Sunday 25th March
Breaking in of a New Reds WR7 Nitro Engine On Sunday with Corin ahead of the Bank Holiday Weekends Racing to Start off the HNMC Summer Series.
There were a few issues with the starter box which wasn't set up quite right, but we got around that with a little perseverance.
Break in went well and then Corin beached the car in the Big Muddy Puddle while I was changing the memory card in the GoPro which was a shame to see the car covered in wet drippy mud on an engine break in. But we had a good laugh.
Please note this is not a HOW TO but a video documentation of what transpired during the engine break in procedure we used.
Overall once we got around the issues with the starter box set up we started the engine after priming really easy.
We run 4 tanks of fuel on the starter box gently revving the engine like we would to warm it up before we start a qualifying round.
Heating from 60°c up to around 95°c as our ambient temps were around 10°c.
After the 4 tanks on the box we started to drive the car gently down the road and back keeping a check on temps now and then.
We run a few tanks at quarter throttle.
Then a few at half throttle.
A few at three quarter throttle.
Then finally a few just hitting full throttle and backing off.

Not sure why but I love breaking in new engines. I have only broken in 2 to date but...I have had no issues. Thank you youtube and everyone making videos ;]

Same for me. I’ve broken in several engines but I do find myself enjoying breaking in engines also. Idk why but I do

Where do you race?

During the first four tanks when you rev the engine on the starter box what would the limit of revs be? Half? Quarter throttle?

I personally use the full opening of the carb which when fully open still won’t produce a full throttle capability of the engine at this point because of the needle settings. It’s more like a quarter throttle. If your too gentle you will find it will keep loading up with oil and will keep stalling so you need to keep the revs up enough and you need to keep opening up the throttle to clear the build up of oil. Obviously build up the revs as gently as the engine will allow and if it’s loading up with oil and stalling I open up the carb more to clear the engine of its build up of unburnt oil in the crank case. Hope that kind of makes sense.

Passionate about RC I understand thank you! Also as far as temps go what is the minimum and maximum you recommend for the entire break in? I have reached 120C and the engine never ran right after.

bboydrummer1 I normally use an engine warmer to get to around 60c then warm up by the procedure ideally to 85c+the ambient temperature on the day. So we were aiming for 95c with this engine break in. With the reds engines depending on the weather I find it’s hard to even get up to that temperature. Not sure about other engines.

Passionate about RC My LRP .32 reaches 120C now it easily gets up to 140C but it seems happy there and the compression is still there, which is quite odd. One more question, How many tanks/hours was your entire break in?

bboydrummer1 at the end of the video we show the stopwatch with the overall time we ran for which was just over 2 hours and about 2 litres of fuel.
