Thanks for watching, Mamas! How do you feel about breastfeeding? My daughter is almost 1 year old and is still nursing... I LOVE it, but also had bumps along the road. Here are all the things that made my breastfeeding journey so amazing - amzn.to/2GKvTJ4

My baby was born on February 25 and we have been breastfeeding since then. He had the perfect latch at first but now that we are home my breasts are hard in spots and I'm leaking alot. When he breastfeeds it is painful but when I remove the nipple to correct the latch, milk spills down his chin. I'm producing so much milk and he is definitely getting it (he's gained 6 oz in a day!) But it's just painful for me and I think it's because my latch isn't as good as it could be. He also falls asleep ALOT during feedings and I feed him once every hour with each breast for 5-8 minutes. Is this common for newborns? This too shall pass? I'm looking forward to seeing him sleeping through the night, last night was so hard on me I bought a pump and have been expressing the build up milk so that maybe during the night I can use this supply.

Such a great video! I'm a father to my 5 day old baby girl. It hurts me so much seeing my fiance in pain while breast feeding. We have been coached as much as possible while in the hospital on how to properly breast feed but nothing seemed to work. I took it upon myself (as both my baby and fiance were taking a nap) to do some research. Super glad I stumbled across this video! We just had a successful feeding with ZERO pain! Thank you so much Bridget!

Last night I was crying because it was so painful to breastfeed my 5-week-old son. I was getting frustrated at him and immediately at myself for doing so. I was also getting fearful for putting him to breast due to the pain and was going to hire a breastfeeding consultant later today. This video is my Christmas miracle. I just had a good breastfeeding session. From the bottom of my heart, thank you so much. You are an angel. Merry Christmas to you and your family.

Hello Bridget, You are doing a wonderful job explaining and showing Mamas all the tips and techniques for a great latch. My children are 24 and 26 (and the time went so fast. I literally feel like they were babies last year!) and both times nursing was difficult. I went to a few "lactation consultants and didn't receive half of the info you are teaching Mamas today. You are adorable, well-spoken, and knowledgeable in your trade. I am a lay doula and lay postpartum doula now getting credentialed as well as certifications for Childbirth Educator and a Lactation Consultant. Currently, I am having a career change as I apply to Midwifery Schools to become a Midwife in my 50's. I've ALWAYS known I love ALL areas of the birth world but had no idea about the need and diversity for which Birthworkers are needed. Thanks again!

Notes : Good latch - means no pain except initially, empty breast easily, wet diapers.. poor latch - sorry nipples throughout , lipstick shaped nipples, discoloration in nipples..Steps : 1) right time is quiet alert stage cues - eye contact, head bob, searching, lip smack..2) position - foot ball hold, front hold.. 3) don't support baby with ur shoulder, just relax ur shoulders n neck 4) don't have baby straight up n face side, their body should be aligned, tummy to ur tummy, 5) don't stretch up nipples to them 6) stimulate their philanthrum to make their mouth wide open, 7) if not compress ur breast to put their mouth 8)make sure their lips are fish liped aroubd areola 9) make sure they are able breathe with nostril properly.. patiently try n give it some time..

Another indicator that baby's latch isn't excellent is that baby keeps unlatching and trying to re-latch throughout the nursing session. That was one of my big indicators! Excellent advice as always Bridget thank you

Hi Bridget, you really put out so much good information, shows how much you love doing this. THANKS FOR YOUR LIGHT ON THIS SUBJECT. My baby feeds well but some latches are weak and she starts clicking. I thought it might be tung tie. But she does this only sometimes. I watched this channel throughout my pregnancy and manifested the perfect unmedicated natural birth in a Vietnamese hospital, with a doctor that spoke basic English. I was fully empowered and birthed within 2 hours after arriving at the hospital. Thanks for your work, they don't have Doulas in Vietnam. Try breastfeeding in a lying Position, you just have to Position the baby in the right height putting a towel or Something behind the babies back for Support and you can relax while breastfeeding. You can also try to find a lactation counselor to come to your house and help you( it is really worth the money!) I hope you find your way. It is sooooo much easier when you get the grip of it then feeding a bottle. I also had big problems breastfeeding my first child , the second child was a natural talent. Its not always you, sometimes the baby is lazy and needs you to put in extra effort to learn how to feed efficiently.

Great tips!! Back here with baby #5 to refresh my memory. With my first baby, I had many of these problems. It was SO painful. The thing that made the most difference for me was the “hamburger” tip and remembering to put as much of the areola in the baby’s mouth as I can. Also another thing that helped was if my breasts were too engorged to get a good latch was to express some milk first through pumping or by hand. That helped a lot with making a softer breast for baby.

I spoke to Several lactation consultants in the hospital when I had my daughter and they all literally told me that it was supposed to hurt. I had cracked and bleeding nipples, supply issues, and a Very cranky baby for the first Month. I ended up essentially giving up and supplementing with formula because I felt like I legitimately could not do it. I had gone crazy guzzling water, taking supplements, eating specific foods every day to up my supply etc the works. None of the people I spoke to explained things like this, one lady seriously shrugged off my concerns and went on to blather on about how she breastfed her 7 kids. That hospital experience was The absolute worst. I hope that I can find more good educational videos like this and just learn for myself to prep for our next child.

@annthierauf3738

So sorry you had that experience. I had sore cracked and eventually bleeding nipples with my first. It was because the latch was not deep enough. In order for the baby to get a good milk supply, the baby needs to have as much of the nipple and areola (brown area around the nipple ) in the mouth so the milk ducts around the nipple are squeezed.

I love all your videos Bridget! You help us pregnancy, labor & delivery, and postpartum ❤️ I wanted to touch on how you mentioned noisiness and clicking during a latch - amongst other things, this is a sign that baby has a tongue and/or lip tie that should be evaluated by a pediatric dentist for revision. My 3 week old had both a tongue and a lip tie revision, so we are working with an IBCLC to relearn a proper latch now that he has more lip and tongue mobility 😊❤️

I believe my baby might have that. She is 1 month now. I have seen a lactation consultant and latching still hasn’t improved. I mentioned lip or tongue tie and she doesn’t believe that is a problem. But I feel otherwise. Every feeding consists of nonstop loud clicking sounds. When I do manage to get a better latch around the areola my baby gags every time. She’s always hungry even after she eats too. Though she is gaining weight nicely.. Not to mention, she cannot latch properly on a bottle either, the same nonstop clicking sound problem. I’m very confused

your explanation of clicking brought back a memory of my first baby five years ago. I had no idea clicking was a sign of suction break and could have been the cause of my little one not gaining weight. Now I know what to look for with my second due very very soon.

I wanna thank you so so much for making your content. You really helped me to have a positive birth experience. I delivered my baby via normal delivery last January 5 and I think all of the videos I watched on your channel helped me accomplish it. You gave me confidence that I am made to give birth, that my body is made and capable of that extremely painful experience. I did what you always say, that I should not fight the pain, but rather experience every bits of it, because every contraction leads me on meeting my baby, so i just breathe it out and I am actually feeling the baby come down. I just experienced 2 hours labor then my baby came out easily. 🥰 Thank you so much..

Looking forward to trying these techniques and hopefully have a successful nursing session!

I need to say Thank you so much for this video!! Latching was a challenge from the beginning, my baby really struggled to latch at all and on the rarity she did latch, she didn't know how to stay on. I had endless midwifes offering contradicting advice and it became so overwhelming! Although I said I would quit trying many many times, I did continue to persist with nipple sheilds. At 8 weeks I found this video, and from then on my baby could latch! It was an incredible feeling. 6 months down the line now and still going well. My supply has never been able to catch up from the 8 week delay, so I combine feed, but I am so grateful I have been able to give her breast milk for part of her diet and comfort her that way!

I used this a lot when reteaching my baby how to have a good latch after she got her lip tie and tongue tie lasered and fixed. Even after ties are fixed they have to be retaught to have a good latch. It's good to keep in mind that if you just can't get a good latch no matter what you should see a lactation consultant and have your baby checked for lip ties and tongue ties.

I was having difficulties latching my baby on my right breast and was having severe shoulder pain as well. Since im a right handed person, i just wasn’t getting a good position on the right. I was letting my baby feed with the wrong latch thinking that some latch is better than no latch. After watching your video, i decided not to give up and keep trying till i get it right. Now my baby is sleeping like a baby with a full feed and i have no pain at all. Thank you so much for the motivation!

Thank you so much so thankful that I came across your video. My son is 6 weeks old and I have been holding him wrongly this whole time and just yesterday he has been getting upset seeing he hasn’t been able to latch on. I realised I was holding him as you said ‘imagine drinking a Starbucks with your head tilted to the side’ 🙁 (I feel so bad) I was already thinking of putting him on formula cause he wasn’t producing enough wet nappies and I was scared of him getting dehydrated due to not getting enough milk cause of his latching. Thank the Lord for you now my son will carry on with his breastfeeding journey 🤗 so thankful right now! - keep up the great work you are making a difference 🤗

Bridget, I just had to come back here and say THANK YOU so much!!! This video is the only thing that has worked for me and my daughter. I just had my third baby four days ago, and I couldn’t get her to latch properly. However, since watching your video, we’ve been successfully breastfeeding since yesterday with only mild pain due to my now healing nips. I’ve wanted to breastfeed and was unsuccessful the first two times. No lactation specialist or nurse has ever been able to help me and you did with this video! I’m so happy I could literally cry. So, thank you again and please keep doing what you’re doing. You give mamas like me on the brink of giving up so much hope!🥰💕

It's awesome that you're already educating yourself mama! Do you know why you mom wasn't able to breastfeed? Knowing might help you know how to best prepare yourself for your own journey! This is my second time watching this video. With my last kid, she wasn’t latching and I had to pump for two months until her mouth grew wide enough to latch around my entire aeriola so that it wouldn’t hurt. This video helped me get her to latch. Now, 18 months later, I have a newborn and I recalled watching this video and it helping me with the latch. She is one month and I’m still pumping waiting for her to latch. After seeing this for the second time, I have regained confidence in breastfeeding and am looking forward to her latching! You’re right, it’s very much worth the trial and error!!

Great video! What are your feelings/thoughts about oral ties and latch? Baby boy 2 was born at 34 weeks and had a deep anterior and posterior tongue tie that we had revised, which has since partially reattached during the healing process and a very tight upper lip frenulum and 4 cheek ties two upper and two lower... we have not had any other work done on these ties even though it’s been heavily advised for our breastfeeding journey by and IBCLC and our CST chiropractor. Our boy is 9 weeks and has just finally started latching it’s been a long journey to start, but now I’m struggling with clogged ducts because it’s like I’m starting over. I don’t think at this point it’s necessary to had the ties revised because now he’s nursing, but I was just curious about what your opinions and or thoughts were on it

For those mom with flat nipples. I learned in the hospital that if your breast is too full, it will be super hard for the baby to latch. So you should massage the aurela and get some of the milk out. If your aurela is soft is much easier for the baby to latch. As it do it so, the nipple will be formed even more when the baby sucks.

Thank you for being so helpful Bridget!! I love your videos, so informative for a first time mama 🙏🏽🙏🏽 I do have a question for you though regarding my baby bad latch, although it seems I’m doing everything right - as his bottom lip is flanged out; we are positioned closely tummy to tummy and I get him on with a wide mouth - 1. The 1st 30-60 seconds hurts, 2. Milk squirts out or leaves his mouth in the first 30 seconds, 3. When he’s done my nipple is going white and looks like lipstick.. My right nipple more so but they both hurt and I’m worried he will soon rip them off 😢 any additional suggestions is much appreciated 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

I'm glad you gave real and decent advice! You see I think certain advice can sometimes be deceptive. I gave up breast feeding my first two babies because I was in agony, told if baby is latching properly I shouldn't be in pain, but told my babies were latching well... Come third baby, I had the same issues with pain, told baby was latching well, yet it was only on day 5 that my midwife changed my life. She told me to latch baby on, I did reluctantly and wincing with the pain, she told me to count to 10 and then asked if the pain had now gone. It had... She told me I was fine, the pain would stop within a week or so, it was normal to feel pain in the first 10 seconds as my nipples are still adjusting! I breastfed for 6 months. If only someone had told me the same with my first babies and hadn't made me feel stupid with the contradictions in 'advice'! Pain is NORMAL! Please don't believe otherwise or you'll give up thinking you're doing it all wrong! The pain shouldn't last forever and it shouldn't necessarily last the entire feed although the pain may be more severe throughout the first couple of days for the first couple of minutes, but it is normal! My pain was completely gone by week 2. Sometimes I had discolouration in the beginning and the lipstick shape at times but it wasn't with every feed.
