t Just searched that and damn dude, that was awesome af, harp guitar sounds so amazing...like an accoustic with your own bass built in pretty much lol
Never knew of a Harp Guitar till now, saw it come up in the what's next video lineup, I had to have a listen, I was amazed at how beautiful it sounds. The last couple of minutes of you playing was spectacular, the sound is something I could listen to all day.
That was one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard you play - it was totally mesmerizing and a totally new sound to me - thanks for sharing that - made my evening !!
Michael Hedges made that thing sound incredible! Miss that guy. He was a legit one man show. His Comfortably Numb and Watchtower covers are legendary. Dude could sing too. Crazy talent.
I love the smile I got when I heard it was little wing haha. Jamie Dupuis has made me want to buy one ever since he uploaded his first few videos on RU-vid. I hope you've seen him, if not check him out!!
What a beautiful piece of wood and gorgeous instrument. This was a lot of fun and inspiring watching you try something so new to you and making such progress. I remember seeing Michael Hedges for the first time playing his harp guitar. I don’t think I’ve seen anyone else play one since he died. Thanks for the nostalgic flashback.
Never in a million years did I think that I would hear a harp guitar rendition of little wing... and holy crap am I in love with it! Been wanting one of these instruments for years, and that might be the kick I needed to finally get one
That's pretty cool watching you get introduced to a new instrument. I don't play an instrument now, but others many different forms of music. This could be interesting to check back with you in a while.
Roy Williamson and Ronnie Brown, playing as the Scottish folk group The Corrie’s, played custom instruments they called combolins for years in the 1960’s & 70’s. One had base strings like the one you show here. The other had sympathetic strings a la an Indian sitar. Beautiful sound that goes so well with old folk fusion.
Anyone interested in harp guitar I recommend Antoine Dufour and his pieces called Paroxysm and Startrails. He is an amazing fingerstyle guitarist and does amazing work with this instrument. Also Tyler, beautfiul harp guitar and great sound :) Thanks for sharing!
