awesome video, I use to live in Gulf Shores but live in Pensacola now. Landed at Fairhope many times when a student pilot. I'm a rusty pilot looking to buy a plane this year and a A&P with my I.A.

Kristoffer, Nice job on the video. I am sure I will contact Lycoming and get what they have to say on a break-in of one of their engines but this gives me a good idea of what I am in for. They say my factory rebuilt engine is on the way so I sit and wait. Have a great week and once again thank you for the time and effort you put into these videos.

@@BaronPilot Yes I would think it would be as well. I will read up a little before. Engine was delivered today and is sitting in my shop. I have to wait until the end of the weekend to bring it to be installed as they are putting new blacktop in front of the hangers and on the taxiway, so no driving on it. Have a great weekend.

Great video on how to properly break- in new Continental Engines by Chuck. The break in process is more involved than I thought. You have to operate the aircraft according to the proper procedures during the break in period or you just wasted a lot of money. I had no idea what was involved ,so the video was extremely educational. Safe flight back to Punta Gorda!

Hi Chris, this was most interesting and informative. Your pilot could quite comfortably be behind a B 52 and fit right in. To record this and send around the world is gold. So much info could be lost, yet one can refer to his info again and again at a later date. Keep up these super videos.👍

30 years ago, had an awesome time rebuilding an Apache. It had sat for five years but long story short, run ups on the ground we blew both prop governors and bathed ourselves with fluid, they had froze up. Thankfully the spinners caught the chunks of metal. That was a fun plane to fly. The baron always reminded me of it, but with a whole lot more giddy up. Lol. I look at your baron and cant fathom all the tech there is now, I mean just mode c was a luxury then. DME was unheard of but ADF was sure nice to have....I miss flying, but I do not miss instructing....

Baron Pilot no they don’t, and it had one of those current “annuals” by friend wink wink kind of deals. We knew that but a twin for $5k was to good to pass up at the time. We put another $5k into it with avionics as well. Wish I had the plane now, but we sold it and bought a Seneca II and started a chart company. Ahhhhh good times, why I switched to law enforcement eventually ill never know.....lol

Great info here, Kris!! The break in here is similar to outboard, or inboard boat motor break in procedures, presumably because of the type of loads they see (constant, and heavy). Completely different from a car, motorcycle, or off-road motorcycle or ATV. I do believe car engines can be broken in the same way, but many will argue that fact (although it's difficult to do on public roadways, especially near cities - easier on a dynamometer, or on the open roads of the West ... but still illegal there, too). Of course, auto & motorcycle manufacturers want you to do the exact opposite, since they don't want to fix your vehicle on their dime under warranty. I could talk for hours about this stuff with Chuck, I'd bet. 😊 Thanks for sharing, Kris - been waiting for this one. 👍🍻

Oh yeah, when did they add turbos to your engines? LOL! Great video. A lot of 'old pilot's tales' went in the propwash from this video. I've heard everything up to 50 hours for proper break in, which I thought was kind of nuts. Thanks for posting this, Kris.

@@BaronPilot Did i hear the guy mention turbochargers just before shutdown ? both the seneca5 nd Da42 i let idle for 90 seconds before shutdown. the turbos on the original Theilert powered Da42 were known to fracture if not cooled properly. Barons have been illusive for me only managed 2 flights in a io-470 powered Be55. Have you had any issues with the Bag tanks in the wings?

Could someone explain more about oil level stabilization? If I have a 6 quart engine and I fill it every time it hits 4 quarts to 5, am I possibly waisting oil?

Typically a piston airplane engine will spit out excess oil through the breather tube. You can figure out what is proper for your airplane by waiting to see where it settles. (Assuming you don’t have any leaks of pressurization)

It's a gauge to determine how much power is being developed by the engine. The more air and fuel we can pump or pull into the cylinders, the more power the engine can develop (which makes us fly faster). When you can measure how much air pressure is in the induction system, just before the air / fuel mixture enters into the cylinders, you will have a good idea of how much power you are developing.

Break in is for cylinders, whether new or overhauled the cross hatch is fresh. the procedure is the same.

@@rossvidoni509 That's what I would assume as well. But with virgin alloys in the rotating assembly, it's not just worrying about seating the piston rings. I don't have the memory like I used to but thought I remembered that the break-in procedure was slightly different with all new components.

@@DougHanchard Not sure what differences between virgin nitrided steel and non-virgin but freshly nitrided steel would be but my guess is there are none. The piston and rings are the only part of the engine where two metal surfaces are designed to have metal to metal contact during the initial run in. They are also the only component directly affected by cylinder pressure. Every other part of the engine should riding on a film of oil. After break in the rings should cease to make metal to metal contact unless something has gone badly. It's why you can still see pronounced cross hatch on high time/mileage engines.

Great info/video. 😊 A sidenote and car wise: That's also why i like to purchase demo driven newer cars, because they are usely testet and broken in hard, and hopefully done when the engine is in the range of operating temperature.

you can be sure they are never run hard in the proper operating temp. Always hard when cold. I would never buy a demo car exactly for that reason.

@@tomekwrs Ok had good luck with mine then. No eye measurable oil consumption on dip stick, easy startup cold and warm and goes like a champ. It's a 2015 Ford Focus Titanium X 1.0 Ecoboost. Had it now in 2.5 years. Mileage now of 27000 miles soon. (43000 km.) I live and learn 😊 When i test new cars i always take it easy before it gets in operating temperature, then floor it often for the test and if i purchase a new car a hard break in when engine temps are in range of 180-210°f (82-95°c)

A lot of people use the term interchangeably. I’ve never seen a starter engine. So when I hear an engine being called a motor it gets confusing.
