serious talk: for the most part, Grimm Guy beats Adder by just disrespecting Sideslip for the most part. Keep the brawl going as long as possible. Sideslip does little if everything's just already in range as-is, and if everything you have in range is half dead or has to move into a vulnerable position to act on its increased range... what good did Sideslip really do? It's very smart play.

I feel like Grimm became the equivalent of a new chess dubious gambit. He sucks but if you dont REALLY know how properly counter you get fucked. Which btw, while rare, there are multiple cases of International Masters and sometimes even Grand Masters, both being people whose job is playing chess, falling from questionable trappy moves in blitz (3 minutes) chess.

GG clearly studied under the Zapf Brannigan school of sending wave after wave of men at his opponent. The material advantage towards the end was really something to see.

I would like to paraphrase this by saying that I hadn't meant disrespect, I have recently started playing casual advance wars and have learnt some really great stuff from you, and in particular, the lessons that I've learnt from Grim Guy is that the person who sets the pace of the match *will* have a chopper advantage that will divide resources. In particular, I've been playing Kindle as a very aggressive territorial CO and have found some success in this that I have found fascinating. Move in, fight aggressively, and tech up aggressively ensures that, despite being outnumbered, they can't respond meaningfully to my actions. Interestingly, Adder's reach advantage is nullified with how the Grim guy plays; all the important units are already in the slugging range, so it's fine. Just Grim's superior day-to-day means that every time Adder initiates an engagement, Grim *kills* a tank and can keep the damaged unit for later. Over time he can build up a significant unit advantage that can overcome Poland completely. I mean, just look at the infantry engagements, sure Adder can cripple a lot of infantry, but he lacks the punch to kill off units significantly, which means Grim can smash in. I mean, Grim guy doesn't even allow Poland to start establishing walls; he challenges him to a slugfest and dictates the pace of the game for most of the match and eventually, through getting enough clean kills, was able to overwhelm him despite them being equal in value for much of the battle. This should change how we view the matchup. Sure, the extra movement is excellent for getting the first strike, but first strikes matter less if he can hit harder consistently. I argue that Jake or even Jess is a better match-up because they get a boost in range, but the increase in damage output is enough to start one-shotting units in retaliation, thanks to his light defence. Just this beginning to make me wonder whether Adder is a good match for Grim or whether he's merely overrated and that Grim is much better than we give him credit for. Just underestimate him significantly because, well, he's hard to use. Either that or the map is working against Adder, which I felt was true last time. Grim guy knew Adders power was finding engagements, so he just opened his chest to him and hit him harder constantly, so the extra reach didn't add too much.

I really want to believe that behind Grimm Guy's true identity were the designer of the CO and, tired of hearing that "he sucks" or "he's under Tier 4 COs", decided to show to us, pitiful mortals how to play Grimm

Grimm’s low HP units are so valuable for bait units and placing them on properties and blocking. If you spend a 10 HP unit to finish a 1 HP Grimm, you’ll get destroyed by his follow up. It’s the same case for his 3 HP units on a property. Grimm’s follow up is a devastating first strike on a property.

Inf on grim insta die to everything so taking 3 loss on an inf is not a big deal compared to 1-2 on a tank. Also that 1-2 hp ends up really good as he chain kills adder's tanks. The chaining being worse for Adder then it is Grim because Grim ends up with a few tanks after. Honestly I'd keep letting Poland chain because he is down 3-4 tanks a chain. Yet Grim has to pay for repairs but it lets him run more infs instead with out being down units.

I'm not a world-class player, so there's probably something I'm missing about the maneuver at 12:41, but doesn't this move from Po1and play directly into Grimm Guy's strategy? He wants to force brawls to negate any Adder positional play. Getting the tank chains tangled together robs Sideslip of some of its potential impact, so I'm surprised that he made that choice.

Grimm Guy's use of close-quarters fighting was fairly brilliant. Adder's big appeal is his sideslip which SHOULD allow him to outmaneuver a CO like Grimm and pick off his units. The fact that Grimm Guy was already in range and was positioned to be able to easily counter Po1and's attacks meant getting outmaneuvered didn't matter.

I've learned more of Grimm here. Guy was and still uses threaten tactics (Attack my unit, I dare you.), but his whole usage of Grimm's weakness (defense) is turned into an efficient synergy. He attacks with the boosted damage, and takes the counter hit. This can leave Grimm on some low HP, but as long as its 1, that's perfect. Pull that 1 HP unit back and 1 of 3 things happen: 1. You attack and kill the weakened unit, and his tank chain from behind will come up and eat for free, so that he may repeat the process 2. You DON'T attack and he repairs it on a city to punish passivity, if he killed a unit and you didn't kill that 1 HP that caused it, he is building unit count lead. 3. You DON'T attack but you still have a lot of threats for him in the area, he'll keep it safe til fresh units from the tank chain come forward and just use those low HP units as emergency shields to press more offense. On the third option, the "efficient synergy" is that he straight up just used it as a pure offense unit, and a defensive unit all at once. Its low HP, so it doesn't matter to him, but it DOES matter to you. This is only possible on Grimm through perfect capture game, and positioning to win engagements and keep his unit lead. The whole risk Grimm runs when played this well, is that if he loses one serious main combat (i.e. the frontline/center of map) it all crumbles. It really speaks to how well he's actually doing. I commend Po1and here for being the first to be the ballsiest lab rat, just going straight into a slugfest with Grimm Guy so we can get an idea of how it goes. Not well. As stated in another comment, Grimm Guy is just disrespecting Sideslip by keeping things just in range at all times and using his great positioning to always have a follow up. Adder may not be the move as Grimm Guy is probably used to Adder match up by this point and just has plans ready for a lot of situations against him. I think Po1and should retry with another CO of that tier if Guy would have the rematch. That slugfest was the most entertaining match in awhile. Conventional Grimm counters won't work here, the only hope would be to "shock" him by using someone not expected, not that he won't be ready for it, but he might not have the same practiced flowchart he has against his perceived predators. Otherwise, HELL YEAH GRIMM GUY MATCH, LOVE SEEING THESE. Keep them coming, Mangs.

Fighting against Grimm is like getting in a fistfight against a guy in a wheelchair. You absolutely should be able to beat him, but there's no winning if you take the fight. Either you get your ass beat by a guy without functioning legs, or you beat up a disabled person. No matter what happens, you lose. Similarly, I feel bad for Poland. Either he beats Grimm Guy because it's a T4 CO, or he loses to a T4 CO. There is no victory for him, no matter how the match turns out.

My penny is on GrimmGuy being Akasha: Impeccable capture chains, unorthodox moves (delaying base cap, delaying the tower cap, self base-lock, sudden artillery against a tank chain and b-copters), the patience and self-control of a Buddha, and absolutely ruthless at exploiting openings. This might not be the only way, but it certainly is a fantastic way to become as good as Akasha: place yourself in strict scenarios with harsh limitations, in this case, permanently lower defense means you can't afford to make positional mistakes, and you need your calcs to be on point. Play around a bit like that. Now transfer that experience and fine positioning control to playing everyone else. You don't need alt accounts to practice, obviously, but if you happen to have a 100% winrate and would find it funny to keep it that way, using an alt to practice - and especially to practice extreme constraints where you anticipate you're likely to lose a lot - makes a lot of sense.

AI progress update. The AI understands and is rather good at calculating optimal strategies. Beat me already, but I am not that good. One problem I have is the CO powers. The AI doesn't really understand how to best utilize them and I have trouble making it work. Probably will have to make the AI fight itself using various COs, activating powers when ready, until it understands the optimal way and time to use them. I hoped I wouldn't have to do that yet, because it will take weeks.

GrimmGuy is like an ocean wave/tidal force. Big attack and then retreat, big attack, retreat etc. and since he conserves units, the next attack is always a little stronger than the last one.

Grimm Guy is really showing that a CO with a low skill floor can still have a high skill ceiling.

15:00 Those were very unfavorable engagements for Poland. He'd take Grimm's tank down to 3 or 4, and then in return his tank would be destroyed! He lost in both unit count and unit value here.

Wants privacy? Intentionally plays bad matchups to challenge himself playing just one CO so he can be countered? I mean, Voice of Akasha? Considering he plays relatively rarely multiple fun accounts seem to make sense for theory crafting and keeping his skills sharp.

Grimm does so much damage with hurt units. Taking a 2-3 hp tank, letting it repair one turn and then coming in with a knuckle duster makes it deal damage like a fresh tank from most other COs. Its an interesting conundrum; you can't let Grimm's injured units survive, but most cases you can't spare extra units to finish them off.

Petition for Mangs to get Grimm Guy use his super power 'one' time, and have mangs play grimm's theme when it happens!

I think the early tank from grimm guy had far more significance than mangs or the comments would suggest (nobody else has mentioned it). Allowed grimm guy to make the centre a "tank for tank exchange" chain without po1and having much choice and grimm guy being slightly better off after each exchange. Grimm guy dictates the build, area of battle and the pace to suit them far more than adder (who's co power was practically worthless throughout the match). Very calculated. Every one of grimm guys matches feels like grimm guy is playing a match-up he just understands better than the opponent. Fascinating matches, some of my favourites even, but i would be intrigued to see some players fight fire with fire (grimm vs grimm) rather than use adder (who, hot take, i do not see as a cointer to grimm, at least on this map). Also, me need more grandmaster tournaments! I started following this channel because of those.

Bit of stupid pondering, but do you think Sonja would counter Grimm to an extent? Counter Break completely neuters Grimm's offense *and* exploits his terrible defense when it's up, even when he has one of his powers active, and her power meter is even smaller than Grimm's so she can get a ton of uptime on it- or just hang onto it when Grimm has meter to counter his powers.

Shows up out of nowhere, fucks your shit up, refuses to elaborate, and then disappears for months on their main account... I think I know who they may be;)

I think grimm guy should stay anonymous and heres why: Even if grim guy is within the top 10 of players as soon as his main is found out his core strategy that makes him unique is gone and more players will pull apart hiw playstyle by over studying his games.

Hello General Mangs! I stumbled across your channel soem weeks ago and nostalgicly dove back to advance wars! It's great to see that the community kept the license alive by creating a (semi?) official version of the game to play against people online! I even downloaded your rom to rediscover the game. There's one thing I was wondering though. Where can I find 1v1v1(v1) or even 2v2 games? I can't seem to find any on your channel. Is it just not popular enough or maybe there are combos too OP to allow anything other than 1v1?

Damn, I thought this was gonna be the game we see him lose. Everyone talks about how Adder just zones him out but that was not enough. This is the way Grimm was meant to be played!

This is the same map I played in AWBW. It was my first game in AWBW and I played with Adder then lost. Oof.

Yup same mistake as the last vid, instead of being patient he allowed grimm to counter. If you want to beat grimm you must strike his best units first and do so in a way that prevents him from using his power to delete your army. If you want to play a more aggressive playstyle like that then you should play someone who can throw fodder at him such as colin or someone who has increased defensive/offensive stats. Hell a CO with 20% increased defense technically has a 10% firepower advantage over grimm but you have to be mindful of grimms power. IMO I think I might even just pick Max into Grimm and go toe to toe since his lowered defense would cripple him by that much. But the key to these battles is who gets off the first strike. Never take the bait.

You can view a Grimm v Adder match as very much a heavyweight v lightweight boxing match. The vast majority of the time the lightweight is not getting hit and whittling down the heavyweight into submission. But then there exists those rare heavyweights who do not waste energy and exhaust themselves in bad trades. They take their time, slowly and methodically, to hem in the lightweight into a position where he can do the serious damage. Then it is all over.

That second Knuckleduster was just BRUTAL, 40% of adders army is gone by the end of it.

A 3 HP tank has a much value as a 10 HP tank. Pull back for repairs, then use that tank to finish off one that got hit by a full HP tank. Morale of the story, make sure you kill Grimm Guy's units, else it will come back to bite you. Catch 22.

Small question: on 13:50, is it worth it to use a infantry unit as a shield for the (4) tank or the movement for other tank too much to dodge?

Fighting Grimm is interesting. If his lines aren't perfect, he loses. However, I am starting to think that a perfect Grimm player is almost unstoppable. It's just so hard to do it.

Does negative defense exist? Or are plains just clamped to 0 effective defense for Grimm?

I noticed that Po1and counter attacked right after he got hit is a mistake. Perhaps if he held back a little and have slightly more units he could have won some, if not most, of the engagements.

I think Poland's play at 21:17 is to force Grimm to take forces away from covering the vulnerable base in the south east. It didn't work, but I can see why it was done.

One of the things I like about the AWBW competitive scene is, well, how competitive it is right now. People like Incuggarch are insanely powerful, but even the number one player isn't an unbeatable, completely dominant advance wars god like you might see in some other competitive vidya (for example, Flash from Starcraft 1), he's just really really *really* good. And so its very curious and up in the air when people like Grimm Guy come around, smash up the rankings, and let everyone know just how little they know about the game by surprising us all with a CO usage like this, lol. Its very cool to see. I have little doubt he at least has a good chance against people like Incu, and it makes me wonder how much farther the AW competitive scene has to grow and develop if we're still getting big surprises like this. TL;DR, the implications of Grimm Guy are really cool for AW's competitive scene imo, and AWBW is great right now lol.
