25:15 - 25:40 this is such a dangerous and stupid statement to make. Meaning is unique to each person. You don't get to put your foot down and say something like "choosing to spend most of your time in virtual worlds is horrible" just because you yourself can't live that way. One thing I have learned over the years, is to never ever throw the baby out with the bathwater. Everyone will swing and miss sometimes, and some more than others, but that does not mean they can't also be right about other things. CEO's and board members will lie a lot because that is the kind of ecosystem they work in, with often a lot at stake. They will also have strong views and opinions, many of which you and I may not share. But who's to say if our own opinions are true, or theirs, or neither, or only partially? I have put effort in learning how to detect when someone is lying, and when they are sincere (even though that is seldom completely black or white), and used common sense and extra research to get as close as I could to what is true and real. I will not definitively close the door on alternative interpretations either because new information can change everything we think we know. You can learn a lot about yourself by becoming aware of what you react strongest too because it almost always points towards certain biases and prejudices. Objective self-observation is also one of the best starting points for learning to understand other people's behavior and reactions. You clearly have an issue with this: "we won't allow the commonfolk their life of leisure" And there is definitely truth in this view, but it is not the whole truth, yet you define a complete person and all she says on how they expressed one paragraph that was clearly expressed too strongly, but she is talking about a dystopian world. There is also truth in that statement of hers, even though it needs a lot more nuance than she offers. Either way, you both have a point, meaning it is neither black nor white.

We really don't have to wonder how people will spend their time if they aren't required to work 40+ hours a week. There are plenty of independently wealthy people who have the option to quit working, and don't. There are millions of retired people, some rather young, who no longer have to work. The question isn't whether people can find useful things to do with their time, it is only whether they can afford to.

You have to be very naive to think AI will lead to abundance to everyone 😂 the problem in the world is NOT shortage of resources, it's rather distribution of available resources.... AI enables a few people to gobble lots and lots of resources for themselves, exactly the opposite of giving abundant resources to everyone...... @@morezombies9685 people are depressed when they are unemployed because they don't have income and because we are taught that being employed is essential to self-esteem. The more production is separated from labor, and labor from income, the less those reasons for depression will apply. As for what people without traditional jobs will do with their time, that will depend on what they want to do. Some will do very little, and others will stay quite busy. The point of my comment is that it isn't theoretical, virtually everyone retires at some point, with income, and many of them stay quite busy.

Nah, these very board members were okay burning OpenAI to the ground just because they were losing authority to oversee the company. Not only that, but they were also adamant that GPT-3/4 is so dangerous that it should never be made public. So, if things worked out according to them, ChatGPT would have never been made, they would have destroyed the company, and we wouldn't be as close to developing AGI as we are now.

Those 'normal' people are looking for meaning, but freeing up their lives from work is just one aspect of that. Many of those who already do have more freedom and less daily concerns in their lives, actually spend much of their time doing meaningless things, and are not happy anyway. Yes, you can go out more, see the beach, etcetera, but that is not necessarily what people will do, nor will everybody be able to find meaning in those things, so she is not entirely wrong either about that. That has nothing to do with AI, though, but rather with the current state of humanity, which is strongly related to the way we raise and educate children. This goes much deeper than people realize, and is not just about things like better schooling and equal opportunities. This actually goes straight into the core of what humans are, and how they really function, for which we need a very different kind of raising and educating than we have been receive for the last 100 years or more.

Without your channel it would've probably been like a tornado of information speeding by over and over. Chaos. Which actually helps to support why today I had to comment on the "for people that are smart enough" narrative. Those fools create and mistake lack of intellecgence by insulting peoples' in the first place. I seriously feel that has always been why many bow out; not because they lack understanding but rather they are offended the speaker doesn't simply speak. All this molly coddling the past 20 years has been so detrimental to everyone. People need to treat each other better and stop beating around the bush. Wasting time is dumb. Here's a rule to live by: Say what you do and do what you say because in the end it is what it is. Along the way may we all get as good as we gave. Thank you again Wes. Appreciate you. Wes, I think the issue (@13:00) is that you're taking everything that Sam or the Marketing team says as being true, and Toner's interview really reveals that nothing he's saying can be trusted. He had a vested interest (which she showed...he owns the dev fund and therefore has a financial interest in monetizing the company). I'm not sure I buy this argument that they needed to go public to get the money. And your point at @18:30 is valid, but the issue is that that research can be done without deploying it and using it in law enforcement...that's what testing is for. There is no need to rush it into use without testing it first, but that's what Sam and others are doing. And regarding her point...yes, we do have complete anarchy now. There are no regulations on what AI can do...that's the definition of anarchy. Criticizing her for being anecdotal is also bad faith analysis--this isn't a research presentation. It's an interview--and also, if she is aware of these instances via her research, it would violate the ethical standards that govern research (there is a formal review process with actual regulatory boards you have to go through to do research involving living people) if she were to be more specific. Your critique boils down to "she didn't give evidence that she's legally not allowed to give." That's not a valid critique imo. Your bare assumption that AI is obviously or automatically better than the human failings in the system is worse than anecdotal...it's purely speculative. It's also not very convincing--you're advocating that superiority of AI in a use case you don't understand. And frankly, you're attempt to spin her interview off based on a conspiracy theory about EA is shocking. I've been following this change since it started, but this video makes you sound like you're off the deep end. Toner's talk was a bog standard normal talk to anyone's that ever listened to an academic speaking about a topic they study. Super disappointed that one of my favorite channels has turned to conspiracy theory stuff.

How many people has to quit OpenAI and speak out against the company for lacking sufficient focus on safety, and how much more indifferent must peoples reaction to these whistleblowers have to be, before people start recognizing how such "double rhetoric" is a necessary evil? Instead we focus all our attention on trying to question, debunk and malign the whistleblowers and dissident ex-employees of these companies. It might be a good idea to try to understand the concerns of people like Yudkowsky before we dimiss them as crazy; that would also make them less motivated to chose "deception" as a strategy to ensure that we develop and deploy AI in a way that is safe and beneficial for everyone.

ChatGPT's response: Yes, Sam Altman was effectively fired from Y Combinator. Although it was officially presented as him stepping down from his role as president in 2019, insiders have revealed that the organization's founder, Paul Graham, personally dismissed Altman. The reasons behind this decision included Altman's prioritization of his personal projects, such as OpenAI, over his responsibilities at Y Combinator, leading to concerns that he was not fully committed to the core business of the incubator [3 cited sources - GigaZine, Futurism, The Silicon Review]

Well - my question to GPT - "was Sam Alman fired from Y Combinator?" delivered a very different answer (fake news?) ChatGPT: Sam Altman was not fired from Y Combinator. He served as the president of Y Combinator from 2014 to 2019 and then transitioned to focus on other ventures, including his role at OpenAI. However, he did face a significant firing in his career, but it was from OpenAI, not Y Combinator. Altman was unexpectedly fired from his position as CEO of OpenAI in November 2023 by the board of directors. This move was shocking to many, given his prominent role and contributions to the company's success. The board cited reasons related to communication and trust issues, though specific details were not fully disclosed, leading to much speculation and discussion within the tech community (Hacker News) (Hacker News) (Buzzsprout).

😂😂😂 Well said. We actually have an ecosystem in place called the capitalist economy in which people with psychopathic traits have the best chances of success. That is why we currently need a strong government to balance things out. Sadly, capitalism has taken over the government, so we are on our way to hell. Capitalism as we see it today is far too one-sided and will destroy itself, probably taking at least half the population with it when it falls. We actually need a self-correcting economy that works for a truly civilized society, so that we don't depend so much on a government interference. That's the ideal: a small government, and a truly self-correcting economy that functions well locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally.

AI could potentially be the most effective way a corporation or government could spy on citizens. Each person has their own digital friend that they share everything with. As much as I invite the criticisms of Altman and believe we need to scrutinize his every step, I also believe he is the perfect person for this job and that no one is a better fit. Just hear me out here! I believe that the worst thing we could do right now, looking at the best interests for the entire world, is to be overly cautious and safety-oriented in regards to AI. Which sounds insane, I know. However, people VASTLY underestimate just how fucked of a situation we are in right now, humanity is in, and how dire our situation is. In a perfect world where China wasn't aiming to wipe us off the map and establish world dominance, or the Climate Crisis wasn't threatening civilizational collapse and subsequent chaos and mass death in horrific numbers far beyond comprehension, or the US wasn't facing division running so deep that it threatens its future immensely... then yeah, be as careful as need be, take all the precautions, let's rethink it all and figure out how we all want to move forward. Unfortunately, we do not live in such a world and time is of the essence. We need to go all in on AI, we can't be second-guessing any of it, we can't be stifling its progress in any way, shape, or form, we simply do not have that luxury. And I know that is a difficult fucking thing to swallow, and it is terrifying to put one's trust into something as seemingly chaotic and unknown as AI, and it raises tons of questions and concerns, but I insist on this point. We have no choice now, there is no going back, we need to fully commit and go all in on AI, as it's the only shot we have at making it through these next 10-15 years in one piece. So that being my viewpoint, Sam is pretty much the perfect person to fill that role, no? Sam doesn't back down in fear or think about things in terms of safety going forward; he just sees things in the larger picture and he just goes all in on it, and I think that's exactly what we need. We don't need any of these people who are saying all these things about safety and concerns over safety and concerns and concerns and concerns and worries and worries and worries when we don't have the luxury to be addressing those things. We don't have the time. We don't have the time in so many fucking ways....
