Breaking-in a Lycoming IO-360 in a 1961 Mooney M20B. This video is longer than I like but I had a tough time editing it down while still catching the experiance. The total flight time ended up being 2 hours and 20 minutes.

Only pilot I know who thinks flying is boring

Have you seen Mike Busch's video on break in procedures? Really well done. How has the engine performed for you in the years since? Anything you'd do differently if you were re-doing the procedure today?

Yes, I have seen Mike Busch's video. If I were to do it again I might vary the RPM a little more often. I did change my RPM from time to time but I have always wondered if I did it enough. My engine is still running great and not burning any oil though so I guess my break-in procedure was OK.

Mark, thanks for your vid! We are currently looking at an older Mooney with 0 SMHOH and this is very helpful. Yep, this is what I've heard. Run 'em rich and cool for a few hours and then squared for 6 or so. Really enjoyed hearing your thought process.

Thanks, it is a lot of fun.

I was quoted $21,000 but it ended up being $23,000 as my crank needed to be replaced. I ended up going with one of the higher quotes due to the good reputation of the shop. This may seem like a lot but it probably added around $20,000 to the value of the plane and should last me until I give up flying. As I said in my "cost of ownership" page, people spend a lot more on cars, trucks and travel trailers without thinking about it. Flying is not cheap but it is also not only for the rich.

Dare I ask what your overhaul ran? No problem if you'd rather not say. I found you via your "cost of ownership page." Thanks for sharing! Beautiful flight!

I considered selling my run out Mooney and getting a low time on instead of rebuilding. Had I done so, I would be about $10,000 ahead. I decided to just rebuild mine knowing that I have a good airfraim. Buying a plane with a low time engine is a good way to go. Good luck.

Sometimes the price for peace of mind knowing the air frame and whats been done is hard to put a number on.But 10k in the GA world isnt so bad and considering the amount of time you can fly and it'll still be a "low time"plane it will average out to less ;)

That's really cool. What did you use to record you audio? Need an exterior shot of that plane.

I have an audio patch cord that plugs into the plane's intercom. It runs directly into the GoPro. After that flight I added a second mic to pickup background sounds. I have not posted any videos with the new setup but eveRide flew with me on his West Coast Adventure and should be posting something soon. I have not asked him but hopefully the audio turned out OK. It is hard to find a good camera shot in a tight airplane. I have experimented with a small thumb camera taped on the exterior but have not been happy with the video.

Oh Cool! You're the guy he flew with. I've seen that video of him and his hat in his trailers.

Ride AMAP It was a lot of fun. He did a great job flying the plane - I think he is a natural. That is true with a lot of guys who ride bikes although he was better than most.

what type of oil do you use to break in?
@markgunnison

I used a break-in oil recommended by the engine shop. Off hand I can't remember what it was.

Did you get the cylinder head temp issue sorted out ?
@markgunnison
@markgunnison 7 лет назад
Not really. It is always hot for the first takeoff of the day. Later takeoffs are not as bad for some reason. Fuel flow is the same but it is hotter for that first takeoff. I have learned to just not worry about it. From talking around it is not that uncommon for the early Mooney's to do this.

Mark Gunnison I see and it may clear up as the engine sees more hours
