Matt, I’m a viewer of your channel and also a DIYer who resides here in Salinas PR. Watching your videos I noticed that you often use pre-mixed cement bags which are very expensive. If you visit your local Ferreteria, buy 4 meters of sand and 4 meters of gravel(separated), dump them near your construction site next to each other, buy the Portland Cement “Cemento Ponce or San Juan” add 12 shovels of Sand and 17 of gravel to ONE cement bag, your cement will go far and so will your $$$$. Cuídense

I believe he started with that method on 'the wall'. Don't recall why he switched. My guess would be a time saver. Dump in a bag, hose, pour, repeat. 👌And no shoveling.

Fun Facts - The larger the surface area of a footing, the larger the load it will carry. Meaning a 2'deepx2'x2' footing will not carry a much larger load than a 1'deepx2'x2'... But a 1' foot deep footing that is 3'x3' will carry a much heavier load. Plus you should have set your bolts in the wet concrete, even better would have been the post brackets then you could do a nice broom finish around the bracket and edged the footing.

Surface area concept. Interesting. Seems that would work for downward load, but sideways? From wind? Wouldn't depth then come in handy?
@jimmarshall5453
@jimmarshall5453 17 дней назад
@@oregon1232 The major unexpected problem of wind is lifting force. Thanks fr mentioning the bolts. My thought exactly.
@stevemazz3121
@stevemazz3121 15 дней назад
@@oregon1232 No matter what you did to the footing sideways load would be a problem at this point due to the way the post will be connected to the pier pad. An engineered solutions such as a shear wall could be added to deal with these critical areas, Shear walls fight wind Shear up lift and side loads. Of course Shear Straps should have been placed in the pier pads to connect to the post to help with lift problems.

Matt you should have put you mounts in the wet concrete and tied them to you rebar would have made your life easier and saved you some time. If you put the bolts in with the head down you could have used nuts to level your mounts

If you want to reduce big on the cost of concrete, order a heap of sand, a heap of gravel and the amount of portland cement you need for each job. With a tarp under and over the sand as well as for the gravel, it will be there for a few years. Make the concrete in a ratio of 1-2-3 cement-gravel-sand in volume.👴🤓

You can use concrete epoxy and regular all thread for hurricane anchors. All thread can be cut to lenght and is much cheaper than wedge anchor bolts. If Florida with American high regulations say its safe then you will be fine. Don't forget to put the nut on before each cut on all thread. The nut will chace the threads where you cut it.

Hi Matt. Fun job. Just a tip from and old engineer. To save time and some money you can add “plums” to the footings. Basically they are just large clean rocks that you place in the concrete as you go to make it go further. And yes the word plum is an old engineering term that i learnt off my father. Something fort the future. A rag bolts should be fine, diagonal braces more important. Cheers

Build a shipping container home...!! Get three or four! CHEAP...I mean ECONOMICAL...you're used to living on a boat, and now an RV. Those shipping containers can be stacked, gutted for windows...AND they can accept bright paints, that would look amazing in that jungle...!!! You can spray insulation onto the walls, stack and make patios...if you have a leak...you just weld the leak closed. You should try it!!! Later on, you can turn it into a couple Bread and Breakfasts, if you build a house in a different place later.
