“I am going to marry,” the thought itself brings to mind, a lovely wondrous time of fun with family and friends. It’s every girl's dream to make the marriage full of cherished moments. Do these happy memories sometimes become haunting ones? Yes, they do. When the word ‘Dowry’ wriggles in. It’s 2024 and the dowry system still breathes and thrives in India. When women are making their mark in the world, there are educated and independent women who are still laden with the dowry burden and that’s the harsh truth. Every hour, a tragic dowry death is reported in India. “Breaking Silence is the one and only solution,” but it needs to be broken with a steely strength. Today in this Brave Conversations, Sakshi shares her experience of having done just that. Standing up with the belief of what Maya Angelou said in her quote, “Each time a woman stands up for herself, without knowing it possibly, without claiming it, she stands up for all women.”
Sakshi Kathuria, a young, talented and passionate woman in an inspiring TEDx Talk. Sakshi has earned a PhD in Marketing through a scholarship and an alumnus of University in Delhi. Her research in the area of marketing, consumer behavior and sustainability has gained recognition in esteemed journals and conferences across the globe. She has carved for herself a promising academic career. Currently, Sakshi is an Assistant Professor and Marketing Communication Chair at the Fortune Institute of International Business (FIIB). Apart from teaching, Sakshi also provides career counselling to her students. In February 2020, Sakshi entered into an arranged marriage. Like all women expect, Sakshi also looked forward to trust, love and respect in the new phase of her life. Domestic violence, dowry demands, demeaning insults and disrespect are what she faced. Sakshi shares her journey of breaking the silence of overcoming societal norms. This is Sakshi’s crusade to encourage girls to be steely in their strength, have conversations with themselves and take firm steps to retain their dignity.
