"Up to 82.5 % of breast cancer survivors will experience symptoms of PTSD," Dr. Hibbert states. "Yet few will seek, find, and receive the help they need." "What can we do?"
Important points include:
-The 'war' of breast cancer is the trauma breast cancer brings
-Treatment isn't "over" when they say "you're done"
-"We're warriors not because we fight, or win, but because we show up..."
-Like war veterans, the war isn't over just because the "battles" are done
-It can feel like "everyone loves the warrior story, but no one wants to stick around for the aftermath of the war."
-The aftermath is the mental-emotional toll breast cancer & treatment take
-Warriors often feel alone, misunderstood & like others disappear after active treatment
-PTSD is extremely common, yet there are few resources & support options
-Depression, anxiety, and fear of recurrence are also common
-We can all help to better understand the warrior and be there "through the war and the aftermath"
-Suggestions for what medical/mental health providers, family support people, and breast cancer survivors can each do
