Breaking a horse to work for the first time. This is day 8, and his first day in the lines with another horse actually pulling something. He is still a stallion, so he is a lot more challenging than geldings or mares.

While this method may have worked in this case, I wouldn't recommend it. Desensitizing the horse to the harness definitely should come before the hitching, he was relatively cooperative, but he could kick over the traces, jump over the pole, and cause a lot more trouble. Hitching up with an older experienced horse is, of course, a good approach. With a bit more patience we might get more dependable horses!
This was not Duke's first day in harness or in the lines. Please feel free to post videos of YOUR horse farming activities. Some horses are easy to break. Duke was the worst we've ever had, and the only safe place to place him was an Amish feed mill as a turnstile horse. It was that or the kill auction.
I've broke mules and horse's most of my life and what there's men are doing is exactly what my grandpa showed me to do, hook the unbroke horse in beside a good broke horse and take off, they ain't a whole lot they can do then, good job boys, glad to see some people still know how to break a horse, they ain't but one way to do it and that's just slap on the Harness and take off like a wild hog as grandpa would say,.. nicely done boys 👍✌
This was actually day 8 of his training. He would have killed us if hadn't spent a week with him in the round pen. He was a highly spirited stallion that we put off working with for too long... sometimes things just get put off because there are other things to do. But he is now working in the rotation and is doing well and he hasn't hurt anyone or himself.

We start harnessing them hear at 24 months and work at 36 months. This guy just slipped through the cracks. He was so wild, we just didn't want to work with him. In the end he was going to the auction or he was going to get broke. He is working fine now.
Good day from Ont. Canada . Back i n middle 80's we bought mare from Amish She was not broke either, but couple yrs later she had a colt we were going to hitch. We had played so much with colt that went we hitch mare took more of a fit that colt. Thanks that was quite funny when kicked out of side.
HP was measured over a century ago with a 700lbs horse. My drafts are 2,000 pounds. They are 2.5 HP each. A draft cross is about 1.5/1.75. Maybe you forgot that physics lecture in college?
