"...doesn't move until after he hits..." so good. that one tip alone has really improved my drops. I see so many players (and I was guilty of this too), hopping or doing some weird one-legged upward motion when they are hitting drops. crazy. be balanced, hit, then move.

Great analysis... I think you are so right saying how underrated deep returns are as you can see that generally that it shows who will have the advantage in a particular rally. Actually, it would be interesting to see a quantitative look at the number of short returns vs long returns that result in which won the rally.

This was an awesome video-maybe the best break down of a match I've seen. One question, at 26:43, you talk about taking the low drive and the mistake that's made of hitting the ball up back to your opponent, which allows them to attack it. That's something I've been messing up a lot lately, for some reason. Is there a better play there or is it a matter of better execution (ie. get lower, a softer reset, cross court instead of down the middle, etc.)? Please do more videos like these in the future. I actually watched this match and couldn't believe the amount of Ernes you did. Phenomenal and fun to watch!

Was just watching your Orchard match before your breakdown here--so this analysis is very helpful--Also appreciate you speaking to what the other players are doing. Your warmth in presentation is excellent. Please continue over the long haul. In time you could show your skill progression by contrasting now with earlier matches--another way to think about how to look at things.

Great breakdown. My biggest takeaway: 1. Return DTL when unwinding the stack. I usually return cross court because I feel like if I go down the line and they hit a cross court their angle is going away from me. Whereas if I go cross court then depending on the angle of my return they are hitting the ball either pretty straight (linear) or back towards me if I return super wide. Maybe they can go around me down the line if I return super wide. I will try it your way next time knowing that they are hitting on the hypotenuse aka the longest side of the triangle. The second takeaway besides the verbiage of “unwinding the stack” which is my new favorite phrase is dinking to the center and looking for the forehand player to go inside out and then I can Ernie that ball. I’m going to have to try that as well.

Would love a video on playing left side versus right side-I don't think I've seen this done well anywhere. I feel like a much better right side player than I am a left side, probably due to not having a great forehand yet. I certainly feel way more comfortable on the right side. So, it would be great to have a video comparing the two sides and how someone who plays one side better than the other can overcompensate as they work on improving, as well as how they can improve on each side.

Another awesome video!! Congrats on the win! I love how forthcoming with compliments you are for your partner Cooper. At 9-9 you talk about how locked in he is. And previously you showed how good he is at shifting right and nailing a backhand. But in this sequence he slides right 2x i think but then doesn't on the next shot and hammers a forehand. Sooooo... how do you know (How -to-do-it, and) when to slide and how do you know when not to?
@thatpickleballguy
@thatpickleballguy 8 месяцев назад
Yeah, this a good question. I still don't have the answer, I'm exploring both in my own game. Typically, I prefer slide over forehand to remove having to make a decision between the two. If I slide backhand, that's one decision. As long as my partner (if im playing the right), knows to cover the middle, that works. I'd coach players to slide.

Thanks for this. I'm 41 years old and still fairly athletic. I've played a lot of other sports like basketball, baseball, football, etc. I really want to get into pickleball and become great at it. Seems daunting though. We do have plenty of pickleball courts in my city. Any advice on getting over the nerves and just hitting the court for some games? Even though there are plenty of courts here, I don't know anyone in my area in the pickleball community.

Pickleball people are the best! I was playing with a buddy and our 11 year old daughters yesterday. The kids wanted a break, so us dads jumped in a game with some people I’d played with before (here’s how: I made eye contact with one of them between games, held up 2 fingers and smiled. Then we started playing). Meanwhile, as the kids drifted back on the court, a couple of young adults invited them to play. Super sweet, right? My daughter afterward; “I can see why you like pickleball, Dad. Everyone is so nice,”

This video format is awesome, very helpful. Only question, you mention returning down the line so the opponent returns cross court when unwinding the stack so that it takes more time for your opponent to attack cross court. But wouldn’t returning cross court accomplish the same goal? It takes longer for your return to travel cross court, and the ball travels the same distance overall across the 2 shots

First, your stuff is the Best! Great breakdown! Second- I happen to catch your entire match this past Monday (10-30). Really fun to watch you in action! A couple of questions. When you are playing doubles and playing at the kitchen a significant amount of time, do you find the Invicta Air a little tough for controlling some dinks and speed-ups? Also, being as long as you are, it seemed like there were times when dinking, some came back to you just high and deep enough for you to speed up,(again, because you are so long). In you overall reviewing of this, were there times you felt there were some missed chances at this or not. (I will say because of the camera angle I may be miss reading how close they were to you for this potential speed-up opportunity, and it may not have been an opportunity at all) Thanks!

Really enjoy your videos! So, I'm always seeing things in these vids where I'm not sure where the rule stands. When you feature your first erne and you jump over the corner on the left side for the put away, it looks like your shoe might have caught the sideline. Is that OK? I understand the front line is a no-no but I'm not sure about this rule. Thanks!

Great video! I really enjoy how informative your videos are, but still leave some room for humor and lightheartedness. I also appreciate that you can admit when you make a mistake. So, a not so quick question, when I watch high level matches, I am constantly seeing drops that end up bouncing up to (what looks like) net height and I keep wondering why people aren't cranking them. I am wondering if they really aren't really rising that high, the level of speed you can get, even with topspin, would be easily countered at that level or something else. To be honest, because I am concerned about this, I constantly try to drop closer/lower to the net than I should and sometimes hit the tape (aka the pie in the face). Thoughts? --D

Great videos, thank you. At 22:35, when your partner dinked cross court, should you have moved (your left) right on the video to cover where they stuffed the winner down the open side. (presuming your partner would move with you to cover the middle?) I would guess if you did, the speed up shot would have been to your chicken wing or cross court perhaps. Thanks again for the great videos, I know how much work it is to produce great content.

What made you want to switch to the power air over the 002?
@thatpickleballguy
@thatpickleballguy 8 месяцев назад
Good question. I had heard this specific colorway power air (the presige) had a bite more spin. AND, with winter coming, last year was tough to play with the 002 in te winter. because when it gets colder, the ball plays faster, and it gets difficult to drop and reset with that thing. Wanted a little more control. Power air still has really good power. but better feel.
