I just wanted to say that despite the fact these might not get a ton of views (yet), they are extremely useful and appreciated (as you can see with your extremely high level of engagement in terms of likes and comments relative to number of views). I think if you regularly posted (which it looks like you're starting to a bit more), you would definitely start getting more views and it'd be a great marketing funnel for your courses too of course. I love hearing everything you have to say, so keep it up!

Thank you, William. This is very helpful to me. Running sentences are a challenge for me and I can see now how important it is to practice my breathing- plus it's less editing later on. By the way, I always enjoy your humorous illustrations and photos. :-)

Thank you so much. I am recording a bunch of voiceovers as I want to set my channel up and editing out all the breaths is inefficient. Breathing through the nose no matter how I control it, the mic picks it up every time. Can’t wait to try this out tomorrow.

Wait, so mouth-breathing is a good thing in some specific circumstances? I always hear "mouth breather" used as a pejorative.
@roberttheronin9803
@roberttheronin9803 2 года назад
All in moderation. Mouth breathing techniques allow for better breath control BUT prolonged mouth breathing can lead to skull deformities and skin sagging below the chin etc so on.

Hey there. Always excellent advice. Thank you! Question, off topic: I'm doing a prof. home studio audio book (my first) and it sounds great while listening with recording ear phones, and when I export it and listen on my phones speakers, even great on my cars nice Harman speakers, BUT when I listen with ear buds on my phone I hear a metal sounding ping every so often. I can't even see any spikes or hear it, these little pings, in my DAW-Audacity, set at "waveform db." So I checked other RU-vid videos by using my ear phones, at highest sound level, to listen if it happens to others too (wondering if maybe it's just my ear buds). I found many videos where people are using a prof mic and many have those same little pings, but NOT all of them. I did the same checking, with my ear buds in, on your breathing video here and you have NO little pings. However, I do hear it in other videos you have made where you are closer to the mic (i.e. Your video on what mic to buy).Now this is not a ping coming from my voice, etc, it seems to be the microphone (btw I use an AKG P220, set to 0db and neutral). Also, I went through a dozen professional audio book samples with my ear buds in and they sound perfect-NO little/subtle metal pings... So I know its not just my ear buds picking this sound up. It's something else. I have spent so much laborious work on the audio book that I need to finish, but it's not up to par for those who may want to listen with ear buds. I have to start all over, but I can't seem to triangulate the issue... Since you are a seasoned professional (I love your voice BTW), I thought I'd ask you if you know what I'm talking about and how to fix it. Any information will be graciously received. Thank you in advance!!

Have a listen to The Good Life as sung by Tony Bennett, then sing along with him. You'll learn how and when to breathe-I guarantee it.

I’ve lately recorded a private(cause my voice actually sounds disgusting) audiobook to help review I book I like. Halfway through I actually didn’t realize much about the breathing thing and started out reading out loud as much as I can before I have to ‘breath’ again and editing the track here and there. Eventually I thought about how other people(with normal voices) get away with live voice overs for longer periods of time. And I just had to observe closely that they do in fact do that skillfully taking small breaths between each sentence(or sometimes they can say two sentences or so before quick breaths. Usually it’s places like where the period or commas from sentences. Man, a combination of my bad voice and autism riddled Asperger’s Syndrome has taken everything away from me ever speaking normal... But still it’s worth it cause I’m even a microphone enthusiast who stills wants to get hands on with many mics I always wanted to try even if I’m physically not able to them effectively use as much in public during my lifetime, cause the bad voice always negates their high sound quality advantage.

ACSpectator First of all, you are probably being too harsh about your voice. Most people, including many successful voice talent do not like the sound of their own voice. If you would my evaluation you can go to www.onlinevoiceoverclasses.com/free-sample-voice-over-lesson-and-evaluation and read the sample commercial and send it to me an I'll give you my unbiased evaluation. You will never hear breaths in commercials. The talent breathes naturally but the breaths are edited our because a commercial is usually 30 or 60 seconds long so editing is quick and easy. On the other hand the breaths are left in audiobooks (and of course any live TV or radio) because it sounds unnatural if the breaths are removed. The same is true with singing. It is best to just breath quietly at the natural pauses indicated by commas and periods. I work with someone with Asperger's and his performances sound fine. Just speak naturally and you'll be OK.

Good point thx for the reply. I can hate on my voice a bit too much at times. Several people do claim their voices aren’t good, but they still can work with them. It usually takes finding a sweet spot for just about everyone to manage. I’ll look at the link and think about it. Honestly, though I’ve always had a suspicion that my voice is in fact very very different from even those who claims their voices are ugly(yet they have more respectively workable tones than mine). And out of all the males voices around my age and older, mine is more factually odd like it doesn’t have that grown ‘man’(even higher pitched males have that lack knowing the actual name of it stiff top heavy sometimes plasticky(sorta?) tone). It’s like some strange in between a child and grown man’s voice with some slurry nasally tone. I cannot guarantee going very far in the public voiceover world due to my limitations. Realistically I can goes as far sending the recording for evaluation to test how good or bad the voice really is. Also, I’ve been returning many mics I was curious to try in person. Many of which are much more higher end compared to the mics I own. The mics(only ones I’ve kept so far) I have at the moment are cheap. So it’ll be a while before I would end up working with a better quality mic, unless Samson Go Mics or ATR2100s are welcomed, but of course neither of them have certain features like gain knobs.

There is one unfortunate update I must mention, I recently discovered myself to have an ear ringing that hasn’t been going away, indicating tinnitus. And I’ve been wary of using headphones lately which are used in mic monitoring. I think with this slight tragedy I may be far from ever getting into the audio and voiceover business now...
