I got pulled over today (on my 21st) and the first thing the cop said to me was “nice donut sticker”, what a legend! Still gave me an $80 ticket but him just complimenting the sticker made it worth it! You know who you are mr Welly NZ Police ;)
I think you are supposed to honk your horn while passing someone going the same direction on a 2 lane road. The driving without a steering wheel is probably a old law to cover super old driving contraptions that had alternate ways of steering the vehicle (but would now also apply to the tesla yoke).
South Carolina - You must stop 100 feet from a blind four way intersection when you are driving a non-horse driven vehicle and shoot a gun to warn the horse traffic.
The steering wheel one makes sense. I knew a guy that drove almost 800 miles in a 1950 Chevy using vicegrips clamped to the steering shaft. He bought it sight unseen and didn't know it didn't have a steering wheel.
I knew a guy who really loved one specific steering wheel so he shared it between cars. He'd do the vicegrip thing when he couldn't be bothered switching for short trips
What about eating? South Euclid, OH has a law against eating -- even in a parked car. They were known for raiding the McDonald's parking lot when I was a kid in the mid-90's.
Lol. They’re super noise conscious in Switzerland. If you live in an old building, one has to be careful of flushing too many times at night because it’s super loud. Ridiculous but it’s there to avoid people having big parties (and going to the bathroom often if there’s drinking) At least this was the case 12 years ago when I lived in Geneva
Wow, what about guys with prostate problems? I imagine older gay couple living in that house and pissing into pots during the night as to not disturb their neighbors and break the law
The driving topless thing is illegal here in SA too, as well as driving with open shoes, my dad eventually asked a cop about it and he (the cop) said that youd be amazed at just how much clothing saves you from lacerations in an accident and that thats why that particular law exists
Most laws against open shoes also exist because many people had accidents due the shoes getting snagged on the gas/brake pedals. You would be surprised how many people get rear ended because someone got their shoe tangled with the pedals on stop and go traffic.
There is a reason that cloth armour in the days of ole was a thing. Anything is better than nothing, and even 1mm could be the difference between a cool story to tell your kids or never having the chance to have kids.
I don't feel like this makes a ton of sense in a car, but I see all those idiots riding motorcycles in shorts and T-shirts. As for shoes, I'd think driving barefoot would be fine (I've done so many times) but certain types of shoes like heels, flip-flops, heavy boots, and so on, could slip off the pedals, get caught on them, hit the wrong pedal, or just be excessively cumbersome.
@@quillmaurer6563 nah your shoes keep your blood in your feet when your feet get crushed by the engine, i still drive barefoot myself (when wearing flip flops coz i dont want the flip flops getting caught up) but yea, shoes apparently keep your blood inside you when your feet get crushed during an accident, same thing as wearing a shirt, your shirt protects you from the ancient death by a 1000 cuts 😂
I saw my first donut sticker in the wild (I live in a small town). It was on a truck in a bigger city about two hours from my house and lost my mind. The amount of money I’ve spent on merch seeing any in the wild is like meeting a new friend
As a person who's been in a motor vehicle accident I can definitely say I am very happy I was wearing my work polo, jeans, and my shoes. My shoes were worn pretty good but the sole kept my right foot, that was shoving the brake pedal down, from getting anything worse than some terrible bruising on the bottom and a bummed up ankle. I got a cut to the knee which would've been worse if I was in shorts or no pants. The seat belt really worked together with the airbag and I had some bruising from the seatbelt on my shoulder and chest but I can't imagine how bad that belt would've sliced me if I wasn't wearing a shirt to pad it.
I'm from switzerland and i never even saw a g wagon here xD and it's not like people are very noisy here. It's common sense that you are considerate of other people so no idea why we have this law. I've never even heard of it before lol
well, it´s quite the opposite in Germany though... I know quite a few people making REAL sure their car doors are properly closed, like, every single time
In Australia I feel like I heard about the keeping all limbs inside the vehicle was a law. Though we (or atleast I) grew up as kid learning to not put your arms or head out the window for safety, even had a childrens book once. It just seemed like common sense 😅. Im a bit hazy about keeping your arm on the window sill. I know alot of drivers here (including myself) like driving around with my arm on the window sometimes.
Florida's loud music law takes a different perspective, I think. If someone can hear music 25' from a car (especially with the windows rolled up), then the Driver is certainly not going to be able to listen for important things, like car noises, other car horns, and probably most importantly, SIRENS from emergency vehicles. The steering wheel law is because tillers were a popular method of steering early cars, just like riding down a hill in a little red wagon. It wasn't as precise (and consequently not as safe) as a steering wheel, just like riding down a hill in a little red wagon.
Watching this channel evolve has been something else. Up to speed did wonders for donut. Now you can drift a turbo Miata while shooting at targets for work. Talk about euphoria
There are some exceptions to that law, the one I remember is that in a vehicle produced before a certain date, you don't have to wear them if the car didn't originally come with them, however if they're present, you still have to wear them I'm pretty sure. It mostly exists to "protect" old/classic cars, by not forcing you to have to modify them to have seatbelts.
@@ThePolish2107 There are several different dates in UK law. 1965: Cars don't even need anchor points before this date 1983: Front belts must be fitted 1987: Rear belts must be fitted, but not to all seats (e.g. lap belt across centre seat) 1989: All front-facing seats must have belts (i.e. rear and side-facing ones such as limousines / FX4 taxis don't need them) 1991: All seats must have belts All dates: Must be worn if fitted. Once an older car is retro-fitted with belts, they must remain fitted (cannot be reverted back to original no-belt spec).
Actually driving topless is illegal in many countries, including France where I live. You can get some real bad burns with the sagety belt if you have to break hard
As a truck driver, in the us alot of truck drivers will be shirtless if they are parked most likely they got dirty at a job, hot, or just want to be more comfortable. It happens more often than you think lol
Here, in Estonia you can't drive a car topless. Any car. Even if it is you own. Even if you a driving it on the beach. I got a ticket about a month ago, cause i drove my car topless after i was swimming.
I have to give you guys 1 MILLION props for wearing paintball masks while using the marker. Far too many people think they are just toys and don't use proper protection. Especially on TV! THANK YOU for portraying our sport in a proper manner!!!
Ah, good times being back in Key West talking to one of our favorite cops at a gas station when an Altima rolls up to the light blasting his boom boom. "Hey, does that look like more than 25ft?" / "Yep, sure does" / "Alright guys, have a good one" and off he went to go stop the other guy
The Australian law makes sense. I live in Australia any my auntie had her hand out the window of a car that rolled over when she was young. She luckily only lost a finger but it could have gone much worse
i also have to agree because i almost broke all of my right hand fingers once cuz a bus hit our driver side mirror and my fingers went into a traffic sign at like 70kmh
I know the loud noise from a car ordinances seem pretty tedious, but the biggest problem is actually safety for the driver. If you have your radio up so loud that people can hear it a good ways off, then it will be harder for you to hear things like Sirens from an emergency vehicle or other cars honking at you to avoid a collision. That said, 25 ft is pretty short.
@@g.b.8836 That definitely depends on the state and the circumstances. In most places, the intended purpose of the horn is to warn other motorists of a potential Collision. Remember, the federal government requires manufacturers to include a horn as standard safety equipment. So the use of the horn clearly cannot be illegal everywhere at all times.
That Florida law is brand new, went into effect June or July first, can't remember which. I volunteer at my local pd, every cop I know thinks it's unnecessarily restrictive, I can't really see it being enforced too heavily
The anti sound law has little to do with actual safety, instead it's an Anti-Teen, Anti- Minority Law put on the books to give police an added tool for harassment. The old law had decibel ratings, which makes sense for keeping things quite but this is too arbitrary. I wonder if you van ticket a cop or ambulance since they emit sounds you can hear from greater than 25 feet. Or garbage trucks, delivery vans, ect.
I’ve been unsuccessfully whale hunting in Tennessee and Kentucky for most of my life. Driving while whale hunting will be super fun. Thanks, Donut Media, for making my landlocked states whale hunting trips so much more enjoyable.
I was just watching your vids and downloaded dirt 5 for the first time! Can't belive the podcasts are delivered to me by my favorite place to get "up to speed"!
As someone who lives in Australia, this is correct, however, there is an exception. You can place your hand out of the vehicle further than the mirror. If you do, can result in a 1 point, and $213 fine.
I'm from Denmark and took my driver's license about 3-5 mouths ago, and i can say NOBODY checks under their car before driving. Not even my driving instructor 🤣🤣🤣🤣
The "It's Illegal to Hunt from a moving Vehicle, unless it is a Whale" law is maritime law that was adopted for use. This is so that when this law was originally written (most likely in the 1800's) it did not impede the very important economic process of 'Whaling'. So not stupid per se, just very dated.
@@AveragePicker Once again it was adopted from maritime law, I didn't say lawmakers are smart or that they read nor understand ever bit of legislation that is put before them to vote on. It's called "pork", legislation is often packed with tons of non-sense.
They got sold as a company last year, hopefully the content that we had before can make a return but I think they’re under a corporate structure that may not support their previous endeavors
It's not actually required to honk when you're passing because you can alternatively shout at the person you're passing. I think that would create even more confusion.
Honestly if one wanted to be an A-hole about it. One could probably sue and win a case on constitutional grounds. Pennies are still legal tender and any business or agency refusing to accept them undermines its purpose as real money. (Although I'm all for phasing them out of circulation for good.)
@@alexisrivera200xable no don't phase them out...I've saved pennies in 5 gal water jugs or buckets and have saved $3-4 hundred dollars. People are just lazy and want instant gratification
@@dubious6718 pretty sure they had the law first and then made sure the machines wouldn't count pennies. That way even if someone mistakingly brakes the law, they would stop wasting money very quickly
@@dubious6718 It doesn't count pennies, but if you fill them up they can't accept any other coins, so the meter is technically out of order and you can park for free. It depends how many you need to jam the meter.
@@mrsnezbit2219 Nothing against odd amounts in UK AFAIK. But you'd get a cop that would object claiming you could think it was a motorbike or having a headight that doesn't work.
In Spain driving a car bare-chested or topless is punishable, as is driving with an arm outside the window. Eating, drinking, smoking or applying make-up behind the wheel can also be fined. Passengers who drive with their feet on the dashboard (possible problems with the airbag in case of collision) can expect a fine of up to €100.
I was looking at a jeep on marketplace and it had a vise grip as the steering wheel and they didn't even mention it in the description, it was just barely in one picture
I live in Florida(in a pretty big, densely populated city) and see that music law broken multiple times every day. I have also been in traffic with police and people blaring their music. I've never seen anyone stopped for it. I don't think it's a commonly enforced law. But keep in mind, it could be used for probable cause if they are looking for a reason to stop someone.
I live in Florida and recently I heard a cops radio(dispatch) from well over 25ft away, got it on video too.. not gonna see them get in trouble though. Also its not impossible to drive a wheel-less car with vicegrips.
I’ve lived in Rhode Island my entire life and I’ve never heard of this law. They don’t teach this as part of Drivers Ed, nor is it part of the written or practical exam. But hey, here we are.
4:57 When I see this I don't even know this law exists even though I'm Thai lol btw this law is applicable only to transport workers, like taxi driver, bus driver, delivery man, etc.
I love Jeremiah talking about driving without a shirt and his foot out the window being illegal while he isn't wearing a seatbelt, which is also illegal in California, so give yourself another $162 fine.
Remember when we used to laugh AND learn stuff from Donut Media videos? I’ve grown fond of the crew over the past years, and enjoy the hijinx, but I gotta say… I miss the super geeky car nerd stuff.
Here in Denmark, we take that law extremely serious, the police hide in bushes waiting for people to begin their journeys before checking for children. we lose atleast 10.000 kids each year to people not searching for kids before beginning their journey.
For anyone wondering why Switzerland has such an odd law, Switzerland is very strict on how much noise you can make. You're not allowed to flush the toilet after 10pm or shower after 12am. No mowing the lawn or any loud garden work between 12-1pm and after 6pm, 5pm on Saturdays and none at all on Sundays and there's a lot more
@@IHateMyAccountName No, the royal anthem is played before any movie to honor the king and his family. The national anthem is played every day at 6pm on every TV channel and radio channel.
I've asked a cop about the Florida music law.. They think it's dumb also.. It's more or less a "safety" law.. Basically it's against having a loud system in your car to the point where you may not be able to hear an emergency vehicle aproaching
Not sure. Some cars have gesture sensors which could take it's place and be technically legal. Some prototype hybrids were built without steering wheels too. They use game console type steering but not sure if it made production.
I love you guys but you've got some of the most capable cameras in your possession, even the R5C, and the footage is like 70% overexposed, sometimes out of focus and pretty flat overall. What's wrong with your dude changing ND filter to clear in sunlight on 6:05? Please, you've got almost 7M subs, your content is way above most auto shows, don't you want it to be a bit more aesthetically pleasing? Imagine how beautiful your videos can look if shot and graded properly. Don't get me wrong, you're my favorite channel ever and that's why I want only the best for you.
I find so many children's under my car when I start a journey. One time a children asked my if I wanted to start a quest, so I told him I was in the middle of a journey.
Some honest feedback. I have to say this video seemed like it was intended for 13 year olds. It's a bummer Donut keeps moving in this direction. Just these Monday videos aren't really that good even though I'm sure a lot of effort was put into it. Illegal dumb car laws. Really guys? Come on, gives us Bumper 2 Bumper. Give us Science Garage. Give us Up 2 Speed. Even the new season of Hi Low seemed low effort compared to the others. Not sure what is going on over there but seems like Donut is losing their magic spice slightly. Even the podcast has fallen off. I stopped listening because it became so hyper focused on racing drivers and F1 instead of automotive history. I'm saying this as a long time fan. We want to old donut back we want car culture.
Like a lot of channels, they are adapting to the comment section filled full of teenage verbal diarrhea. The producers probably think that's the demographic, and decided to put out equally immature kid videos. They pander to the perceived audience, instead of keeping the formula that made their channel in the first place. That's why they use adult words now like, "pee-pee."
In Michigan you can't have lighting under your car or the good tinted windows on the front doors. I think having lighting under the car would increase safety because it would be more visible.
The Rhode Island is the most sensible. I always do a light honk everytime I'm overtaking and feel that they might switch lanes without looking. I ALWAYS do it when over taking a truck in the highway because it's better to be safe than under 6ft under.
The first one about playing music that can be heard from 25 feet away is hilarious to me. I took a trip to Florida to visit my brother in May and there was a car with speakers mounted into the car's body panels blasting music running through Orlando.
0:51 I like playing music loud in my car but the annoying thing is when a car pulls up at the intersection close to you and you can’t hear your own music cause they’re blasting their base to the point it shakes your car.
An additional strange law: Ontario is 1 out of 3 provinces (states) in Canada where you are required a front license playe while every other province you can do whatever you want with it
In Oregon, it's illegal to: - Partake in an endurance race, and if caught, you are considered guilty of speed racing. - Leave your car door open for longer than is "necessary" - Dispose of human waste on the side of a highway. - And the classic: pump your own gas.
3:50 A lot of old parking meters only take quarters or nickels, like old candy machines. Other coins would jam the machine and render it unusable, requiring removal and tear down of the machine to free the coins.
I didn’t realize there were so many palm trees in Rhode Island. I’ve always wanted to go there but you fellas sealed the deal for me. Looks tropical! 😀
