Bom Dia! As Americans we are exploring Portugal's Douro Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a winemaking history dating back to Roman times. The Douro River, the third-longest on the Iberian Peninsula, meanders through this region for 897 kilometers (557 miles). Here, microclimates create ideal conditions for growing grapes, olives, and almonds, essential components of the renowned port wine. Arriving in early fall, we marveled at the post-harvest vineyards just beginning to display their autumnal colors. Our visit left us considering the idea of making this charming region our new home. We visited Regua in the spring and took a boat tour to Pinhao. Both towns were oozing with Portuguese charm. Of the two, Pinhao was smaller, but we liked it even more than Regua. But Regua has that amazing river walk. How to decide??? I guess it's like your dinnertime wine dilemma - you just can't go wrong no matter what. Enjoy!

The Douro River Valley is one region I would want to consider. I follow a real estate agent who sells properties in the valley. Incredibly beautiful properties with stunning views. Much of it is out of range for me. He presents in Portuguese and watching his videos has helped a great deal in developing an ear for spoken Portuguese. Alex

In all honesty it is very rare for temperatures in that region to reach 114 , normally it will sit at around or close to 100. That said in the winter, there is a drop to 40 or sometmes even 30 or 25. You have a much better all around weather in Madeira.

There are many beautiful locations in Portugal. Me and my wife live in Madrid and we've been visiting Portugal since we first met in 2007. We have just come back from a week's holiday in the Alentejo Alto region. All regions have their charms, although some are very touristic, such as in the Algarve. The inland regions are less touristic and, in our opinion, better places to experience the relaxed way of life that Portugal offers. Obviously, this asumes a person has the financial security or income to fund such a lifestyle. The only real disadvantage, in my opinion, is the language - and this would be the same for all other countries where we don't speak the local language. Most other things can be learnt quite quickly, or in a matter of a couple of years, but language aquisition will take a good decade of regular and consistent practice to become fluent and competent. Costs are relative, and anywhere in the world will have its pros and cons. Plus, these situations are always changing, due to the political policies and the economic situation of a country. You guys are doing a great service on your channel. I hope you continue to enjoy your life and experiences in Madeira and any trips you may make to mainland Portugal and Europe.

@@ItllBeFun I can recommend Italy, The Netherlands and Belgium as some of our favourite EU countries to visit. Here's a little bit of background from me. I'm originally from London, and I've been travelling to Spain all of my life since a small child because my mum was born in Spain. So I'm from a mixed heritage Spanish and London Irish background. My wife is from Suriname, so her mother tongue is Dutch. She studied Spanish as a career. We both met in Madrid in 2007, when it was my first time living and working in Spain. For her, it was her second time. We went back to Spain in January 2011, as my dear mum was getting on in years. My father had passed away many years before, when they had both retired to Spain in 1987. My father was quite ill at the time with angina and had to have a by-pass operation some years later. Unfortunately, he wouldn't survive the operation. My mother then moved back to the UK to be live near my sister, then I moved there too from London. A strange twist of fate brought my parents together from two countries, then my father passed away in Spain and my mother in England. Now, me and my sister live in Spain. So your saying of "we should have done this sooner" is particularly pertinent in my family. However, life unfolds un ways that are not always as we planned and destiny often has other things in store for us. The thing in common between you guys and me and my family is the simple fact of people following their dream, despite what difficulties may or may not need to be faced. The so-called comfortable life, for those who can afford it, is often full of needless STUFF and a lifestyle that can be unhealthy in the extreme. It takes a brave heart, and a loving one, to be able to up sticks and go for it. No matter how we plan it, there will always be unforeseen circumstances at some point - but that is also true if we stay put in our "comfort zone". At the end of the day, we all going go 6 feet under anyway, and as far as I know, the only STUFF that fits in the coffin is our physical body! Not the car, the house, the DVD collection, the impressive tool store in the "man shed" or the stunning footwear selection in the "wife's wardrobe" etc. As a good Jamaican friend of mine has always said to me: "We a long time dead you know!". So life is short, so it must be lived as best we can, with or without some things and hopefully, for as long as possible, with the people we most love. I feel that is the best example I can set for my children and grandchildren. It is also the option that gives me most happiness, even during difficult times.

I continue to look for the spot that will make us want to stay forever. However, I have in mind buying which I think might be too restrictive since the commitment will be forever. Since you found your place in Madeira you’re home already. You can travel the country but always go home to Madeira. Your son… well, he’s very young and who knows what life will bring and where he’d want to settle.

Very nice video. We are a group of 6 people from Sweden who going to visit Porto on April the 20th. We are renting a car and going to be in valley for one full day. Do we need to book a tour? Or is it ok if we drive with rented vehicle through the valley?
