Breath of the Wild - The Story so Far (Zelda) 

Some people are claiming the old man is the king of Hyrule. I believe its a previous generation Link. But AH! AAAAAH! Im loving the story so far. Very similar to my favorite Zelda game of all time: The Legend of Zelda (1986)

NOTE: This video contains no spoilers for anything after the game's Demo. It only details plot elements that are described during the game's tutorial, so no spoilers for the overall plot of the game.

Putting everything together, it looks like Link fought Ganon but lost. Seeing as he awoke in the Shrine of Resurrection it's very likely he died, though it could merely be symbolical. It would also explain why the Master Sword is in its current state. A sword will rust over time but it doesn't get chipped all over. Every weapon in this game (the ones we've seen so far anyway) eventually breaks; perhaps this is how the game is trying to tell us that even the Master Sword can break. It definitely lost its power. But maybe there's a way to restore the Master Sword, and that's the reason why Link has been 'asleep' for 100 years. Perhaps the Master Sword has been put back in the pedestal in hopes that it might restore its power. Also, it seems the old man knows Link, or at least he knew he would awaken one day. He knows a lot about what has happened 100 years ago and even asks Link if he recognizes the mysterious voice, which also seems to hint at Link having amnesia or just having trouble recollecting what happened before his slumber.

After two years going off of a piece of artwork, teaser trailer, and five minutes of gameplay, you've got a LOT of work to do.

I love how much detail there is. Like how when link opens chests from different sides, theres different animations.

I have this strong feeling that the great plateau is the ruined castle town market from Ocarina of Time. First of all, the exact (and i mean EXACT) temple of time from Ocarina of Time but thats not all. If you look in front of the Temple you'll see a bunch or smaller ruined structures as if there was a town there at some point. Beyond the walls (north I think) of the plateau where you mentioned you'll fall to your death, there is a cobblestone path leading into a sprawling field that greatly resembles Ocarina's Hyrule Field (with added puddles and trees due to the passing years). I'm thinking this falls in the timeline sometime after windwaker when the flood is gone and the land returns to normal. I think this because we never really see any classic Hyrule landmarks in windwaker but we do see islands, and if the flood disappears, they'd just translate to tall mountains. The new diversity of elevations in the new Ocarina of Time Hyrule could be a side effect of erosion and so on due to the flood (also the ruined classic Ocarina landmarks).

Great work realising the first clothes you find are Link's from before he slept. That makes so much sense and I can't believe I didn't think of that until now!

Plot kind of reminds me of Avatar: The Last Airbender. Shit starts going down, hero goes into a stasis, comes back 100 years later, and has to fix what has been done to the world. I love the art style and overall direction of Breath of the Wild so far. Can't wait to play it!

Never thought I'd hear the word, "post-apocalyptic" describing a Zelda game. But then again, this game seems to have so much newness and novelty to it. So exciting!

wow i thought i had watched all the zelda footage but i hadnt seen the bit with the tower and the voice saying he'd been asleep for a 100 years and the old man explaining what had happened. What i'm hoping now is that throughrough the game we'll get flashbacks but more than that, instead of just cutscenes, i'm hoping we'll be able to actually play through those flashbacks. The resurrection chamber makes me think this could be something to do with the timeline where Link was defeated by Ganon, but I suppose it could fit inside few other spots in the timeline as well.

A few details I noticed from gameplay footage: 1. The down button on the D-pad is not used. 2. On the pause/item screen, the section where you equip clothes is titled "armor", not "clothing". 3. The old man expects link to hear a voice on top of the resurrection tower, and says its a shame link does'nt recognize the voice. He also knows link will find spirit orbs if he completes shiekah shrines. 4. The voice tells Link to try to remember Calamity Ganon.

My pet theory is that it's a very expansive reimagining of Zelda 2. The reason they won't show the towns is because of their names (Ruto, Mido, Nabooru, etc). Link waking up from a long sleep at the start is a call back to the fact that Zelda is trapped in slumber. The vast expansiveness of the world is probably what led them to tie it to Zelda 2, as it is the largest world in Zelda history. The reason we don't see dungeons are also because of the huge number of call-backs contained within. I could be super wrong, but I hope not. :D

I'm hoping it's specified that the technology is magic-based tech/science. It sounds pretty, but I'm a sucker for world building, and I feel like the magic-based element is something that needs to be kept. Great video Zeltik, please keep it up! You're by far my favourite source of Zelda videos/news. :)

Nintendo did the right choice in removing NPC's, towns, etc. to avoid spoilers. If there is one thing I always try to avoid is ruining the story of the games. I can't wait to uncover bit by bit of the plot as I go. This game is going to keep me pump with adernerline (did I spelled that right?) and suspense the whole way through. I'm going to be obsessing with uncovering every nook and cranny I can discover in this game when it comes out. I haven't been this excited for a game since Ratchet and Clank: A Crack in Time back in 2009. My body is ready.

I can feel the mistery as well. and for a mystery game i really hope they bring a massive story-telling....story with an interesting reveal at the end than just "Surprise! the old guy is Zelda/King Hyrule"

The Old Man is the King of Hyrule. He looks exactly the same as Wind Waker king. If you didn't notice, the engine they used for this game is a highly modified Wind Waker engine. Yeah..

Something tells me that the old man might be the final true villain.

This actually sounds like one of the best Zelda stories so far, it seems to be one of the more interesting and mysterious ones like majoras mask was.

Am I the only one who thinks that this Link is the hero of time? He may have been brought back. First off, when he gets the Sheikah slate, it says "you've never seen this device before, yet somehow it feels familiar.." That could relate to the sheikah stone Link has seen before. Another thing, though this is minor, you can have a wolf Link amiibo character in the game, and since that's TP Link, and Link's descendant, that could be another thing. Another minor detail- The voice says that Link is the light that must shine down on Hyrule once again. What does she mean by again? She wants him to help Hyrule again? Anyways, that's just an idea.

I am liking what we know...enough to speculate on till release. I am glad however that much of the stuff was left out of the area, cause as much as I am really wanting to know what's going on, I also want the game to be spoiler free when it comes time to getting my hands on it!

Gotta say, the story so far feels a little like Darksouls. You discover the story.

My theory is that this takes place after windwaker, where after link drained the world, the goddess sent him into slumber until he was supposed to be resummoned to fight ganon if need be. However he slept too long, and missed the entire rise and fall of the sheikah tribe, and now has to fix hyrule. This makes sense because- we saw Korok and some of the other windwaker guys, Links blue garb is very similar to links from windwaker, the old man looks like the king of hyrule, we see the temple of time surrounded by mountains like we did when going underwater in windwaker to the temple of time, the art style is so similar, and the world is so vast and large, with mountains everywhere. In windwaker there were islands scattered everywhere, and if I've learned anything from middle school science, mountains and islands are the same thing, just underwater. Dunno though, it could also take place after skyward sword with all the connections of blue energy with the lanayru robots. Maybe the sheikah

Am I the only one who thinks the old man is an old/phantom-ish Ganondorf with no power (which is why he wants the spirit obs)? The Ganon in the castle is a manifestation of all of his power and to get it back he "helps" link to unseal/get to the castle stopping only to get more spirit orbs to accomplish this task. It's brilliant! You think the old man is helping you undo a great evil when really you're helping revive it! God I'm going to LOVE this game!

I wouldn't be surprised if the voice is of Fi. The spirit in the now old and damaged Master Sword, trying one last time to reach you and get you to bring peace to Hyrule. Perhaps in those 100 years, Fi managed to regain enough energy to reach you.

I'm getting a Twilight realm vibe from the shrines. Black surfaces with colourful flowing patterns. Perhaps the Sheikah did become the Twili, and Link did manage to get back to Midna but was stuck there. The Twilight and Light realms merged and now Link has been awoken by Midna. Link from TP was known as the hero of light, and the voice calls you the light.

What if the Sheikah knew the fate of the land and decided to incubate the Hero until it was ready from him to be resurrected again? Sheikah are wise so it wouldn't be a surprise they has the technology to do so. Maybe a great battle insured before he was put into stasis? In order to protect him and keep him intact after what happened. Temple of Time is in ruins and those guardian things are everywhere. Maybe they invaded?

my theory places it on Downfall timeline. I think Downfall and Adult are parallel to one another. they each have the Shattered Triforce search and it's just a theory so stay with me. The Calamity ganon is the event that triggers the great flood. only the hero doesn't appear to stop it because Zelda removed Link from the Timeline messing up the hero cycle. so they had no choice but to flood hyrule. but on the Downfall timeline where similar events are taken place the hero does show and for one reason or another he's unable to stop ganon so they contain it in hyrule castle for 100 years. with Hyrule Turning to Ruin maybe it's possible the forest became overrun with Monsters and the Kokiri once again became the Koroks to increase their chances of survival. At 3:37 you can have a closer look at that floating island that was mentioned in one of the other videos.

Its possible, since on top of the temple of time, there is a solider a bow, this suggest that a soilder would sit atop that tower and fend of small threats. Near the temple, there a ruins of three of those robot things that we saw in the trailer that showed the slow time bow shooting thing. This makes it seem like Ganon launched an assault on this place. On another video I saw a comment. It said that this looked like wind waker Hyrule before if was flooded. It seems like this could be in the timeline before windwaker, and if the player succedes in there quest to stop calamity Ganon, something happens and new game. But if Ganon gets out before link succedes, the we get windwaker. Clamity Gannon gets flooded and stuff. Also it wouldn't be hard to find high points in this world. In addition, in one early gameplay demo where miyamoto says this game will be available 2015 I think, we see the world map. Only one place has a snowy mountain, which is available for exploration in the e3 demo. This is probably where you are in that demo.

That old man is either a form of Ganon, or the King. Rauru? Kapora Gabora? Ganon/Ganondorf is an exceptionally tall character, and although he IS and old man, he may be a little too short... I can't wait to hear more about the storyline!

Perhaps this is after Oot and Majora's Mask? Theory: Link died/fell asleep in the lost woods looking for Navi, so was not present for the calamity, then was eventually resurrected by the Sheika magic. We know that Majora's Mask is an allegory for death of course, but since he was only mostly dead, the moon crashing in Majora's Mask may have been him subconsciously feeling the calamity happen, causing him to have desperate recurring dreams/ retry dreams, hence time travel. (I've personally experienced dreams like that, where it doesn't work, so I try again and again.) Also, in dreams, most of the people you see are those you have met in life, similar to the game. So Yes, MM is a game about death and mourning, but, as Miracle Max likes to say: "There's a big difference between mostly dead and all dead Most adults who wander into the forest get lost and turn into trees, but maybe the gods preserved him for this purpose. Thoughts?

Love the idea that the Sheikah race could play a big part and hopefully we'll meet a bunch of them. Maybe they can rally together with Link to defeat that pig shape. Lol.

Great video, since there was so much that was shown at e3 it was hard to get details on the story and where things like calamity Ganon came from. Only thing I am trying to find out is how link gets his blue tunic/ outfit??

Hi . PLEASE READ It's IMPORTANT QUESTION ... I'm suprised by a fact that when I was watching Treehouse videos I noticed an interesting thing about map , in The video which Master Aonuma and Bill playing together( Not the first video ) after showing sun rise Bill opened map and zoom out there is giant large black space area at the left and right and even below side of the map .I'm sure Bill intentionally showing this to us and If you look at it closely you an see that lines on the map at the edge of the dark-blue area being cut so it seems lines can extended to become complete area or route ! Please take a look at the mentioned video (I mean second one that features Mr Aonuma and bill then tell me what do you think of it . Why they put lot of dark space at the each side of the map ? It's almost 2.5 inches of black space each side of map , so it got me to this point that they will be unlocked later . Now interesting thing is in this case map will be much much larger ! let me know what do you think .

Hi! I've already posted this on Zelda Universe, I'd like to hear your thinking of it =) There are so many points that make me believe the game takes place before OoT: The crests that are displayed around look like the Bird crest from SS, also the Spirit Orbs have the Bird crest imprinted, the Royal Family Crest that comes with the Triforce above the Bird is NOWHERE to be seen. That implies to me that the Royal Family isn't around or hasn't been around yet. The strong presence of Goddess Hylia is very odd too, it may be that it's just because the character itself is kind of newly created and that's why it doesn't appear or isn't mentioned anywhere before SS, but what I believe about it is that since Hylia is everywhere in BotW it must be closer in history to SS, before the cult of the Goddess was forgotten (perhaps). The Sheikah technology displayed in the game, even though it's highly advanced is hinted to be really ancient as well, just like THE ANCIENT ROBOTS from SS!!! When my brother saw the guardians in BotW the first thing he noticed was that the guardians' heads kind of resembled those little fellas. Those robots are said to have been created by an ancient civilization, what if that civilization was the Sheikah? On this note, one thing that truly troubled me about SS was that if the Sheikah were faithful servers of the Goddess -just as Impa shows to be-, they are not mentioned in the war against Demise while those robots are even portrayed standing at the side of the Goddess, what if the great Sheikah civilization was decimated by Demise and only their robot thingys remained when the Goddess rallied against the Demon King? That would also explain why the few remaining Sheikah are so secretive now just like the Impa that aids Zelda in SS, One more thing that supports this is that all those Shrines around BotW are not that "secret" and well spread over the world, that's not really "Sheikah-ish" TBH, it just doesn't go well suited with all the Sheikah trend post-OoT. I know this theory is kind of flawed, but so are the ones that place BotW on the other timelines, remember that a great amount of years could span between the Era of Sky and the Era of Chaos, what if a first Hyrule Kingdom was settled by the hylians of Skyloft and then razed by Calamity Ganon? Under those terms it could even be possible that this Link could even be the original Hero Chosen by the Goddess being resurrected to fight against evil once again. Anyway, the only truth is that everything is really messed-up and Nintendo did a good job hiding the time-placement of this story. Sorry if I'm not that clear, it's just that English is not my native language =)

Link travels to the castle, gets stomped by Ganon's minions (the guardians that the spires surrounding the castle represent), gets informed of a powerful relic sword, goes on quest to retrieve it. Finds it's all but ruined and then sets out to restore the sword. Along the way he gets other relics and weapons. Basically this is Link's 2nd coming/redemption story. The question for me is... Which Link? Is this one we've seen before or a completely new Link that is one of the only, if not the few Links that actually gets a second chance.

honestly i really dont care which Position in the timeline this game will take. I just want to play this innovative and beautiful game

You missed something, during one of the play throughs of the game one person said that you will get something much more valuable once they completed the shrines, not the paraglider, or so I remember

I have seen a few other videos guessing that this is a direct sequel to Wind Waker, including one that predicted a split in the timeline, one where the Hero of Winds failed, and Ganondorf claimed the Triforce and was able to wish for the return of Hyrule. This theory can be found on Commonwealth realm's channel. But I have an expansion on this theory. After watching this video, I realized that this theory may now have another detail. This Link could be that Link that failed! What if, instead of being a stasis pod, the pool of water Link wakes up in truly is a shrine of resurrection, like the name suggests? What if this is the hero of winds reincarnate? The smaller clothes are there because Link DID grow up, as he was just a kid in Wind Waker. The old man would then be the King of Hyrule, unable to die because he was doomed to survive until Hyrule was properly reclaimed. However, he is forced to reflect the state of the kingdom, so he too is in shambles. If this were true, one could even argue about a correlation between the sail and the paraglider, or the fact that the Hero of Winds went from using winds to sail to using the winds to fly. Additionally, the loss of memory would make complete sense. (According to this impromptu theory) Link died in Wind Waker, so is it truly far-fetched to say that dying caused amnesia? The voice, urging Link to remember, would then be one of two things; firstly, it could be Hylia, urging Link into action, as she is basically the patron goddess of Hyrule. She wants to see it rise up again. Secondly, it could be Zelda herself, calling, asking for help, just as she did at the start of A Link to the Past. Personally, I believe the second option is the more likely of the two, considering how much inspiration the developers sought to draw from the classic Zelda games (hence the appearance of the old man). As for Calamity Ganon, I believe he was created when he got his wish. I think the gods, obligated to fulfill Ganondorf's wish, struck him down in some way. Maybe it was through the winds that he hated so. Maybe it was through the sealing of the castle, forcing him to bide his time until he starved. Maybe it was just an act of the gods that struck him down directly. Whatever it was, it didn't truly kill him. As seen as a repeating plot element, Ganondorf CANNOT be killed. Even the Master Sword can only seal him temporarily. So, what if, the gods granted him Hyrule, but restrained his body to the castle? They would be granting his wish, but attempting to preserve the kingdom at the same time. Though they tried to kill him, they did not have access to the Master Sword, so they could only restrain him temporarily. Thus, they waited until they could resurrect the Hero of Winds to try again, as there were few Hylians to get a new Hero from. This theory was written on the fly, so there are sure to be holes in it. PLEASE point these out if you find them, and please upvote this comment. I'd love for Zeltik to see this so he could analyze it further, as he does a great job with it and puts it in an extremely organized form. If you are reading this, keep it up Zeltik!

The sheik were some "ninja" Clan that from Ocarina of Time, Zelda had been protected by while hiding. She showed herself in the sheik form to Link several times while hiding her identity but nothing was said much about them besides that. You see their symbol of an eye on several stones where in Ocarina of time if you hit them they tell you the time of day or talk to them when wearing the mask of truth. I am glad we will finally see more about them although I'm curious on why these creatures are called guardians and what is the deal with resurrection or if the whole "Zelda timeline map" has this version coming from the Defeat, or victory timeline.

i think this game is set after Ocarina of time events in fallen Hero Timeline, after Link lost the battle against Ganon, he was sent to the shrine of resurrection and went into a state of cryogenics while Sages sealed Ganon in Temple of Time. Hundread Years has past and with the seal weakening, Ganon is now back and the hero of time will have a chance for revenge.

I'm fairly certain that this is in the same timeline as twilight princess, but after those events. in the trailer we saw link riding a horse on what was either eldin bridge or the bridge above lake hylia

The old man kind of reminds me of a shaggy version of the King of Hyrule, or even Rauru--which would make total sense due to the fact that Rauru first appeared to Link as Kaepora Gaebora (owl) and the old man can fly with the paraglider.

I have a theory. The old man is Gannon, he requests the "treasure" from the shrines to regain his power, he will probably ask for more and more in return for different things. I doubt that's true, but who knows, it might be interesting.

I have a question: when you're showing the gameplay of Link activating the Resurrection Tower, what Nintendo E3 video is that from? Or is it GameXplain or IGN? Thanks.
