I'm very chuffed for this news, and can't wait for the release! I used to sell the Atari 8-bit computers in a small shop where I worked in about 1981/82 and loved them... Bought an original 800 and adored it; I preferred it to the C64 and Spectrum. The Speccie's graphics could be 'intricate', but that bloody colour-clash ruined them for me (even though I still have a couple of old machines!!). I love the "The C64" and have the maxi - so many memories, and I've been thinking for so long that the Atari 8-bit micro's really deserved a bit of love (Atari were and still are all about the original console - which I also love) so it's fab. to see the old computers get a bit of spotlight! You can bet your life I'll be getting one of these; so many old memories...so many colours, and that sound!! 😃 Love it! 🥰
I'm very excited about this release as this was my first computing experience as a kid. You need to try out seven cities of gold, then you'll understand why.. Masterpiece!
No one in North America wants a Spectrum or Amstrad mini. The Atari computers were much better known here. I guess Retro Games Ltd. is more interested in that market.
The XL and XE series of that computer line also sold well in continental Europe, especially in East Germany, Poland and Czechoslovakia (they were also somewhat popular on my side of the iron curtain, on par with the Amstrad CPC here in West Germany). Plus the Amstrad and Spectrum really do not have the hardware for console or arcade style games (although I admire what talented programmers were able to achieve nonetheless).
What are they thinking! £99.99!! Sorry but this will flop in Europe maybe sell better in US. There are plenty of other options available thesedays at 1/3 of the price. I am looking forward to the A500 Maxi just due to the fact it is more usuable and practical.
I was curious, but didn't knew what to expect. Was a bit suprised to see an Atari 400 mini. It would make more sense to me if it was a 800xl mini. I'm from Portugal, and Atari 400 and 800 were never popular here.... The 800 XL sold relatively well, but always trailing the Spectrum, the C64, and the CPC range. Personally, not very interested in this machine. I imagine it's targeted for the North Americans. Anyway, thank you for the video 😊
Hmmm, underwhelmed to be honest and that is down to the fact I've never heard of the system. I suppose when you have no knowledge or nostalgia for the device then it isn't going to get the juices flowing. I know many people were hoping for the ZX Spectrum but the one system missing from the market for me is the Amstrad. I seriously hope they deliver this in the near future. Now that I do have nostalgia for. Great news for Atari fans though and probably going to be attractive to the US market.
I'll still get one (in fact I've already pre-ordered) as I'm curious, and Atari is definitely a gap in my retro gaming catalogue, but like I said in the video I'm very disappointed. I was totally convinced we was getting a Speccy!
That’s really more on you than them, that you don’t know *the most influential* computer of the 8-bit era, the tech from which led two of the most used mechanics in personal computing, today...
Love these videos. This one is a pass for me as I have no nostalgia for the system. I'm relieved in a way as there are far too many new games coming out that i want to play and I don't think I could give time to a new mini console. Fingers crossed for a Spectrum mini for Christmas along with a clear backlog 😊
Maybe you have to be American to appreciate this. The only one I would be interested in would be a Spectrum as I have the Amiga 500 mini. Playing the Atari would not bring back any memories (as I don't have any) like the Spectrum or Amiga does.
Yeah quite possibly! I think I'd convinced myself it was going to be a speccy, so that's why I'm so disappointed. But I'm more enthused by the fact that you can load your own games.
I would have thought the zx would have more market pull, Was big in most countries inc russia many machines to Emulate could have include sam coupe ect. But who knows they might be still working on that.
The Speccy market is saturated by the "Next" plus the size of the Homebrew scene for both machine is almost the same. Speccy game's come in greater numbers while quality games in the Atari machine are far more. Hardware wise, the Atari market is huge with a tone of different hardware upgrades and solutions. When we are talking about hardware , we are dealing with people willing to spend money and that is essential for the creators of the mini replica.
Don't have any love for Atari consoles, apart from the classic arcade cabinets I remember from my younger years. Don't think I'll be buying this one as there are no games that appeal to me on this system. It's a cool piece of tech though, and congrats to all Atari fans! I'll be holding off for the full sized Amiga.
@neb6 The line also sold well in Europe, albeit mostly the later (cost-reduced and more 80s looking) XL and XE machines. These lack two of the four joystick ports though, and e.g. M.U.L.E. is best played with four players. My main gripe is that it doesn't have a functional keyboard, since "Star Raiders" as the killer app requires one.
What a weird choice, as i would have thought a Amstrad or Speccy would have been way bigger pulls, and i can't remember anyone who had one of these........very strange choice.
Looks like they are trying to please the American market…. I hope it sells well , but I won’t be buying it. No need for an Atari 8 bit emulator when you have a C64
Definitely not buying this. What’s next an Oric?! A zx spectrum or msx would have been a better release. The only way I’d buy this is when it’s in the reduced section for £30
No Atari 7800. Them joysticks are blister inducing and the console looks like an old fax machine. However, the 800 is a computer, so is xe, so plenty of 8 bit computer games, ports and homebrew potential. Not a total disaster. It might be a chance to save your cash for the Amiga Maxi. I’d only buy a used model as things stand.
Can't see it, given it would compete with the various Atari manufactured retro 2600 consoles available right now. The architecture of the home computer range (on which the 5200 is directly based) was a much more realistic option for Retrogames. Together with thier C&D against the Polish guys making an unlicenced 800xl rejig recently, the 400/800/ST seemed like the most likley candidates to appear this year. Still want an Amiga Maxi though....
