As with most drama, the villains help sharply define the protagonist. Gus, Tio, Eladio, Tuco, "Eyebrow" Car Wash Guy, Lydia, Todd, Gretchen/Elliot, and my favorite, Uncle Jack. Wow! So well written and acted. Somehow, I go back to watch the "hit men lasers" scene most often, though. Don't we all wish we could have such a humiliating come-uppance with someone who royally screwed us? In fact, I'm gonna go watch it now!
@jimmym3352
@jimmym3352 5 лет назад
I admit I rooted for Walt. He was the protagonist of the show after all. The show was written around him. Hell yeah I cheered when he killed Gus (indirectly). The only aspect of Walt I didn't like was him working with that other young kid (can't remember his name), I had always hoped he and Jesse would get back together. That other kid as a POS, and Walt was bad for working with him.

The bit about WW refusing to take responsibility and being screwed over by a cruel world is exactly what makes Jesse such a great dramatic foil. Jesse is also someone who the world has repeatedly screwed over, often at Walter's own hands. Jesse wasn't born gifted with Walt's intellect, but he works hard because he cares, even while he's constantly told he's not good enough. Walter, on the other hand, is a man who feels bullied who in turn becomes the bully. His sense of empowerment is in reality just a continuation of the cycle of cruelty. Jesse is morally heroic because he refuses to continue the cycle, even as he is repeatedly punished for it. He refuses to lose his compassion for others. He accepts his brokenness. He constantly, desperately seeks redemption. He gives and gives and gives. Frankly, Jesse is the real hero of the show.

I can’t fully agree with the Jesse part. Much of what you said is true, like Jesse owning up to his misdeeds, which Walt often refuses to do. But one of Jesse’s major flaws in the beginning of the series is that he usually *didn’t* try. Yes, he wasn’t intellectually gifted like Walt but the vast majority of people aren't. For most things Jesse wasn’t willing to put forth the effort to produce something great or even passable. His mother comments on it, saying she wished he’d devoted as much time to school as to his “ridiculous jumping car.” Walt recognized it as his high school teacher - “apply yourself.” Jesse himself sees it when he talks about how one of the few times he worked hard on something (his wood shop project) ended with him selling it for weed. I think this is one of the reasons Jesse is a relatable and well liked character. A lot of people are like or have been like him. Jesse allows himself to not try because it’s easy. But at the same time he does want to be decent at SOMETHING and achieve SOMETHING. Unfortunately that something is a damaging substance like meth through the encouragement and guidance of a person like Walt. Jesse understands the negative effects of both, but because he’s found a greater feeling of self-worth in having “achieved” something and the only person who knows and fostered that development is Walt, it’s extremely difficult for him to completely remove them from his life. Walt also understands this and uses it as a form of manipulation.

I see that as symbolism of the partnership between Walt and Jesse, and a reference to the saying “birds of a feather flock together”. On the other hand this scene occurred just after Hank’s death, and since Jesse was about to get shot after helping Hank, it could be taken as a reference to their relationship in those last few episodes and the saying is instead “birds of a feather get shot together”.

Felicia: Writers had to get rid of him and have Walt do it, but personally, I thought Mike was too smart to have died that way. I just don't think the character---from what we had learned about him all along---wouldn't have anticipated that since Walt had no more use for him, and he was a possible future "witness", that Walt might try to kill him. I think he would have set up a much better "meet" place or better yet, just have Walt do a "drop" somewhere that he could go by and get the money, etc. I think the writers felt that had to show that Walt was ALWAYS smarter than everyone else so that's why they had him outsmart even Mike. But, frankly, it just didn't work for me. I think Mike would have been much more alert and not be caught off-guard like that.

There is a scene in 4.10 (Salud) after Walt Jr. puts Walt to bed, Walt asks him if he likes the car they bought him and Walt Jr. says he does and that it drives great. Walt responds in a sleepy fog with, "That's good, Jesse." This, to me, shows that Walt sees Jesse like he's a son. And much like his own son, he pushes him away, controls him, and generally treats him like shit. Walt may not know how to be a good person but that doesn't mean he can't love Jesse like family.

Yes, he 100% did, and despite his effort to provide for his family, he achieved the opposite, ruined everything and everyone's life. So in comparison, he definitely cared about Jesse, in his own selfish twisted way that ended up ruining Jesse's life. I just hope Jesse get's a second chance at life after all this. I'm not saying that the things Walt did were good, or that he wasn't selfish because let's face it, near the end he became greedy and he became addicted to the power. It's just seen throughout the episodes that Walt somewhat cared for Jesse, maybe because he was literally his partner in crime. It's in his mannerisms in the episodes. There were many times he could have killed Jesse himself but he didn't. But I respect that everyone has their own opinion on the matter 🤷‍♀️

I think you are close there, but I would contend the better analogy would be more towards the homoerotic-- not that Walt or Jesse consciously wanted sex with each other-- but often Walt and Jesse bicker with and snipe at each other like many head-strong couples in a dysfunctional marriage. In the midst of it all is a mentoring role (Walt) and a longing-for-approval role (Jesse) that goes back in Occidental culture to the pederasty of ancient Greece, and can also be seen in many 1940s-50s Hollywood Westerns; wherein a retired/reformed/good-hearted former gunslinger mentors a boy or teenager, but the gunslinger is compelled by circumstance to pay for past failures with his life (the Shootist) or a hasty departure (Shane) and the mentoring is in the end exposed as how NOT to live a satisfactory life.

Another thing to note is that, in keeping with the comparison to westerns, a lot of the heroes of those stories are actually really terrible people both from a contemporary standpoint and through a modern lens, but the movies frame them as conquering heroes and good men forced to make the tough decisions. It's the same with Walter, who does awful things and harms everyone around him but he frames himself as providing for his family and a victim of the world, so his actions are justified.

Walt fully wanted Jack to kill Jesse right up to the point where he realised he was wrong, and Jesse wasn't working with or even FOR Jack, but was Jack's slave. How he looks, especially how he can't look Jesse in the eye, shows how he realises that not only is it his own fault that this poor young man has ended up a tortured and abused slave, but that how Jesse has been enslaved by Jack is only the same as how Walt himself had enslaved Jesse by manipulating Jesse into doing his own bidding for all that time. See, Jesse was a slave throughout Breaking Bad. Jesse knew it by the end. We see this when he tells Walt to "stop working me", and "Just ask me for a favour". Jesse had fallen for this before, but he now was aware. But then thanks to Walt, he ends up a slave to someone else. Walt seems to see (at least as how see it), that the situation Jesse is in now is only different in one way to how he was when he was Walt's slave; this time he's physically enslaved, where Walt always kept him mentally and emotionally enslaved. And I think Walt was so ashamed because he knew that Jesse suffered worse abuse as Walt's slave than he has as Jack's slave. Much worse abuse. Mental and emotional abuse. The wounds inflicted on Jesse physically by Jack and his gang will heal. The emotional wounds Walt inflicted will never heal, will never go away. Thankfully, we now know that Jesse will eventually learn how to live with those emotional wounds. Even be at peace with them

@@judywright4241 I don't agree. Making that journey just to kill Jesse would have been a waste of so many things: resources, energy, and time that he was running out of. Walt may have been drunk on power and money, but by that point of his life he knew he didn't have long left and was just depleted. Therefore to make the trip just to kill would not have been logical especially by Walt's standards. I agree with OP - that journey was always made with the expressed intent to save Jesse. Walt made that trip to tie all loose ends, and would have viewed saving Jesse as a final good he could do, especially knowing how he felt about the kid deep down.

I also akin Walt's hiding to a biblical Jesus in the desert for 40 days. He went away, and found himself, and came back to finish business. The final scene is Walt as dad recognizes Jesse and passes the torch to Jesse to live life as he (Jesse) chooses. Just another slightly different point of view. Sure he was high on painkillers after his and Jesse’s big fight, but still :) And the scene before that where Walter breaks down actually crying while jr tries to comfort him saying everything’s ok and walt’s reply that it’s not. Watching that scene hearing the following where he slips up and calls his son Jesse is very nicely done. So much can be read into that. As many other scenes in this spactacular masterpiece of a show

Walt planned to save Jesse. That was his intent in going there. He carefully chooses his words and says what he knows will get Jack to bring Jesse out. He didn’t happen to have a gun set up in the back of his car at the perfect angle for no reason.

Pinkman accepting he’s the bad guy is a great way to end this video He accepts it but doesn’t let it consume him and turn him into the devil like Walt does with his alter ego heisenberg For him it was never about control or power or feeling alive , for him it was about finding himself, his worth, a sense of belonging or purpose In the end I guess they both found what they needed , they found out they could be more than their circumstances more than their past more than all their mistake and regret

I found Walter as the most self destructive character in TV. The epitome of a guy that can't get out of his own way.

I think Walt and Jessie's relationship is that of father and son, dispit how much Walt mistreats Jessie, how much he abusis and disrespects him he cares about jessie because he's like a son to him.

Jesse is the only person that stood by Walter, probably not like an equal but he's close like family.
