Flies that worked today: pink thin fly worked for the guy catching pinks!
Session Notes: I bought a new 8 weight fly fishing setup rig for salmon and steelhead fishing. I bought from Michal & Young fly shops an Echo Ion 7/9 reel, an Echo Lift 8 weight fly rod, and I love my new fly line the Scientific Anglers Amplitude Anadro with AST Plus. This fly line is overweighted 1.5x for easier casting of heavy rigs like nymph rigs and streamers. I also bought an intermediate polyleader but I needed to wait to buy a 3 mm tippet ring so I could put it on. I fished the mouth of the capilano river at the ambleside beach ocean estuary and got some really great advice from another fly fisher who caught two pink salmon on a small pink fly! I had a fun time and can't wait to hook up to my first salmon on the new echo fly fishing rod and reel setup.

I wonder if a heavier weighted line works better for roll casts? Thinking about buying that same line you did.
@RosinFlyFishing
@RosinFlyFishing 2 года назад
Hey Peter! This is also called a 'nymph' line as I believe it's meant to do things like turning over heavier rigs and I assume that applies to roll casting as well. But it's pretty new to me and while I love it, just make sure you base your decision on more than my anecdotes!! :)
@iancollings5047
@iancollings5047 2 года назад
Depends on the rod. A faster action rod can often take one extra weight up which will load the rod earlier and easier and definitely helps with roll casting. I have a sage xps 8 weight but run a 9 wt line on it. However a slower action rod can get overloaded and will be difficult to cast so be careful.

Congrats on the new rig! Hbd..I'm an avid lake fisherman, and I'm hoping to start salmon fishing asap. I'm wondering if you happen to notice any of the other fly fisherman keeping their rod tip in the water while stripping in the fly? On the lake I fish, we can always spot a river fisherman just starting out on lake fishing by two things: first is fishing a floating line in the wind. The other is not putting the tip in the water. The reason is much improved sensitivity to fly. You can feel more strikes. I have no clue if this is true for saltwater....Good luck and love the videos! Maybe see you on the water one day.
@RosinFlyFishing
@RosinFlyFishing 2 года назад
Thanks Ed! I'm 100% sure I should be doing that with my tip down/in the water! I just suck at fly fishing! I believe the other fly fishermen in the ocean and river keep the tip very near the water. Good luck getting into salmon fishing! It still eludes me about 4 sessions in so far!! :)

I know from where I live, it's never cool to video other fisherman and post it on RU-vid. You can publicize your face online but people want to fish and be left alone. What about the guy who called in sick? So my question is, why do you feel the need to put fisherman in your videos? Nobody is asking to be in your videos. Fishing is supposed to be an escape. Not some guy recording everyone on the beach fishing and publicizing those people.
@RosinFlyFishing
@RosinFlyFishing 2 года назад
I always ask for consent for the individuals who I chat with or look at their fish and sometimes they say yes and if they say no I blur it out if they are featured and recognizable. But the reality is when you are in public spaces and in the background of people's videos or photos you are giving consent simply by being in that space . I'm not trying to take advantage of anyone, I simply want to collect some video while I'm fishing in public and if it's busy, then other people will end up in the video. If fishers want an escape with no people around, they will have to travel farther away than the most popular fishery inside our city (that river is the most popular fishing river within a 2 hour drive). Also as a side note, I take zero responsibility if someone decides to skip their obligations and go fishing and get caught lol. But the chances of this seem pretty miniscule. Why do I like to record other fishers sometimes? It's part of my experience on the water that I'm trying to share through video. I just happen to really enjoying fishing and sharing my adventures. I think a good proportion of folks would agree with your POV on this and I respect where you're coming from. Cheers, and I hope you're catching some nice fish :)

@@RosinFlyFishing Nobody goes out fishing to get recorded by someone. You use other people's fish for thumbnails. As if to say you caught it. That's click bait. You monetize? Tell the person that you're going to monetize their catch. Tell them you're going to use their fish as a thumbnail for your video to get traffic to your video. Correct me if I'm wrong but you're treating this like a business. You can go into some tackle stores in you ask them do they want to get recorded by somebody using a GoPro? Does a fisherman want to show you their fly so you can publicize it? Their techniques? You're the only one benefiting from it. Your viewers benefit? Well maybe they can get out there and learn for themselves or figure it out. It's your channel then you show them an educate them how to do it don't use other people to educate. I have no idea why you feel the need to include other fishermen in your videos. If it's about you then make it about you not what other people are doing. And also maybe you should realize that nobody walks around recording everybody for a reason. You don't see many videos around for a reason. People don't like it. Do your own thing. Leave everyone else out of it.

@@goldeneyeforevercom I genuinely am sorry this bugs you so much, I'll keep that in mind in the future as another fisher's perspective. I try to balance my own desires to make fun fishing videos that people enjoy with what I'm willing to do to make that happen. You might be surprised, but I do ask for people's consent to record their fish as well. I've had people say no, and I respect that and I don't include them or their fish. I believe I have a fair balance of asking for consent when appropriate. As for clickbait, yes I do this. I try to be genuine about it lately by including in the thumbnail or title that it's not my fish so that people know right away. But the reality is people make snap judgements on videos based on the pictures and I do want my videos to get clicked. I'm not monetized yet, but I hope to be soon, and all the while I want to make better videos, tell better stories, engage more people to go fishing and check out new waters and have fun outdoors. I'm trying to keep the balance of all things. It's tough on pressured waters.

@@RosinFlyFishing I'm not trying to ruin your enjoyment. I stand by what I said though. Nobody goes fishing to be recorded and posted online by a complete stranger. What you are doing is like negative billing. You record everything and post pretty much everything regardless if there are other people in the shot. Unless somebody contacts you, I'm sure you will just post it. People are easily identifiable in the background. I think it's disrespectful to shoot and ask questions later. I suspect nobody knows you have a GoPro strapped on and recording everything. If you showed up with a big video camera that everyone there would notice? You better believe people would probably run you off the beach. Nobody is knocking your desire to record fishing. However this idea that you are entitled to record other people because it's some public place? That doesn't fly. I will say again. Nobody is going out into nature which is what fishing is, and wanting to get recorded by some stranger and then posted online. Clearly some of the areas that you're fishing at you should be leaving your recording equipment at home. And if you are monetizing or plan on monetizing, then you should get full disclosure to the people's footage that you're using of their fish. If you ever came across somebody like me and asked if you could video my fish I'd be asking you to pay me for it. Why should anything be free? I get most fisherman may not know what RU-vid is all about or making money off of videos. The next issue you're going to come across is that you're going to take your video and tell everybody about some great fishing spot and advertise it. Again, I'm personally not trying to spoil your enthusiasm but I'm just trying to say that you're crossing a line with some of this. The ethics of fishing is what you might consider it. I would only suggest you reach out to people like Fishing with Rod and ask him how he feels about filming at fishing spots or when other fishermen are in the background. Sorry if this comes off harshly. Not my intent but not sure how else to say it.

@@goldeneyeforevercom @goldeneyeforevercom @goldeneyeforevercom I can tell you are trying to educate, which I appreciate since many on the internet don't display very much patience with others they disagree with - so I just want to say thank you for that courtesy. There are a couple really interesting things we can touch on here though: Fishing with Rod might be a great comparator since he sometimes fishes very popular systems. He has multiple videos fishing the Vedder with dozens of other anglers around that end up on video in the background. He often has his tripod and big camera plus GoPros. Sometimes it's his buddies nearby and sometimes people know him but it's obvious other times that there are other people he doesn't know since the vedder gets so packed. When you hook onto a fish sometimes the other anglers have to pull lines out and move quickly to accomodate a running fish, and I would be pretty shocked if he had any kind of disclosure forms being signed for any of these fishers or footage. Usually it's just his own or his buddies fish but I feel like I've watched him record others a bit further on fighting fish... Rod is super cool and very nice, but even so I really don't think he would feel that individual consent is necessary in those packed waters scenarios. But I absolutely love the idea of reaching out to him and getting his take on this, so thanks for that idea! Now regarding monetizing, lets just say if it was all about money I wouldn't be doing fishing. The market is super niche and it's a grind for the time input, you really have to love it. As for monetizing in the context of showing fishing spots/hotspotting, I'm curious what you think about the pay wall put up by fishing guides? A person is allowed to find out about better spots and new waters if they have the money and willingness to pay a guide? But it's taboo to get that information for free from the internet (youtube videos, blog posts). That's totally backwards to me. Curious what you think about the paywall put up by guides... I find fishing ethics interesting, and often find myself challenging some traditional and widely held 'rules'. But recording others and showing them catching fish, aside from close-ups with consent for human and fish, isn't something I've considered as much since nobody so far has come forward or expressed any concern. I'll try reaching out to Rod and I'll let you know what he thinks if I hear back from him :)
