I'm all for recognizing Juneteenth. But, I honestly never heard of it until Trump had a rally on that day and some people got mad about it. I'm in my 50's. When people complained about Trump holding a rally on that day, I had to Google it. I am absolutely no Trump fan, but Trump was kind of right when he said nobody has heard of it until then. Maybe it is a failure of our educational system.

In the history of the abolishment of slavery in the U.S., June 19th means nothing. *The 13th Amendment, which abolished slavery, was ratified on Dec. 6, 1865.* That day seems to be the real day to celebrate the end to slavery in the U.S.. Also, the Democratic Party was 100% against getting rid of slavery. Teach that fact in history classes.

While it is true that some Africans participated in the transatlantic slave trade by capturing and selling others, it is crucial to recognize the broader context. The transatlantic slave trade was predominantly orchestrated by European powers, who created a profitable system of enslavement. It is important to remember that African societies were not homogenous, and many actively resisted the slave trade. Rather than comparing who was worse, or whose to blame let us focus on understanding the complexities of history and working towards empathy, justice, and reconciliation.

All federal holidays began out of a political need for votes. This one is no different. Private companies can choose which holidays to offer their employees. I do not have a problem with a limited number of federal holidays or even adding different holidays; however, to add another holiday we need to drop an existing one. The taxpayers need to receive value for their investments in the government.

Pride recognition we see today started to evolve with Parades and marches back in the 70s as a local Pride day events because of the Stonewall Inn Raids in New York City. I think you might have forgotten about Black History month in February? MLK Day, Black History Month, and Juneteenth seems to be in the lead compared to hispanic, Irish, Asian, Catholic, or Jewish Prind day/week/month and Federally recognized Holidays.

Only ..... July 4th wasn't actually freedom for EVERYONE. America still had slavery for another HUNDRED YEARS.... Oh and even after the emancipation proclamation some slave owners just decided they were not going to let their slaves go and keep them for like a whole other harvest and it took troops coming through to tell them hey you have to let these people go or we're going to take you to jail.... I thought celebrating the end of slavery was like celebrating the removal of a tumor, a bit over the top. But then i realized that Bastille Day was a similar celebration, just the liberation of starved peasants instead of enslaved people. Or celebrating the Russian Revolution. Aside from the holiday's valid importance, why the nebulous name (Juneteenth)? What does teenth mean? How does it relate to 19th? As "defund the police" was a bad slogan that sunk a worthy cause, this holiday's confusing name may prohibit a wide embrace (which may seem racist). Also, we don't teach slavery, we teach transatlantic slave trade without a historic or global context. Google seems to hide the prevalence and brutality of the worldwide practice. Americans were not unique, and kids rarely know that the UK/US were the first two countries to reverse the legality of this horror.

Emancipation and Juneteenth are two different days. Juneteenth is when the last of the slaves were freed. After Emancipation because some slave owners were refusing.
