This is maybe the ONLY scene in the entire film where Travis seems like a 95% normal guy. Like, sure, he's still a little bit weird and awkward, but he plays the role of concerned older brother very convincingly. Every other interaction he's had with people throughout the film always had a hint of something darker just under the surface, but this was a surprisingly gentle and touching moment in such a tragic film.

Every time I watch this scene I'm just astonished at the sheer skill of Jodie Foster. I mean, she was like, 12 years old here, and her performance is so incredibly natural and understated that she hardly appears to be acting at all. Just brilliant.
The line You're his little piece of chicken was ad lib. Fosters laugh was genuine because she thought it was funny and it was the first time she experienced a non scripted line. She thought she screwed up the scene, but the word cut never came so she continued after her laugh.
The way De Niro stumbles over his words, whether he's acting or just bad at remembering his lines, it comes out so authentic. And Jodie at just 12-13 carries so much charisma in this scene, I could see grown young women at the time wanting to emulate her mannerisms and personality.
I watched an interview with her on here recently. She says Deniro phoned her and asked her to go into town and hang out so they would be comfortable with each other. They did that several times and she said he was a man of few words and she'd just act like a twelve year old and mess around a bit and chat with strangers etc. Deniro later made her do the scene over and over and throw in a bit of improvisation. He was a good teacher and that all produced this great scene.
Foster has always had something about her. I think she's under rated and perhaps the fact she seems pretty reserved and private has denied her some of the much deserved credit.
This film is about a lonely man who many people would dismiss as a weirdo, which makes it all the more touching that Iris feels comfortable and safe enough around him to want him to go with her.

70’s 80’s 90’s 00’s had the best movies, now whenever i watch movies from the last 10 years its full of CGI crap. But hey the dweebs probably enjoy it.
That died when people flocked to see Independence Day. Mike from RedLetterMedia was entirely correct in that movie was a watershed for big, stupid blockbusters. It's all been downhill since then.

He’s not a hippy, he said he doesn’t get along with those people. At least back then that was a hippy thing. I can relate to him. I’m the same way when people are talking about apps and TikToks.

Saw Jodie Foster in an interview saying that before they filmed, De Niro would take her to lunch and say literally nothing until she got bored and started looking for other things to do. I think that's why she has that genuinely adorable laugh in this clip. She was totally at ease with him by the time they filmed the scene.
There's a profound beauty in Taxi Driver, with Travis's journey as he grapples with his inner demons, specifically PTSD and disassociation. Amidst a world tainted by corruption and sin, he finds solace in helping a young girl who seems lost in this dark realm. She becomes his anchor, representing purity that he's determined to shield from the harsh realities of society's decline, both for her sake and his own. Travis is acutely aware of his own descent into hopelessness, and this awareness fuels his determination to prevent her from becoming another casualty of the grim environment they inhabit. She's the only thing that makes sense in his madness.
When she was laughing at the end she reminded me of a young Dakota Fanning at that same age. Blonde, blue eyes, and Dakota was always laughing and giggling in her interviews.
He's taken on too many roles that are beneath him imo. Fortunately, unlike popular music stars, the potential for another stunning performance is always there with actors.
Jodie Foster was incredibly charming and cool too,the glasses added style to her character. Amazing performance from a very young age, Jodie was amazing and so perfect for the role.Travis was a good person,a renegade with good intentions to stop that poor teenager from being exploded. It shows some humanity lighting in those dark sick souls nowadays
Huge props for DeNiro for being a good mentor to Jodie Foster... her acting talent as a 12-year-old is really amazing and I remember how awkward I am towards everyone at that age
Must be over forty years since I saw this. I see it clearer and it's outstanding what great actors these two were then. It would be good box office to get them together again.

To name more: Tangerine, Room, Paddleton, Aposile, I could go on for hours but these are in my list of the top movies of the last decade, sure they are mostly smaller movies but they are there.

Travis who is depicted as a character that really can’t communicate with the outside world being a Vietnam veteran and trying to escape reality by driving the Cab at night; he sure Can communicate in this scene. Maybe Deniro loved Jodi’s Natural acting and just add libbed most of this.

In this scene you can guess Travis was a normal man, no mental things. But after war he was disturbed with all the horrors and become the man we see in the film.
