I am not one who tends to be really big on fully instrumental albums, but this is actually completely fucking awesome! Total ear candy from beginning to end. This is my favorite instrumental metal album now! Even Metallica's instrumental tracks, while most certainly good, aren't my favorites. For whatever reason I tend to get a bit bored with instrumental tracks. I dunno, maybe there just isn't enough going on to hook me or maybe it's that certain sections go on for too long. I dunno. What I do know, is that did not happen here. I just listened to the whole album and was not bored at any point. I think much of this is a testament to how well designed these songs are. They strike that balance of being fast and aggressive, while still containing plenty of atmospheric moments and surprises to keep things from getting stale. There are many catchy sounds and solos that seem to change and alter multiple times in a given song. This meant that I never got complacent in my listening and was never quite sure what new little sound would pique my ears. I love how those spacey effects creep in during each song and give some very definite atmosphere. There is a scifi tinge here and it does a surprisingly great job of translating into the music. I wish this were a more common thing to find. This album does a spectacular job of mixing the technical playing with enough atmospheric effects to create something truly memorable. I wish more instrumental music could hit this balance. Without vocals, an album needs to manage to be engaging through the entirety of it's runtime. Here, I think the music takes full advantage of the space it inhabits. Not a moment feels wasted or drags on too long, and it contains plenty of color and texture in it's given songs. That effect on Prisms is just...nothing short of spectacular! have no doubt I will be listening to much more of this as the week continues.
