The first rule of breaking bad news: Set up the Interview.
This is not trying to make light of breaking bad news to patients but rather the absurd noises and distractions that all healthcare professionals are often faced with in the hospital. Please let me know in the comments if you enjoyed the video and would like similar concepts in the future!

An elderly relative was finally persuaded to see her doctor about some problems, and had some tests done. She got that call, you know, the one where the doctor wants you to come in and get the results in person. Relative didn't want to hear the results, and kept making excuses not to do it. Finally, the doctor himself phone and said "Mrs. X!!! You need to make an appointment! Don't you realize you have cancer??". After all that drama, the cancer was successfully treated.

Omg, I am the same way. I really never want to know if I'm past the point of no return and spend my remaining days probably doing things that are less healthy but help me relax and give me less days. I've spent dozens and dozens of days in the hospital in the last 2 years, and one of the last times I just let the doctors do and give me whatever labs, scans, tests, drugs, vitamins, blood, and platelets they wanted to, but straight up said, "I don't want to know the results of anything, just treat whatever is treatable the best you can while I'm here and prescribe whatever I need to go home with". My friend was in the room when I said that to a doctor and that made him very upset because he loves me. He kept trying to talk to the doctors leaving my room in the hallway to find out how bad whatever is, and obviously they can't tell him privately, ya know, because of HIPPA. They can only say to me, "Is it okay to talk about this with him in the room". But I would be at home like 'How much blood can I safely vomit and poop out?' Turns out, it's usually an emergency. I would usually wait (bc it's happened a bunch) until I couldn't walk without fainting and hitting my head a bunch of times and usually combined with days of not eating. But I'm getting a little better at it. I have an upcoming millionth upper endoscopy and my first colonoscopy (Dr. Schmidt's bread and butter) and I'm trying to be more brave about my health conditions.
@erincarlyon177

@@erincarlyon177 Don't give up! I know it's frustrating and demoralizing really BUT once your doctor figures out what's wrong with you you could be on the mend. I was extremely sick at one point and luckily my GP shared an office with a gastro and they got me set up for an initial appointment and soon after that doctor was like you need an endoscopy and a colonoscopy. It helped him find some answers and me feel better. I went on to recover and have had issues here and there but I'm nowhere near where I was before.

Now just put the patient in a 4 bedded room at the evening ward round, its 5pm, its also dinner time, and another patient in the room is being transferred to another ward, so theres a porter, three other patients, 2 staff bringing in dinners, one of the patients complaining that they ordered a baked potato, not pasta, three staff trying to organise to pat slide the patient onto the trolley and pack up their belongings, and now the consultant and their junior walk up to the patient on bed 1, who only had a CT CAP for what he thought was recurrent vomiting, but that showed a large mass on his kidney, a smaller mass on his renal artery and cannonball mets in his lungs. He is waiting to go to another ward, but just picking at some pasta and a yoghurt before he goes down... but don't worry, we have some curtains. They don't even properly meet in the middle but they're MAGIC curtains that give you all the privacy you need. Oh wait.

The interference I find most often is family members-making “jokes,” asking distracting questions (way off topic), scolding or not scolding children, undermining the information or instructions being given. I’m a nurse and our hospital (pre and now post pandemic) has a very liberal visitation policy. Most families are great, but there is always one group of class clowns that make it difficult!

You joking right? It can take 30 mins to clean a room. The doctor has many other patients to see and take care of. You have to use the time you have that is currently available to deliver a serious diagnosis she has been waiting to hear the results too. As far as sitting down. That happened t me, I was on a bed alarm, so if I dropped something I couldn't pick it up. My foot was bleeding through it's dressing and got everywhere when I'd be assisted to the bathroom. I didn't have a trash bin in reach. It was three days since we'd asked for some privacy and cleaning hadn't come back. Trash, blood, crumbs, hair from my brush, etc. I guess they showed us. It's not like the overnight nurse didn't have anything else to do, but after assisting me to the potty, she had to clean my room in the middle of the night, it had gotten so bad.
