We decide our legacy, and we have the power to change our generational inheritance! In this message, Pastor Jimmy Evans shows us how to stop the hurt legacy and step into a legacy of blessing!
Series: How to Be Free
Message: Breaking Generational Bondages
Speaker: Jimmy Evans
Notes:
Deuteronomy 5:9-10
“For I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the
fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who
hate Me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep
My commandments.”
TRUTH #1: Our lives are generationally connected and have the power to transmit:
o Righteousness or Sin
o Health or Unhealth
o Blessing or Cursing
o Wealth or Poverty
o Education or Ignorance
o Pleasure or Pain
TRUTH #2: We decide our legacy, and we have the power to change our generational inheritance!
HOW TO STOP THE HURT LEGACY AND BEGIN A LEGACY OF BLESSING
1. Make Peace with the Past
Deuteronomy 6:5-9
You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul,
and with all your strength. “And these words which I command you today
shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and
shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way,
when you lie down, and when you rise up. You shall bind them as a sign on
your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall
write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
Ephesians 6:4
“And you fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them
up in the training and admonition of the Lord.”
A Parent’s Behavior has an Influence on Their Family for at
Least Three Generations!
HOW TO BREAK FAMILY INIQUITIES:
o Recognize the problem as sin.
o Take responsibility for your sin or problem and repent.
o Forgive your parents (and others).
o Submit the affected sin or area to Jesus and let him be your role model as you seek him in his word.
Matthew 5:33-37
“Again, you have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not swear
falsely, but shall perform your oaths to the Lord.’ But I say to you, do not
swear at all; neither by heaven, for it is God’s throne; nor by the earth, for it
is His footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. Nor
shall you swear by your head, because you cannot make one hair white or
black. But let your ‘yes’ be ‘yes’ and your ‘no’ be ‘no’. For whatever is more
than this is from the evil one.”
James 4:13-17
“Come now, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such
city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit; whereas you do
not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a
vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. Instead, you
ought to say, ‘If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.’ But now
you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil. Therefore, to him
who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin.”
HOW TO BREAK INNER VOWS:
o Recognize them
o Repent
o Forgive
o Submit to Jesus
2. Make Plans for the Future
Proverbs 13:22
A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children, But the wealth
of the sinner is stored up for the righteous.
Three Important Questions:
1. What is it that I want to leave as an inheritance for my children and grandchildren?
2. If I continue to live as I am, what legacy will I leave my children and grandchildren? Are my intentions and actions consistent with my desires?
3. Am I living my life primarily for myself or am I living my life to transfer generation blessings to my children and grandchildren?
2 Kings 20:16-19
Then Isaiah said to Hezekiah, “Hear the word of the LORD: ‘Behold, the
days are coming when all that is in your house, and what your fathers have
accumulated until this day, shall be carried to Babylon; nothing shall be
left,’ says the LORD. ‘And they shall take away some of your sons who will
descend from you, whom you will beget; and they shall be eunuchs in the
palace of the king of Babylon.’” So Hezekiah said to Isaiah, “The word of
the LORD which you have spoken is good!” For he said, “Will there not be
peace and truth at least in my days?”

Pastor Jimmy, I'm adopted, did I get these generational curses from both my adopted parents and my birth parents? If so, sure would explain a lot.

Yes, it doesn’t have to be inherited just through bloodline
