Breaking Ground on the New Garden | Starting Over from Scratch

We begin the long and arduous task of starting our new garden. We prep the ground, gather compost and start sifting the native soil with our homemade screen. It may still be a long time before we can get plants in the ground but like the saying goes, good things don't come easy. Moose fencing and building the future greenhouse are still on the agenda.
We appreciate you tagging along for our Alaskan adventure 😀

Rosemary. The lovely scent of rosemary pulls double duty: It welcomes pollinators, but is off-putting to mosquitoes. Lavender produces a strong and pleasant aroma that mosquitoes find repulsive.
@beckypincalifornia1985
@beckypincalifornia1985 11 дней назад
I completely agree! May be able to plant in moveable garden beds and over-winter in shop or warmer space. I've done a bit of time in jungles in Central and South America. The rangers used to carry or set up torches to fend off the mosquitos ... using some sort of resin or sap. Maybe you can contact Alaska master gardeners or public health authorities to see if they have suggestions.

I really enjoy the whole garden process. Creating the garden foundation (soil) and infrastructure (hothouse) is so integral to its success. I chuckled when Ariel referred to the day's 56F temperature as a heatwave. 55F is the highest temperature that I've experienced in Costa Rica these past 14 years. Your soil screen is ingenious. My 1975 & 1976 were spent working on the construction of a coal powered generation plant in Boardman, Oregon. I worked in a testing lab doing quality control on construction materials for the project, which included soil analysis. We encountered soils from fine clays to 3-4 man boulders for reservoir dam faces. Our screens (sieves) openings varied from 200 per inch to 3 feet square, which were openings cut into sheets of plywood. Thanks for bringing back those interesting days.

When we got hit with mosquitos , I couldn't believe the amount that we had to fend off. I am from Texas, so we have our fair share of these little blood suckers, but I will say, your skeeter's take the cake. Our mosquitos are not as massed as y'all are, yall are like little gangs trolling around waiting for its next victim. lol I will say, I did love visiting Alaska. Funny story from many, many years ago. Back in the early 1970s, my great aunt visited us when we moved into our new house and were working on developing the backyard. This was in the San Francisco East Bay and our soil was just nothing but rock hard clay. We had hundreds of 50 pound bags labelled "Steer Manure." My great aunt, who was about 70 at the time looked at the bags in confusion and said, "How do they know it's steer? Do they follow them around and collect it specifically?" Yeah, a lifelong farmer.... I remember my parents nearly losing it laughing, and then taking here out to the San Joaquin Valley to see multiple thousand plus head of steer herds run by the Harris Ranch.

I sifted the soil for one of my gardens, (but on a smaller scale) - - the dirt was from an abandoned creek bed sort was really wonderful, but totally full of weeds. I ran it through s hardware-cloth screen (1/2" mesh) stretched over a wood frame on top of a wheel barrow. I filled it with a shovels of dirt, gave it a few shakes, ,dumped the the weeds in a big pile and spread the dirt. The trees, bushes, and perennials in this garden have grown like crazy. It is a blooming jungle that suppressed most of the weeds.

I had that happen to me once it was at a pool once and it was two parents with their two kids and they took a photo of me and proceeded to take video and said to their girls you don’t want to be fat like her someday do you? She shouldn’t be allowed in public looking like that. I told them I may be fat but I can do something about it but unfortunately rude and ignorant people don’t have any hope of changing they are jerks and always will be. I told their girls I had had an accident and had gained all my weight after it during my recovery phase but I had already lost 60lbs and I was proud of it so my skin may be sagging at my upper arms and thighs but I had a nice respectable bathing suit on with the skirt down to my knees and I wanted to enjoy the pool with my kids rather then sitting on the sidelines. I told them I have a very big heart and I see others through their actions not by how “pretty or thin” they may be on the outside I also told them that I think people are mean like that because they need to eat something because they are basically starving. They both laughed at that. I told them all this out of ear shot of their parents. So I hoped they would tell their mother what I had said. Unfortunately there are just obnoxious rude people in this world. Im glad this video gave you some relief from thinking about it but please don’t let their rudeness ruin whatever you want to accomplish!! I say go for it you can do anything you set your mind to do!!!🥰❤️🙏🏻🍁🇨🇦

OBSERVATION...One day Ariell pulls out BEAST MODE and clears a forest, drives heavy equipment and shovels 8 tons of dirt. The next day Arielle bakes quiche, muffins and egg souffle and handles homemade bread with soft babylike hands. Arielle is Mrs. Alaska. Arielle and Eric, when you two open up the KTWM (Kids To Women and Men) school. Im sending my kids up there to get a degree. Great job Eric and Arielle.

Frame in the porch and put on screening, that will keep the state bird away from your outside dinning and cooking!!!! Will you be using the netting over parts of the "run"? So much work be once it's done you'll enjoy it every summer. Maybe a small screen "tent" as a gazebo in the garden. Nice place to sit and drink morning coffee. You could still put the flooring up on the walls. I'm glad we used vinyl in our coop 3 years ago. So easy to clean up. Thanks for sharing. God bless and protect.

Y'all grab some of those vinyl tablecloths with the flannel (ish) backing the next supply run. Staple them to the wall behind the roost. Almost as good as the linoleum on the floor!

Hi from the southern hemisphere. NON-TOXIC - MOSQUITO REPELLENT & SOOTHER RECIPE. In New Zealand a mum made a safe insect repellent/soother oil for her children. Using essential oils with a sweet almond base. It’s called ‘Goodbye Sandfly’, but it works on other blood sucking insects. When I can’t get to NZ (I spend most of my year in Australia)I make my own using, either sweet almond oil base or liquid coconut oil. So usually with about 125ml of the base oil I add an 1/8th of a teaspoon of each of the following essential oils; Manuka, lemongrass, lavender, pine, tea tree, eucalyptus, and camomile. I adjust some of the oils, if I find the mosquitoes are a bit more voracious. After a good shake I put it into small squeeze bottles and/or spray bottles. You can use it on your face, scalp, and everywhere else as it’s water soluble, I also rub some on clothes, hats etc. Some of the essential oils are repellents, others are soothers for the bites.

Fox are raising pups this time of year and definitely will be smart enough to take chickens during the day. Free ranging chickens are an easy free meal to come back for again and again to feed their growing family. Clearing brush won’t keep them from the easy meal opportunities free ranging chickens offer. Love the new garden and I can’t wait to see all the gardening success!

You can build a torch on wheels that can burn a swatch several feet wide, and torch the weeds and seeds really effectively. This will allow you to leave most of the top soil in place. It's an effective weed control. As you rotate the crops during the season you torch again to kill emerges. Over a season or two you'll have most weed pressure eliminated.

So excited the garden has commenced. A lot of hard work prepping the soil. Loved the baby chicks, so cute. Sly foxes - the poor chickens are easy target. Bandit has too easy a life. He should be chasing the foxes away lol. 🙏 🇦🇺

Your garden is going to me massive compared to the old one. When I was a kid my dad made a sifter from 2" wire grid that he formed into a barrel shape. He made two of these, one fitting inside the other. The outside was stationary and the inside revolved to move the packed dirt through the sieves. A motor was attached to the inside sieve to turn it. There were rims, probably from oil barrels, that were on both ends of the 'barrel' with wheels between them at the rim so the inside could move freely. If I ever have a garden, I would definitely try and make one of these.
