I've wanted to explore The Maze of Canyonlands for a long time, so I finally planned out a long trip to explore the area. Unfortunately underestimating what looked like an easy trail and overestimating my tires added a little shakeup to my plans.

Those photos at the panorama camp were absolutely stunning! You captured all the golden light and contrasting shadows perfectly. Calendar shots. Now I've got a new place to put on my bucket list. Thanks!

Nice video! My wife and I just returned from another trip to Canyonlands (Island in the Sky). We had originally planned to venture into the more remote areas (like the Maze or White Rim Road) on this trip. Just like you, we ended up with a flat Duratrac tire on our truck, and got stuck driving around on our marginally adequate spare. Fortunately for us it happened on the very first day, at our first camp, before we committed to any 4WD roads. But, it sure sunk our plans for the week, as we weren't about to venture into the backcountry without a spare tire!

Wow, great video. I really like your mix of Google Earth and your labeling in the photos & panoramas. My Mom spends alot of time in that region and I join her every year or so. I can't wait to forward your videos on to her. Our last trip to the area was coming in from the North but we didn't go much past the Ranger Station at Hans Flat as we had no permits and had a dog. We hit it about 5pm and only had an hour or two of daylight left.

Want to get to the Doll House? Try a 5 day canoe trip from Mineral Bottom to Spanish Bottom and a moderate climb out of the canyon. No need for a spare tire or spare key. Plenty of great scenery along the way.

Did the same to a tire in Great Basin Park in Nevada at 7000 feet. However, in this rental there was only a donut. Turned out the nearest tire shop open on a Saturday afternoon was 183 miles away in Nephi UT. Hertz emergency service was beyond useless so it was me and asking the locals. So, giving up on Great Basin and with no idea where to find a new tire (or exchange the rental) it was 3 hours on US 50- The Loneliest Road in America -on a donut. Good way to reopen your ulcer.

Man...that sucks. You made the right call to head back out though. I had that happen near Bishop CA. After that I carry two spares.

Would you say the trail leading to Panorama Point was the easiest? I want to visit that camp spot but I'm not sure how bad that trail is. I think if your stocked Tundra made it, I can probably make it too.

Exact same thing has happened to me and my Duratracs..... several times. Wonder why it's always the passenger side front?

great video! i'm interested in the tundra because of toyota's reliability and the spaciousness of a full size pick up truck. width and wheelbasewise, do you think the 2nd gen tundra will make it through elephant hill/devil's kitchen in canyonlands np, and imogene and black bear passes in the san juan mountains?
@exploresouthwest
@exploresouthwest 3 года назад
I've actually wondered about those same trails myself. I've done all three in the past with a shorter wheelbase, but never in the Tundra. Also it was about 2 decades ago so I don't know if the trails have gotten worse. I have seen other people do Elephant hill in vehicles larger than the Tundra so I think you'd be good there but might need some undercarrage armor and careful driving over some of the obstacles. Wider vehicles have been through Devils Crack. Imogene wasn't too tough and I'm sure is doable but might need careful driving. Black Bear Pass my biggest concern is the switchbacks heading down at the end. Clearance and capability wise I think the tundra is capable of all 3 but the long wheelbase is the big concern.

That truck wouldn't make it to the Doll House anyway...Tea Pot hill and the Double Drops would have had you pinned if not areas by the Mother and Child

Agreed. These tires finally wore out and I replaced them with BFGs and I love them. I've never had problems with the BFG all terrains and they're so well suited to the southern Utah landscape.

Could a dual sport motorcycle make it to panoramic point from the ranger station? My jeep is my daily driver and I didnt want to break it
@exploresouthwest
@exploresouthwest 3 года назад
I think the motorcycle could make it but the rough spots would have you bouncing around quite a bit. But you'd be a bit more maneuverable to steer through a slightly less bumpy path than the truck which pretty much just have to aim uphill and crawl so I think you'd be ok. It would just be slow going like any vehicle. And a lot of time standing and letting the bike bump and roll under you. I imagine it making it but it being a very physically and mentally exhausting ride from picking your way through the rocky bits.

Is that airport tower just below the island in the sky title ? Or is that just part of panorama point ..
@exploresouthwest
@exploresouthwest 3 года назад
The close rock that is still in sunlight is part of Panorama Point. The distant horizon past it is pointing almost perfectly to the Green River Overlook on Island in the sky. The rocky numb on the horizon is the hill next to the overlook. In the shadows just down and to the left of the numb is Candlestick Tower.

What was your tires pressure at when you got the pinch flat?
@exploresouthwest
@exploresouthwest 3 года назад
I think it was about 15-18psi mostly to absorb the bumps more than for a need for traction. Pretty low but I've been down to 10-12 psi on other brand tires and never had that problem.

@exploresouthwest
@exploresouthwest 3 года назад
It was based off Goggle's Picasa photo storage. But Google has since ended Picasa support, so I don't know what complications that may have caused behind the scenes.

Those that do this sort of thing in the Owyhee canyonlands of Idaho, consider two spares absolutely obligatory. With only one, if you lose a tire, you're through. As happened here.
@w9jim
@w9jim 3 года назад
OK, I wouldn't call that a "breakdown." Also, why the heck didn't you have a spare to match your other tires. Lastly, you can plug a sidewall - and they hold and last quite well. I've had 5 plugs in a sidewall and ran it in the dez for days. May not be the best solution, but it's better than no spare tire!
@Jeeps1
@Jeeps1 2 года назад
why do you have a doughnut for a spare in that type of situation?
